Part of my NC haul, wish we could get these beers here in Oklahoma...

Pours mahogany with caramel colored head. Good lacing & above average head retention

S: Mucho dark fruit, carob, fusel alcohol, woody notes, licorice & smoke

T: Follows the nose, a touch of chocolate & charred grain up front. Black currant,, charred grain, a touch of ainise & carob as this warms, plus woody dryness, plums & a touch of leafy hops, & bit of medicinal/sasparilla sweetness. Finishes with a bit of charred grain, plums, some caramel, woody dryness

MF: Slick with silky carbonation, medium bodied with sticky notes

A top notch Baltic Porter, another winner from the Crooked Stave line, this one drinks so easy, yet highly complex

In a snifter this beer was black in color with a thin tan head.

It had a roasted malt aroma that seemed to be more on the chocolate side. There was also more than a hint of vanilla.

Very nice taste. Sweet chocolate, a tiny bit of coffee. Vanilla came through well, as did a bit of oak.

A fairly rich beer, one that wanted to be sipped.

Poured into becker pint glass; jet black with an awesome brown head from an easy pour that doesn't fade at all, leaving nice lacing as it slowly descends.
Smells of big chocolate, coffee, booze, metallic malt. A big smell, delicious.
Tastes like big chocolate and coffee, slightly tart, very big and malty, dark bread. BIG taste.
Mouthfeel is HUGE, creamy and smooth.
`Overall, this is such a big beer I regret choosing it as the second beer for the evening. Big beer, big mouthfeel, damn.

In a snifter from a bomber.

A- light, foamy espresso head forms into a plateau, and lace is scattered everywhere. Pitch black body with zero clarity.

S- creamy sweet malt flavor, the trade mark Uinta floral hop aroma (smells similar to Dubhe), faint chocolate, earthy notes. Caramel.

T- dark bitter chocolate, caramel, a touch of floral hops, vanilla.

M- thin and viscous with a bitter bite and some minor booziness. The finish lingers bitterlike.

O- A good beer but I remember it being close to perfection on my first try. I guess my taste has changed or evolved.

750ml, caged and corked Burgundian bottle. Thanks be to doktorzee for grabbing this for me in Vegas last month. Nice to see my workout today is wrestling the cork out of this one, sheesh.

This beer pours a pretty solid ebony, with prominent basal cherry cola highlights, and a roiling tower of frothy, foamy, and rocky tan head, which leaves a thorough array of chunky chain-link fence lace around the glass as it slowly settles to an attractive whipped-cream cap.

It smells of bittersweet chocolate, roasted bready caramel, sour milk-laced coffee, natural vanilla, candied sugar floss, a bit of barrel stave wooden astringency, Nordic black licorice, and earthy, leafy, and slightly perfumed hops. The taste is really bittersweet cocoa and lactic acid-heavy medium-roast chain restaurant coffee, a more Twizzlers-friendly licorice character, gritty toasted caramel malt, reserved vanillan oak barrel notes, a removed Bourbon booziness, middling wet tobacco, dry black fruit - think stale fig Newtons and that bag of raisins that your wife forgot to seal back up - and more understated earthy, leafy hops.

The bubbles are a bit frizzy up front, but settle to a dull hum soon enough, the body a bit on the light side of medium weight, and rather tight in its seemingly unassailed smoothness. It all finishes off-dry, the lingering chocolate, caramel malt, and milky essences not yet devoid of sweetness, despite the continuing onslaught of coffee, bare wood, and alcohol.

This seems to be what happens when you drop a porter into some American whiskey barrels - the base beer's robust (I'm assuming, here) attributes, while not exactly disappearing, still have to endure a large dose of the ol' thinning barrel treatment. Yeah, that's the flipside of the whiskey-cask aging coin - if the big caramel, vanilla, and oak woodiness don't honour their paychecks by doing their song and dance, we're left in a fix. Not a bad thing, per se, but a reduced one, all the same.

A - black with a thick, brown head that has great retention

S - roasted malts, citrus, coffee

T - creamy, citrusy, coffee, roasted malts, sugary

M - full bodied, smooth, well carbonated

This is an interesting beer. It has most of the typical notes that one would expect from the style, but there is an intense citrus character throughout. I won't say I didn't like it, but it wasn't what I was expecting. Once I came around to the blend of coffee, citrus, and some burnt sugar notes all blended together, I really enjoyed this beer. It's worth checking out.
