Saw this in NYC at fairway. Having tried and enjoyed the imperial black ipa I gave it a try. Wary of it's utah origins (for some reason I'm stuck believing that beer in utah is diluted), I was encouraged by the 7.3% abv.

I'm honestly not one for the look of a beer and began by drinking it out of the bottle. As a neuroscientist working in the field of taste, I know that flavour is a product of the fave basic tastes multiplied by the smells. Drinking from the bottle limits smells and allows for finer perception of the five tastes, with bitter, sweet and sometimes sour dominating (umami and salt tend to be minor players).

With such an high abv I suspected a lot of sugar went into it but the malts are subdued and truly balance the hops which I would consider to be mild given the eponymous prominence of the flower. I could drink a lot of these until I was too drunk to drink more; this I could say about many beers but it's the first one that counts the most and this is a beer I would gladly let take my sobriety.

Hop Notch IPA
Uinta Brewing Company
Style: American IPA
ABV: 7.30 %

LOOK: Clear light orange colored brew, slight off white head and plenty of lace work.

SMELL: Nose of orangey citrus, floral notes, pine needles, and bready malts.

TASTE/FEEL: Smooth easy drinking ale with a small hop bite, mild citrus notes full of orange and grapefruit. An herbal note is also attributed to the hops, with biscuity, pale malt flavor adding some sweetness. The finish of the beer is slightly bitter, with more citrus notes lingering.

OVERALL: A great session IPA for the warmer months. Very refreshing, well balanced, flavorful brew. Well made, and a six pack is well worth the purchase. Bottled on 7-24, nice and fresh indeed.

I struggled between 4 and 4.5 with this one.

Poured from a bottle into a pint glass without a hip or trendy craft brewers logo on it.

Appearance is a pleasant red tinged gold typical of a west coast style IPA.

Smells are lemongrass, earthiness, and a bit of pine.

Taste is very pleasant. This is a very well balanced IPA. The malt is sweet and compliments the hop bitters. A nice grape fruit note that goes to caramel and finishes piney. This beer does not drink like the moderately high 7.3 abv would indicate.

The mouthfeel is what gets me. It has a nice medium body approprite for the style, but the ending leaves a sticky impression.

Burnt orange color with hop haze. Overpour left little in the possibility for a billowing head. I'll settle for my foam ring.

Aromas are dominated by tropical fruits and some pine. Pineapple and grapefruit most noticeable. Light toast to the malt grains. Has a semi-slanted balance to it.

Canned pineapple, evergreen, grapefruit pith, melon, and light orange. Moderate levels of bitterness. Semi-dry with some oiliness. Intricate flavors scatter from fruit to fruit to flower. Has that snappy plant astringency to it. Hints of peach and lemon. Chalky flavors in the middle. A bit thin, but above-average in the way the carbonation works hard.

Great IPA. Thank you for landing in PA.

Bottled 5/4/12.

Appearance: Pours a clear burnt orange color with about 1/2" of white head and pretty high carbonation. Head retention is pretty good, and lacing is nice as well. Good looking IPA. Nice color on this.

Smell: Definitely some malt character in this one. Very caramelly. Nice citrus component with orange rind, and hints of pineapple. Some florals round out the hop character.

Taste: Again, lots of caramel malt sweetness up front in this beer, followed by florals. Citrus comes next, with some pretty nice mango and pineapple notes. Unfortunately a kick of alcohol on the finish retracts some for me.

Mouthfeel/Overall: Mouthfeel is light-medium nice carbonation, and again the alcohol bite makes me like it a little less. Overall, I probably enjoyed this a bit more than I was expecting. I really enjoyed the dank hop and mango/pineapple notes.

look: 3.5 | smell: 3.5 | taste: 4 | feel: 3.5 | overall: 4

Appearance - Dark golden orange. Cloudy, with some carbonation from the bottom visible. 1-inch head

Smell - Floral hops, citrus.

Taste - Bitter hops, floral stays in the nose. citrus, honey, bitter hops stay in aftertaste

Feel - Medium-heavy. dry (from alcohol), sticky.

Overall - Reminds me quite a bit of Bell's Two-hearted Ale. Hop Notch has about the same ABV and has maybe a little more bitter hop taste. Less balanced, but good. I'd prefer Two-hearted. Hop Notch is almost as good for almost the same price.
