Picked this up recently for $1.50 for a 120z bottle. Dark black with brown accents at the edges. Smells like burnt toast but in a good way as well as a honeyed cereal that I can't quite put my finger on, good smell. Taste is more like a standard black lager, a tiny bit of roasty malt, not nearly as good as the smell.

A- Poured into a mug with a creamy light tan head. About two fingers in size and good retention. Tons of lace up top as the head dies and it continues all the way down the glass.

S- A mix of dark brown sugars, roast malt, cereal grain, bread and some hops, mostly earthy and floral types.

T- Pretty much follows the nose with some dark fruits in the mix. Brown sugar, molasses, cereal, bread, earthy and floral hops, some lager yeast presence as well.

MF- Highly carbonated and slightly thin body, but it is a low alcohol lager. Fair bitters from the hops.

Solid black lager that drinks smoothly and has a pretty nice mix of flavors.

12 oz can, best by date of 10/17/13 stamped on bottom of can.

almost black, but brown in the edge of the glass. khaki colored head, good retention with decent lacing. smell is a bit toasty and roasty. mild bitter cocoa. taste is dry, slightly smokey and charcoal. a little sweet cola flavor in the finish. good balance. medium body, moderate smooth carbonation. good for style.

overall - a nice easy drinking everyday beer that is still very flavorful.

Zomg, one of my biggest wants! And just sitting there at Fiama in Bellingham. I should qualify this, my oldest boy's fav stuffed bear is named Baba. Forgive me, I'm becoming verklempt (sp?).

Roasty dark malts, some bitter grassy hops. Looks great, tastes not too shabs.

Black color with a thick head with medium retention and leaving a wall of laces.
Aroma of milky chocolate, raw grains and roasted malts.
Flavor is less straightforward and therefore more interesting than aroma. Hops successfully emerge from its roasted, nutty and smoked malts. Notes of citrus, dark chocolate, iced coffee, charcoal and earth. Dry and bitter aftertaste with a lingering smoked and roasted characteristic.
Light body with appropriate carbonation. Perfect sweetness level.
Excellent brew among its style. More flavorful than regular Schwarzbier, but still refreshing and with good drinkability.

This beer is a dark brown colored liquid, with a slightly read hue. Moderate tan head. The aroma is malty, with a notable smoke, roast, and earthy quality. The smoke note continues through the taste, which has a touch of astringency. It's a thinner-than-necessary beer, with some sweetness and a background of under-ripe fruit. The smoky aroma is the most intriguing thing about this brew. All in all, this one is just okay.

Great look with a huge fluffy head that clings to the glass and has great retention. Smokey and sweet malt with earthy hops and a light lingering bitterness with some charred wood and bittersweet chocolate lingering. Crisp feel and very smooth With a drying finish. Terrific flavor for such a light beer. Nicely done and cool to see it is organically made as there are not many options in the category.

Two fingers of head on a black body.
The aroma has a light scent of roasted malt.
The taste has some burnt wood, roasted malt and a lemon bitter (mild) finish.
The texture is crisp with moderate carbonation and medium body.
A decent black lager, though the taste was heavy on the burnt wood.

12 oz. bottle. Bottled on 08/14/12. As usual, great looking Uinta bottle/label.

Dark root beer brown body. Some light gets through the edges, revealing a clear beer. Good inch of dense, pillowy, cappuccino brown head. Nice lacing. Earthy, roasted malt aromas. Tobacco, dark chocolate, and a hint of licorice as well.

Roasted barley and coffee notes up front. Slight cardboard flavor as well. Singed caramel and more roasted malts fill up the palate. Tobacco and earthy, peaty notes into the finish. Roasted coffee bitterness in the end, with lingering semi-sweet chocolate. Moderate body, with medium carbonation. A nice session beer with good flavor and complexity.

Poured into nonic pint glass. Pours dark brown with light brown head. 1 Finger of head present initially, dissipates to a thin layer quickly. Nice lacing is left around glass. There are some ruby highlights at the edge of the glass. The smell features roasty chocolate notes along with noticeable lager yeast character. There are subtle hints of smoke present. The taste has a much heavier presence of smoke, almost a campfire like woodiness. Bitter waves of roast come through. Minimal hop presence noted. This beer feel very light with somewhat high carbonation. There is certainly a lot of flavor packed into this small beer with smoke being the main note. This is a great example of the style.

I really like the deep rich black color of this lager but the head had little retention. When it did build it was a mass of fine bubbles that coalesced to a tight foam.

The nose is a dry chocolate, roasted coffee, smoke and a marshmallow like lactose-sweetness.

The flavors are tempered but rich with a dry chocolate, Graham cracker, smoky ember, caramel malt and a lactose-sweetness. There is a slight coffee roast taste but it's hidden amongst the stronger flavors.

