12oz bottle, packaged on 5/7/12. Mostly black appearance, with some light about the edges. Thin, light khaki foam, dissipating quickly. The beer has a fairly robust aroma of roasted malt and a splash of toffee.

The initial sip yields an intense, unexpectedly tangy sweet maltiness. It's a bit much on the tangy side at first, but it mellows after a few more sips, and considering the ABV you have to say it has a lot of flavor. There is moderate dryness with some light roasty grain character, coffee notes, and decent bitterness at the back. The mouthfeel is pretty nice, clean without being watery, with an appropriate amount of carbonation.

I cannot be sure if I like this beer or not, I certainly wasn't expecting a tartness to the roasted malts, but that sure makes it unique. Since it wasn't a boring, tasteless lager, I have to say it's worth a try.

[Poured into a straight Sam Adams glass]

I: A friend and I were in Whole Foods searching for a new beer to try, and spotted the last six pack of Baba. Sadly we only paid attention to the presentation, and not the style. I admit that I not very fond of lagers, but hey, I'm open to unique takes on the style.

B: [4.00% ABV. 12 Fl. OZ. 04/11/12] I really appreciate the amount of information on this bottle, sadly no back story. Bottle date, recommendation, ingredients (water, organic barley malt, hops, and yeast), organic label, and etc... The bottles glass is also working on this compass theme which is very interesting.

A: Black body with no transparency, with a foamy/frothy head (fast dissipation), and scattered lacing.

S: Smells like a lager. Grassy, some pine, light chocolate, molasses, and bread malt.

T: Chocolate, grassy, bread malt, and molasses. Safe to say that it follows the nose pretty well.

M: Slightly dry/slick/crisp finish, light/watery body, moderate carbonation, and little alcohol presence.

O: One of the best lagers I've ever had, but that's not saying much. The style is just isn't that great to my palate. This was like Steinlager Pure with cocoa added. The high point of the brew would be the presentation. It's better than domestic beer, but doesn't stand out among the craft. I don't recommend and wouldn't buy.

3/15/12 bottle date.

Color is dark but not quite black, red highlights noticeable, definite clarity there. Beige head retains well as a full cap leaving good lace along the way.

Nice scent, kind of a dusty chocolate/cocoa feel, bready lager malts, light hops. Reminds me of an oatmeal stout, surprising strength.

Taste unfortunately doesn't live up to the smell. Very light roasted and caramel malts, some lactose/milk stout type flavors. Some bready malts. A small dark fruit presence grows with warmth, light hoppage there as well.

It does feel a bit thin and watery, but it is 4% after all. Medium carbonation, wish the flavor was stronger.

Overall pretty decent considering the beer, the scent is great but the taste seems much weaker. Definitely dig the light+sessionable dark lagers but there are others I'd prefer.

Purchased a bottle of this while visiting Utah. The date said bottled on 6/5/12. Poured it into a pint glass.

A-Pure black, even when held to the light. One finger tan head, lacy sides. Frothy and bubbly. Looks good. Medium-bodied.

S-Coffee,licorice, molasses, smoked barley malts, slight dark chocolate.

T-Smoked barley, molassess, a little sense of smoked barley hops. The aftertaste was a little flat, yet dry. Also, the aftertaste was slightly metallic, but not enough to ruin the beer.

M-Watery and flat. Not too exciting.

Overall, I would buy this brew again. It could go well with heavier foods. It is a little watery, but the overall flavors were ok. I was surprised because Utah has its strange 4% ABV laws, so I was not expecting this beer to be as good as it was. Buy this brew and eat a reubon.

The aroma is lacking, it hat a smooth/buttery smell with a light amount of malt smell to it.

The pour was very bland, I wasn't expecting much of a head since mine was bottled on 1/03/12, so it is a 5 month old beer. It does have some nice lacing though.

It has a slight chocolatey and coffee like taste to it. I predominantly taste the unmalted hops. Still has the taste of a lager, but almost that nutty/coffee taste is what the black part of the lager brings to the table.

I love that this one isn't dry, but it is definitely a heavy beer! Would go great with certain foods I imagine! :)

Single 12oz “compass bottle” from Total Wine Park Rd in Charlotte. Into a shaker pint -

A: Pours black with a half finger of coca cola head (in both color and fizziness); not much lace.

S: Not much aroma; buttery, toasty malts.

T: Better than what I thought it would be based on smell; light roasted malt and chocolate; not much hop presence or bitterness.

M: Medium mouthfeel; high carbonation; tingly on the palate.

O: A pretty good black lager; crisp and roast; easy drinking; good, but not overly flavorful.

a: dark coffee color. thin tan head, minimial lacing.

s: roasted malts and nothing else, kind of bland.

t: has a nice subtle roastieness to it, a bit of chocolate and coffee hint at being in there.

m: a tad thin, like most lagers are. carbonation is good. some charred wood flavors on the after taste.

o: pleasantly surprised by this one.

P- Thanks to my buddy Trask in NC for this brew.

A- thick black like mdinight without the moon. A nice frothy head that is 2 fingers and leaves a brown lacing on my mug.

S-licorice, cocoa and a smokey charred wood aroma. Simple yet nice.

F-Robust charred and smokey malt with hints of cocoa powder.

M- Medium bodied which is on par for a lager. Wood and char remnants in mouth which i like.

O- Not a bad brew from Uinta and this is from first and i have heard all good things and this confirms it. An abover average beer.

Strong, smoky aroma has tones of licorice and charred wood. It pours a deep sable a whisker above black with a decent tan head. Flavor is woody and smoky, with hints of licorice and coffee. Texture is smooth and fizzy but body is average. Overall it's so-so, but worth sampling.

12oz bottle; tulip snifter.
bottled on 03/15/12

Pours black with a thin, very light tan head.

Roasty char notes in the nose.

Pleasant roasty malt, light hints of cocoa.

Medium-full body with average carbonation.

An enjoyable dark lager. Easy drinking, but without becoming boring.

Pours a dark ebony color with a tight, off-white head that leaves good medium sized chunks of lacing.

Smells of light roasted notes. Chocolate seems to dominate.

Tastes of the light roasted notes with a little bitterness. Notes of coffee and chocolate come through with some toasted bread. A touch of roasted bitterness combines some leafy hops to round out the finish.

Mouthfeel is medium with a smooth amount of carbonation.

Overall, this is a pretty solid beer, but could definitely use some refinement.
