Tasted on the sampler at the brewpub. The beer menu describes this as a "crossover" beer for beginners. This golden-pouring brew has a pleasant but subtle taste - while its not a beer that you'd put on your alter of greatness it is very good within its class. I'd call this a "baby" saison if anything.

Another big "thank you" goes out to Hoppymeal for sending me a box full of saisons the other day, cheers Derek! Walldorff's Saison sports a surprisingly clear body on the first pour. I can easily see through the polished golden body. Streams of carbonation shoot up from all over the glass. The head is perfectly white and caps off at two fingers before it slowly fades to a thick cap. A couple thick, clumpy chunks of lace get left behind here and there while I drink. This is a fine looking saison.

The nose has super fruity tendencies with notes that remind me of New Glarus's Impy Saison. A huge blast of vivid apricot hits immediately with juicy peach not far behind. Gritty pear and softening green apples play roles as well. This saison smells like a fruit salad with just a touch of must covering it all. Sugar cookie maltiness lays down the much needed foundation. Each swirl of the glass makes the aroma explode.

The fruitiness isn't quite as intense as it was on the nose but it's still present in handfuls. Musty peachiness gets the ball rolling while gritty pear, mushy green apple, and peppery apricot all follow closely behind. There's a hint of banana here and there as well. The sugar cookie maltiness comes along on the swallow with a touch of tartness from the peach quality. This is a damn fine American saison; I'm struggling between a 4-4.5 on the flavor. The complexities are all there and it's incredibly juicy.

The body has a light feel to it and the carbonation is dialed in on the high side. This saison moves quickly along the front of the tongue and the carbonation is just short of prickly but settles and becomes fairly airy on the swallow. The bubbles scrub my tongue with each drink and the finish is slightly dry.

I could drink this beer all day long on a warm afternoon like today. The lively carbonation and refreshing fruitiness keep the glass tilted.

Apparently, Walldorff is manned by a former Founder's brewer. If their other beer is to the same quality level of this saison it's a place to keep an eye on. This is one of the better saisons I've had of late and I'm glad I got the chance to give it a go. Thanks for the bottle Derek, it's hitting the spot!