The feel is lagerish with its ease and smoothness but when you invoke the more stout like qualities I tend to enjoy more thickness.

This is easily sessionable but has varietal and diverse flavors to make it a special beer.

Black with a nice light tan quilt. Smells malty, some coffee, some soil, some leather - all components come together nicely. I like the nose. Robust flavor with leather, cocoa, dark chocolates, coffee (espresso tradiitional), a slight earthy character. well fucking done. Medium on full bodied with moderate, but prickly carb. This is a sincerely well done beer. Absolute delight for the style. Really recommend this.

Cellar temp bottle poured into a mug.

The beer pours a deep mahogany with some ruby highlights. Creamy beige head foams up several cm with a gentle pour. The head fades slowly to a sturdy surface layer and leaves tight lattice on each sip.
Aroma is rich and malty with some roasted malt notes and toffee. Not quite roasty enough to call it burnt, but definitely roast malt. No hop presence on the nose. Fairly enjoyable nose.
First sip reveals an average body with fine tingly carbonation. The texture is silky smooth and the beer is very easy to drink.
Flavor is roasted malt and some molasses and brown sugar. Again no real hop notes to speak of and the beer finishes a little sweet. No booze and a very drinkable, easily sessionable beer.

Well made and interesting. This is a good beer.

A very good schwarbier indeed.
A nice color contrast with a nearly opaque deep ruby amber body and tall mocha head.
Plenty of lacing too.
The aroma has a rich with roasted malts and some sutle smoke kiln.
The taste is the same. Luscious smokey malts, roasted malts almost tastes like a raunchbier.
Smooth drinking and I like the sutle hints of smokiness that gives it some character. All in all this is a good easy drinking beer.

Dark brown pour out of the can results in a large beige two finger head. It leaves quite a bit of ringed lacing on the glass following some pretty good retention.

Tons of roasted and even aromas, chocolate, lighter coffee and charred malt. More like a stout than a lager.

Opens with that nice roasted malt flavor, chocolate, caramel sweetness that dips into some oily licorice and herbs from the hops. Runs into a metallic finish, rather bitter edge as well.

Hefty body with average or maybe slightly below average carbonation. No alcohol burn and the twinge of metal in the finish is hard to fight through.

Black lager but really more like a stout in aroma and body, the lager yeast must really not play nice with the roasted malt since there are some off flavors coming through the veil of chocolate and dark flavors. I think I could pass this off to my stout lovers buddies when they need to session something.

Robust brown body capped with a very thick, long lasting, creamy head. Roasted malt nose; slightly chocolate scent deeply buried within. The taste comes across with a mellow sweetness (like a subdued Milk Dud), with a comparable subtle bitterness. Light bodied, clean and dry finish.

A good tasting, light-bodied dark lager. The body is almost featherweight, but I suppose that goes with the lager style. If a porter or stout seems like too much at the time, but you want a dark beer flavor, this one is a good choice.

Surprising amount of flavor from a 4% abv beer. This one is the essence of a good "session beer" within the limits usually prescribed on this site.

Poured into a pint glass. Very dark brown color, opaque with light coming through all over when held to a light. Medium size tan head with decent retention Thick bands of lacing.

Smell is fairly good as well, roasted malts, coffee, a little floral aspect.

Good strong taste for a low abv beer. Roasted malt, breadiness, coffee, a touch of hops bitterness. Very pleasant.

Mouthfeel just right for a lager. Light and crisp.

Overall a nice flavorful lager, just right for mass consumption or a tasty lawnmower beer.

I picked this up as part of a build-your-own six pack for $9.99 at the Binny's store in Bloomingdale, IL, making it $1.67 for a single 12oz bottle. No freshness date.

The beer poured black, of course, and made a 2-finger mocha colored head that lasted quite awhile. It also left quite a bit of nice lacing on the sides of the glass.

Coffee and dark chocolate smell along with lots of roasted malts.

Wow is this beer thin! Roasted malt and coffee dominate the taste with a touch of dark chocolate in the background. Only a mild hop bitterness, which is surprising considering it has a 32 IBU rating.

It tastes good and goes down easy but has the consistency of water with fairly high carbonation. A very light beer both in body and in alcohol content. It has a lingering coffee flavored aftertaste.

If you like light beers, this is a good one with more flavor than most.

Review from 7/11/12: pours pitch black color with a creamy 2 finger tan head that was full of bubbles and faded slowly leaving great spotty foamy lacing and foamy rings as it went down.

Smells of rich roasted malts, chocolate, light vanilla, coffee, lemon zest, citrus hops, herbs, charcoal, piney hops and hints of flowers; roasted malts and hoppy notes work very well together, adding a fine bitterness that trails off on the sweet side.

