Small to lesser medium sized off white head settles to a quarter inch or less of frothy covering above a clear light caramel copper colored beer.

Light citrus and pine hops aroma just seems to get better as the beer warms a bit.

Fresh pine seems to be coming through more than anything else when drinking this IPA, along but to a lesser degree there is some citrus as well as a fresh cut grass aspect to the taste.

Dry aftertaste that seems to almost pucker the lips and leaves a slight citrus taste behind with this medium bodied beer.

Pretty darn decent IPA, not overwhelming but it has some nice citrus and pine hops characteristics that I like.

Pours a light golden orange color. Clear. Small head with minimal retention.

Clear hop smell. Aroma of pine is there, along with grass and pollen, but floral and tropical fruit notes shine through most.

Bitterness is predominant, but annoyingly sweet tropical fruits sweep into the mouthfeel taking over the center of the tongue in an unbalanced way. The aftertaste is heavy sweet, then after a few minutes the expected hop bitterness comes back.

This a pretty standard ipa. Certainly not offensive, but nothing special.

A February 2014 "best by" dated bottle, poured into a tulip glass, consumed over 30 minutes.

The base is a golden orange amber with an even haze that allows a pretty dance of light to pass. A soapy/cakey white head bubbles up, but falls fairly quickly. It leaves patchy bubbles and wispy cap islands with adequate splotchy lacing. Little visible carbonation.

Fruits are forward in the bouquet--pineapple, apricot, and some white grapefruit. Some spruce is evident, but the evergreen is not strong; and certainly not woody or earthy, either, though there is a note of funk. The background is an almost buttery biscuit dusted with brown sugar and a whiff of vanilla.

Orange and grapefruit, with their pith jump up bitterly on entry. A buzz of bubbles sits on the tongue for a second, and once it falls, allows caramel and oily sweetness to replace it while the bitter grabs the sides of the tongue. Then, the overall taste experience shortens up. It's a little grassy towards the end to match scents that emerge more as it warms--never boozy. But the bitter end is chopped off.

High carbonation creates the dominant early texture in the mouth. But hop oils linger on the tongue, too, and fill out a fine medium body. The length of the feel extends beyond the flavor experience.

This is a solid brew. Look and smell are better than the taste, though…and it feels better than the flavor reward. But, it does its job simply. The bitter end begs for food--a nice greasy burger is my suggestion.

I'm gonna be honest with the beer world. All of the geeks who say Pliny is the greatest, or heady topper. Hop Notch is the best bang for your buck out of any beer. Go find 35 bucks in your couch cushin and buy a case. Stone or Bells couldn't carry this beers lunch. Unless you live in Vermont this is the king of ipa's. Don't let the generic label fool you. Your drinking Hop Notch your living high class. Peace my beer drinking brothers
