Appearance wise, its a beautiful dark color, with very little head. This beer presents with a very subtle, almost too downplayed aroma. Notes of plum and cherry and slight smokiness. Taste and mouthfeel are the strong suit of this beer. Has the same underlying character of flavor of a stout or porter, but still the lightness and crispness of a lager. Same smokey, chocolatey plum, and a subtle touch of apple cider, to round it off. Not too sweet though. Well balanced with an unaggressive hop profile which cuts the sweetness without pretending to be something it is not. If you want a Black Lager, this is a very good choice.

On-tap at the Brass Tap, Greenfield, WI:

Pours black with a thin white head that leaves lacing.

The smell is of dark bread with restrained roast.

The taste is of dark malt with muted roast. Slightly mineral-like aftertaste.

It has a light to medium body.

It hits the style well enough. An easy drinker.

Super quick review. Uinta really killed it with this lager: full & rich without being filling, complex & deep without being overbearing. Top-notch.

Black lager done right. The flavor is full and enveloping. One of the best black lagers I've ever had.

L: pitch black with inch of tan foam, very enticing.
S: mild chocolate aroma, some caramel.
T: Modestly bitter, mild chocolate, everything hits the palate and passes a short time later.
F: thin, modestly bubbly
O: this beer is certainly smooth. Its appearance might scare away the weak of heart but don't judge it by its cover, this is true to its lager name. As a stout lover I always have a preference for bolder beers but this is well executed for the style.

Black body with a clinging off-white head. Gentle aroma of toasted bread, burnt grain, subtle notes of tar and red grape. Clean. Pretty tasty stuff here - clean and crisp palate, toasty and chocolatey malt character without any heaviness. It's brought down slightly by a faint ashy character. Slight dark malt sourness in the finish along with a hint of dark fruit. Not a bad little beer.

Great look with a huge fluffy head that clings to the glass and has great retention. Smokey and sweet malt with earthy hops and a light lingering bitterness with some charred wood and bittersweet chocolate lingering. Crisp feel and very smooth With a drying finish. Terrific flavor for such a light beer. Nicely done and cool to see it is organically made as there are not many options in the category.

12 oz can marked with a BB date of May 2015.

Huge, foamy tan head over a nearly opaque, dark brown body.
Rich, malty and complex. This drinks like an ale. Creamy smooth mouthfeel mimics a nitro tap origin. Lasting aftertaste of dark malts and earthy/herbal hops.

O: closer to a stout than any black lager I've had, this also may be the best.

Pours pitch black with a lingering head. Smell is of wonderfully charred malts. Taste is full of roasted malt with hints of coffee and chocolate. Hops provide just enough bitterness. Feel is absolutely velvety smooth. Light and very easy to drink. Tons of flavor for 4% ABV. One of the best black lagers currently out there IMO.

Very good. Appearance is a thick light tan, long lasting head with lots of lace and an almost opaque, but clear black brown color. Aroma is roast up front then dark leather, meat, coffee, malt. cocoa. Flavor's like nose, dryish at first, then with the other qualities including tang, there's a bit of sweet in the finish. Body is good, tho perhaps a bit thin. Very quaff-able. I'd like to have another right away.

3/19/15 (Can) - Dark black pour, roasted malt and coffee scents were very strong and desirable. Taste was even better, excellent roasted malt and chocolate. Very smooth to drink, minimal carbonation, light in both texture and ABV. Nice paring with desert. Overall very good offering!

Zomg, one of my biggest wants! And just sitting there at Fiama in Bellingham. I should qualify this, my oldest boy's fav stuffed bear is named Baba. Forgive me, I'm becoming verklempt (sp?).

Roasty dark malts, some bitter grassy hops. Looks great, tastes not too shabs.

A very mild, relaxing black lager. Easy on the bite and alcohol content, BABA goes down smooth. One minor drawback is a lack of confirmed character- nothing stands out. Black as coal, refreshing, non-bitter, and surprisingly light on the palette. Nice.

Poured into an IPA glass.

Look: The body is cola black with brown on the fringes. A light cream colored head dissipates, leaving a fine wisp with nice world map lacing.

Aroma: Toasted bread, charred grains, faint chocolate.

Taste: Very bright on the tongue with a tart, hoppy finish, but before that (!) there is a lot of roasted malts, charred grains, toasted bread and fain chocolate. Very malty.

Mouthfeel: Light bodied.

Overall: Excellent taste profile, easy drinking. I'll be revisiting this one I believe.

12 oz. bottle from Whole Foods. Nose of faint toast and yeast. Flavors of roasted coffee, smoke and bittersweet cocoa. Slight malt influence. Mildly bitter, yet mouth feel remains light and slightly watery with good carbonation. Dry, not sweet. Outstanding flavor for a light beer. Well done.

A: The beer is essentially jet black in color—only the faintest hints of brownish red hues are visible near the bottom of the glass when it is held up to a bright light. It poured with a finger high tan head that died down, leaving some lacing on the surface, a collar around the edge, and some lacing running down the sides of the glass.
S: Light to moderate aromas of dark malts are present in the nose along with some notes of cola and hints of burnt and roasted malts.
T: Similar to the smell, the taste has lots of flavors of dark malts along with notes of cola. A light amount of bitterness is present.
M: It feels light- to medium-bodied on the palate and has a moderate amount of carbonation.
O: For a beer that is relatively light in body, this is a very complex and flavorful brew. I definitely wouldn't mind having more than one of these in a sitting.

Pours a dark brown with tan head. Has a dark chocolate, coffee and roast nose with a light peat note in the aroma. The roast or peat comes through in the flavor with a almost coffee like bitterness. The coffee and roasted flavors remain in the aftertaste. Finishes dry almost tart. Some light astringency That's not unpleasant maybe from tartness? Reminds more of a robust porter with roast character.

Poured from a 12 ounce bottle into a porter/stout glass. Looks good in this style of glass, even if it might not be proper.

Sudsy oatmeal-colored head with a smattering of brown within that darkens it a bit. Lace is everywhere. Incredible persistence on the head. Pitch-black body.

Cocoa is all over this nose. I wasn't expecting that. I find most schwarzbiers to be subtler with the dark malts, but this is not at all. Very up front and almost milk chocolatey. Smells like dessert. Light floral notes are detectable but struggle to pierce the chocolate. I'm not mad at this. It smells tasty.

Roast malts take the front seat for the palate ride, as this could easily be mistaken for a stout as a porter based on the robustness of these malts. Only the grassy, earthy flavors that arrive mid-palate suggest to me this isn't a stout or porter and I'm questioning myself as I drink this, wondering if without knowing what it was, would I identify it as a schwarzbier? The cocoa flavors on the finish don't make it any easier to disabuse me of my thoughts of a darker ale.

It's quite a feat for Uinta to have squeezed so much aroma and flavor out of a beer that drinks so lightly. Carbonation tickles the tongue throughout and hops linger lightly and lend a touch of juicy sweetness before the dry cocoa finish. It's very enjoyable to drink.

This is a session beer if ever there were one. Low in ABV but big on flavor. I love it.