Tastes like it smells, with roasted malts, chocolate, light vanilla, coffee, lemon zest, herbs, charcoal, piney hops, caramel, molasses, toasted grains and hints of flowers; complex and very tasty, getting better as it warms and letting the roasted malts synch up with the hops for a sweet and bitter finish that trails off like burnt coffee.

Mouthfeel is creamy and slick, with very light carbonation, a medium body and a chewy feel that runs off bitter. Overall a very tasty black lager that I'd definitely recommend.

12 oz can was poured into a pint glass.

Appearance: This beer poured a one finger mocha head that reduced to a thin layer. It is a pitch black color with no clarity or bubbles seen coming up through the glass.

Smell: Roasted coffee, chocolate, earthy lager yeast, and a little smoke.

Taste: Roasty and robust, mocha, lager yeast, and a little bitter smoke.

Mouthfeel: Light bodied, smooth, low to medium carbonation, crisp, a little creamy, and refreshing.

Overall: Pretty solid black lager/Schwarzbier. Lots of character with that light feeling. Love it.

12 fl oz. can, with best before 12/18/2013 'earth, mind, & beer' printed on the bottom of the can. My first review of a beer by Uinta Brewing Co., and my first review of a "black lager" or schwarzbier as it is listed on BeerAdvocate. Not sure what to expect; keeping an open mind.

Poured into a Firestone Walker pint glass.

A - Pours two fingers of creamy tan / khaki colored froth on top of a dark brown-red-cola colored body. Ruby hues when held to the light. Some bubbly lacing on the glass.

S - Smell is of deep dark roasted barley and malts, black coffee, and some earthiness / nuttiness.

T - Taste follows the nose: big roasty toasty malt and barley presence, iced black coffee, earth, twigs, tree nuts. Slight metallic and mineral taste in the finish. Reminds me of what a nice porter tastes like. Decent carbonation.

M - Creamy and smooth, with some roasted notes leftover on the palate, and sticky in the finish. A thin, watery feel, but it was to be expected.

Overall, an impressive, smooth, and flavorful beer for being of such a low abv. Nicely made with organic ingredients, awesome can art, and a medium-fullish body; probably not a beer I could drink very many of, despite it's low 4.00% abv. Still, a fun beer that I would drink again, and I look forward to more from Uinta Brewing Co.

A - A finger's worth of fairly thick moderately dense light brown colored foam... Modest at best retention gives way to a full web of lacing and a fairly thick foam collar... It may be deemed a black lager, but this one is really a deep rich chocolatey brown color that allows a slight bit of light to leak in around the edges of the glass... Some quick paced carbonation streaks can be seen rising towards the top of the glass under close examination...

S - Fairly subdued and rather muted, but still quite enjoyable... Lightly roasted malts... A hint of coffee... A hint of chocolate... Perhaps some dark bread notes... Not much else... A little more umph in the category would have gone a long way...

T - Just about what I expected... Lightly roasted malts... Some faint hints of coffee and chocolate... Perhaps a bit nutty as well... The finish has a slightly burnt or charred character to it...

M - Light bodied... Light carbonation... Goes down smooth... Starts sleek and turn a slight bit chalky at the finish...

D - Quaffable and rather enjoyable... It depends how you're viewing this beer... If you look at it compared to all of beerdom, it's a fairly pedestrian average at best offering... If you look at it solely as a session brew, it's a very nice offering from Uinta... Lots of flavor and pretty decent character for a 4% ABV offering, especially for one of such dark coloring... I'm quite happy with and would seriously consider pick-up a sixer when I'm looking for an enjoyable session beer...

A: Pours a dark mahogany color with 2 fingers of tan head that fades down to a cap. Leaves some nice lacing

S: Roasted malts, dark chocolate, and coffee stand out the most. A light fruitiness is present as well. Slightly acrid

T: Follows the nose. Roasty and chocolatey to start, with the coffee following closely behind. Finishes lightly bitter with more roast and a little char

M: Medium bodied with moderate carbonation

O: A nice sessionable brew from Uinta. Very easy to drink. Good price. Try some

Deep black in color with a nice sized coffee colored head on top. Very nice roasted and grainy aroma. Trace of malty sweetness. Mellow roasted and dark grain flavors. Touch of burnt caramel going on. Quick hop bite at the end. Nice mouthfeel-higher level of CO2 gives it a slight zing on the tongue. A lot of flavor for such a low abv. Very sessionable and enjoyable.

Pours deep brown with a light cream head. The skim of foam reduces to a ring, but you still get some lace.

Dark cocoa and mild coffee aromas. A little nutty note.

Nice surprise here. Coffee, cocoa, some nuts, mild bitterness. Long finish with all of these elements present. Nice domestic version of the style. Nice and malty.

Lighter bodied, good carbonation.

Very nice. Drinkable, tasty, no harsh edges or horrible flaws.
