Poured into a Seattle Beer Week pint glass. Pours a very dark mahogany brown, appearing nearly opaque black in the glass with a fine one finger light brown head with great retention and lots of lacing. Aroma of dark toasted malt, coffee, a hint of dark fruit. Flavor is dry, dark toasted malt with a hint of char, mild dark chocolate and coffee; finishes with a light grass hops bitterness. Medium bodied with good carbonation. A quite nicely done schwarzbier, hitting all the right notes with perhaps a bit more charry toastiness than most, which is nice. Full flavored for a 4% beer, impressive. I wouldn't mind tasting an imperial version of this one, but this delivers what it promises for a smaller version of the style. Well done.

Baba the Logger

In days of yore, when asked of your
Parents many chores, to have done for
The makings of a taking
For egg-bakings and tasteful shakings
Upon the maiden's floor.

And who did taste but he, while lost
Turnt amidst a blurring moss
When once did he walk, a man of log
Who longed as he strode a waking bog.
With a great big grin, strolling a muck-strewn aisle.

Baba the Logger, who once did offer
His right wife proper
With iron and leather, a hunk of his leg
While whispers echoed face to face.
The mirthful intent did wander.

Thick dark white head. Has a nice dark look. Has a roasted smell. Can taste roasted malts along with hops. Tastes a bit watered down. Would like for it to have more flavor.

Pours an effervescent chestnut with 2 fingers of tan head. Stellar head retention & lacing

S: Toastyness & a little roastyness, a little nuttiness as well

T: Follows the nose, a little brown bread as well, dryness as well, some pear notes up front. Dryness & toastyness as this warms, a little roastyness as well, some woody hops. Finishes dry, roasty with a little bit of jammyness

MF: Medium body with moderate carbonation

Pretty solid, easy to drink could use a little more fruittyness & hops are needed to nail the style

DATE TASTED: September 5, 2015 ... GLASSWARE: Hennepin pokal... OCCASION: putting Penn State's first loss to bed with Pitch Perfect and Shan... APPEARANCE: midnight black, 100% opaque body with an off-white head that fizzles to a strong, glass-clinging lacing... AROMA: an interesting mixture of soft, smoky, light cracker and some off-putting vegetable scents... PALATE: lively at the start; dry and smooth, with a full finish; silky good ... TASTE: immediate peat and scotch overtones--winning!--but little hop to speak of; a flattened, easy-drinking schwarzbier commensurate with coca-cola or A-Treat...OVERALL: drinkable, yes--but not robust as the label suggests...a reasonable offering...

Baba boasts a pretty stunning gravitational-singularity-depth of blackness, only hinting at some browns where the mocha-cream head meets the beer's event horizon. There's likewise a really nice nose: somehow both thickly burnt and cavalierly buoyant. The textures, too, are a study in opposition: a hint of ruddy heft at the back of the palate, yet otherwise a light (but not thin), crisp, clean character predominates, allowing hearty dark flavors to parade about, unmitigated and unburdened, within the drinker's maw. Those flavors burst with smoky-malt traits, dry—almost ashy—burnt wood and burnt brioche qualities whose sugars taste almost entirely eaten out by the yeast (though this schwarz is nonetheless a booze-limited beast, sitting at a very sessionable fraction of four-percent). There is a hint of that yeast, in point of fact, amongst some funky undertones that bring a shot of brightness, and fruity-cum-lagery character, to the primarily chthonic, charred composition of Baba's belly.

A black lager—but hardly a black sheep amongst Uinta's output—they've heaped the pyre with goods on this effort. A bell-sheep in the fosse, indeed.

This was an enjoyable schwarzbier. My one complaint is that along with the roastiness in the flavor was a touch of honey which I found to be out of place.

Poured from can into porter glass. Newbie reviewer, but have happily had this beer several times before. A few extra O points for great label and name.
Look: pours dark root beer color, black in glass with ruby root beer lighted at narrow bottom. Nice crowning two-finger taupe head. Head starts pockmarking quickly, collapses to rough 1/4 inch head before drinking. Dissipates on glass (lace?) while drinking.
Smell: coffee, hops, more than a hint of pee.
Taste: hard to ID any one taste, hops and coffee I guess, some sassafras in second half, but it is good, smooth yet lively, a trace of bitterness, which stays on roof of mouth.
Feel: medium body, creamy
Overall: one of my favorite beers, probably sessionable if the bitter aftertaste doesn't build up. Not a problem at all with one beer.

