Hop Notch – IPA (7.2%) - Uinta Brewing Co. (Utah)
☆☆½

App: Pours a rich amber with a nice one and a half finger off cream white head that retains well and leaves high, tight lacing all around the glass. Slightly cloudy, but not against style.

Smell: American piney and resinous hops dominate nose with a slightly sweet, tropical fruit note to them. Hints of passion fruit and grapefruit. Slight hint of overripe banana and cantaloupe. Malt is very faint and slightly biscuit like. Slight solvent, but not overbearing.

Taste: Pretty much falls in line with the aromas in the nose, with some pretty severe alcoholic heat after the swallow. Malt balance is a little off, with not quite enough sweetness to counterbalance the massive hop bill in this one. Hops are good overall, beginning with some pretty strong herbal notes that are taken over by more piney flavors. Eventually overcome entirely by the alcohol heat.

Mouth: A little thin bodied. Carbonation is low, which doesn't compliment the style at all.

Home tasting, 12oz can into Snifter. 1/27/14.

12 oz brown bottle. Uinta bottles are brilliantly shaped and stand out amongst a wall of 3,000 beers. I love them! And their labels are eye catching, made with quality yet simple. The entire thing is just awesome! Hop Notch is a perfect example of what Uinta is all about. A yellow label with a dark green color going on. A classic pickup truck with 2 farmers harvesting hops. Just a damn traditional yet classy label. Poured this into a stemmed port glass. Or ipa glass in the eyes of some breweries.

A - nearly perfect clarity. Quite surprising its so clear with what this offers up in taste and smell. Anyway, a golden bright orange body color with a Snow White head sitting a top. A real stunner to look at. Bright and luscious looking head that's like a big white pillow with a refreshing and smart looking body. Random bubbles rise to the top keeping a sturdy ring of lace leaving lots of stick. I can't say I've ever seen stick like Hop Notch leaves. Some of its splotched in the masses while there are tiny dustings of stick all over. Very impressive!

S - a whiff of dank hops up front followed by traditional west coast pine and grapefruit whiffs. Fresh grass and some lighter fruits and citrus going on. Biscuit malt balances an overall dank funky bit of hop goodness aroma.

T - big west coast pine notes up front followed by a touch of grapefruit and citrus. The biscuit flavored malt balances the hops in a world class style. Fresh green grass gets more detail as this warms. Some sweeter caramel malt notes come out of nowhere before the funky fresh hops pick back up leaving a bit of hop spice and dank character to the finish. Delicious.

M - medium bodied and refreshing. Maybe a bit thinner than I'd prefer, but take nothing away from this dandy. It packs in loads of brilliant flavors. Saying its thin is wrong. It carries good texture and thickness while coating very nicely. It's just not as thick as some out there and I'm a thick kind of guy. But overall the feel is good, flavorful and refreshing. I could drink this all day

O - Hop Notch is a dandy of an American ipa. It's really a perfect example of an American ipa. In fact, I believe Uinta's hop notch is a perfect example of just how great American made craft beer is today. They not only brew in a way not many can pull off, but they are just producing some fine crafted brews these days. Hop Notch is a winner and some of the best stuff on the planet. Easy to find and available year round!? You bet ill be enjoying plenty of these.

A: Amber color with a white head.

S: Fresh orange, lemon, mango, papaya, pineapple, passion fruit and tropical fruit in the nose.

T: Starts of with a nice citrus character of orange and a little lemon, as well as a healthy dose of mango, followed by pine and tropical fruit. Finish is fruity, but malt forward.

M: Medium-full bodied and smooth for an IPA.

O: An excellent IPA, one of my favorites in the style and from this particular brewery.

12oz can with Enjoy by 3-14-14 stamped underneath the can. Pours a translucent orange color with over an inch of frothy white head. Tons of lacing. The aroma is piney and floral hops with some light citrus notes. The taste is floral hops with some pine as well. Cut grass, orange peel and almost a soapy floral taste. Bitter floral finish. Light alcohol presence. Lots of carbonation. Overall, its a decent beer but nothing special.

Enjoy by 3/14/14. Amber color with a showy off-white pale beige head. Cans!

Juicy fruit hop aroma and sweet hard candy-like malt. Sharp, buzzing grass.

Sharp, grassy citrus, bitter lemon with a slightly floral/oily potpourri finish. A bit heavy on the malt IMO but I'm pretty sensative about that.

While it doesn't have the je ne sais quoi of Sculpin or Lunch it's definately in that 1B IPA tier of Baxter Stowaway and the like. Great stuff.
