i was surprised at how much i enjoyed this one. black as night, with a off white creamy head. the nose was full of chocolates, roasted malts, a little coffee, cocoa, and some smoke. the taste followed the nose well but heavy on the roasted malts and smoke while minor on the chocolate and coffee - not much by way of the hops. went down quite easily, like a aqueous porter. all in all i was really happy with this beer and would definitely have again.

First, a brief (I promise) personal history. After a typically self-indulgent November-December during which my daily diet invariably included copious amounts of massively hopped, highly intoxicating, high-caloric beers, I took my now customary (and necessary) period of abstinence. A key goal once I resumed drinking was to try and discover beers I'd enjoy that were in a far more sessionable style. Which brings us to this evening's much-anticipated tasting of Uinta's Baba Black Lager.
Well, I quickly discovered the positive reviews were well deserved. This is a very tasty beer that belies its skimpy 4% ABV. Yes, I'd still prefer a Hop Stoopid. But I'll definitely be buying more of this. And the jet-black color is very cool.
Bottom line: If you, like me, have a wee bit of trouble with the concept of "moderation" and are looking to downgrade your ABVs without sacrificing taste, this is certainly worthy of your consideration.

Had at Bar of Soap Asheville. Poured into a pint glass.
A- Pours a mostly opaque black color with a 1/4 inch light tan head that retains a bit before becoming a mostly full sheer sheet of surface foam. Semi-resilient spackles of lacing.
S- Big aroma of roasted malt, chocolate, light smoke and burnt sugar. Quite sweet smelling. Also a bit nutty.
T- Flavor isn't as powerful. Dark roast and a mild bitterness without much else. Mild anise in the aftertaste.
M- Thin and watery with medium carbonation and a surprisingly lightish body
O- The aroma of this beer is a big teaser. You get all sorts of good roast notes and then the rest of the beer is a letdown. Such a shame.