O - Baba is a decent schwarz.

Never been a big lager fan, but this has a surprisingly good stout/porter like flavor without being overpowering. Could have been a bit heavier but still very drinkable.

This is the kind of brew people should consider for a session beer. Low ABV, nice malt character, light roast on the palate, crisp lager finish which is great in hot weather, nicely hoppy without being overly bitter, and doesn't have the watered down quality that is infecting session IPAs left and right.

Pretty tasty Schwarzbier that has everything in the right place aroma and flavour wise. Lots of malt and roasted coffee, and is surprisingly easy to drink for a darker beer.

Just a little on the thin side, even for a black lager, but on the whole a readily available session dark it a more than reasonable price.

Pours an almost pitch black with a moderate head that dissipates into a thin lace. Aroma is malty and coffee like; almost like a stout. Taste of toasted malts with a nice hops finish. Creamy, smooth and light feel. Overall, I liked this one; it reminded me of a lighter stout or porter. Very drinkable.

Appearance wise, its a beautiful dark color, with very little head. This beer presents with a very subtle, almost too downplayed aroma. Notes of plum and cherry and slight smokiness. Taste and mouthfeel are the strong suit of this beer. Has the same underlying character of flavor of a stout or porter, but still the lightness and crispness of a lager. Same smokey, chocolatey plum, and a subtle touch of apple cider, to round it off. Not too sweet though. Well balanced with an unaggressive hop profile which cuts the sweetness without pretending to be something it is not. If you want a Black Lager, this is a very good choice.

On-tap at the Brass Tap, Greenfield, WI:

Pours black with a thin white head that leaves lacing.

The smell is of dark bread with restrained roast.

The taste is of dark malt with muted roast. Slightly mineral-like aftertaste.

It has a light to medium body.

It hits the style well enough. An easy drinker.

L: pitch black with inch of tan foam, very enticing.
S: mild chocolate aroma, some caramel.
T: Modestly bitter, mild chocolate, everything hits the palate and passes a short time later.
F: thin, modestly bubbly
O: this beer is certainly smooth. Its appearance might scare away the weak of heart but don't judge it by its cover, this is true to its lager name. As a stout lover I always have a preference for bolder beers but this is well executed for the style.

Black body with a clinging off-white head. Gentle aroma of toasted bread, burnt grain, subtle notes of tar and red grape. Clean. Pretty tasty stuff here - clean and crisp palate, toasty and chocolatey malt character without any heaviness. It's brought down slightly by a faint ashy character. Slight dark malt sourness in the finish along with a hint of dark fruit. Not a bad little beer.

Great look with a huge fluffy head that clings to the glass and has great retention. Smokey and sweet malt with earthy hops and a light lingering bitterness with some charred wood and bittersweet chocolate lingering. Crisp feel and very smooth With a drying finish. Terrific flavor for such a light beer. Nicely done and cool to see it is organically made as there are not many options in the category.

12 oz can marked with a BB date of May 2015.

Huge, foamy tan head over a nearly opaque, dark brown body.
Rich, malty and complex. This drinks like an ale. Creamy smooth mouthfeel mimics a nitro tap origin. Lasting aftertaste of dark malts and earthy/herbal hops.

O: closer to a stout than any black lager I've had, this also may be the best.

Pours pitch black with a lingering head. Smell is of wonderfully charred malts. Taste is full of roasted malt with hints of coffee and chocolate. Hops provide just enough bitterness. Feel is absolutely velvety smooth. Light and very easy to drink. Tons of flavor for 4% ABV. One of the best black lagers currently out there IMO.

Very good. Appearance is a thick light tan, long lasting head with lots of lace and an almost opaque, but clear black brown color. Aroma is roast up front then dark leather, meat, coffee, malt. cocoa. Flavor's like nose, dryish at first, then with the other qualities including tang, there's a bit of sweet in the finish. Body is good, tho perhaps a bit thin. Very quaff-able. I'd like to have another right away.

3/19/15 (Can) - Dark black pour, roasted malt and coffee scents were very strong and desirable. Taste was even better, excellent roasted malt and chocolate. Very smooth to drink, minimal carbonation, light in both texture and ABV. Nice paring with desert. Overall very good offering!
