Poured from a 12oz bottle into a US tumbler pint glass.

A: The beer is a deep dark brown color, with a medium beige head that fades slowly and leaves a thick lace on the glass.

S: The aroma contains coffee, roasted malts, chocolate, lager yeast and a touch of hops.

T: The taste starts out bready from lager yeast and a hearty roasted malt character. Then some flavors of black coffee and black chocolate come in along with some smokiness in the background. The hops presence is mild but complementary and brings a good balance. The after-taste is slightly bready and slightly smoky.

M: Crisp and smooth, medium body, medium carbonation, finish is slightly sticky.

O: Tasty, goes down easily, not too filling, very mild kick, good representation of style, this is a solid beer to drink for a while if you’re in the mood for the style.

12oz brown bottle with a freshness date.

LOOK: Nearly full on black, impressive lacing

SMELL: Soft charcoal, milk chocolate, faint oil hop, herbal, toasted bread, dried hay

TASTE: Mild roastiness, smooth, medium bodied, clean, balanced hopping, herbal, faintly salty, brown malt, toasted grapenuts, mildly roasty drying finish

A very sessionable brew, perfect for the winter and is a great substitute if you love Porters. Organic and all if you are into that, and all around great beer.

12 oz bottle. Hints of chocolate and french roast coffee in the smell. Not much head, moderate carbonation, nice lacing on the glass. The taste was chocolate, coffee, bready, and pleasantly balanced with light hops. Much lighter and crisper than I was expecting frpm the pitch black appearance. Very drinkable lager.

This black lager is delicious and smooth. It has great flavor and texture - it is not velvety like some other black lagers. Baba is a great session beer and my favorite black lager.

12oz cold can into tulip

Appearance - Jet black all the way through, 2 finger head was pretty dense with good retention and leaves a bit of wispy lacing

Smell - Light notes of bittersweet cocoa, hints of charcoal, smoke, and a feint vinous/raisin character

Feel/Taste - Light body with effervescent yet gentle carb comes off as smooth but watery. Taste up front is crisp but subtle bittersweet cocoa, roasted coffee, and a robust charcoal, smokey, grainy earthiness. As taste fades there is that feint raisin-fruity note, then moderate, drying bitterness from what I believe is solely roasted grain... Hops seem imperceptible, but may just be that well integrated. Finish is bone dry.

Overall - Wow, did Uinta ever fit a ton of roasty flavor into this very light beer! Unfortunately, it's body comes off as quite watery, which is probably to be expected at just 4% ABV. Also, I found the roasty charcoal aspect to be a bit much, which negatively affects the drinkability/ sessionability for me. Still, I respect what Uinta has done with this: it seems like a no-brainer session beer for a porter/stout lover.
