While nearby yesterday, I stopped at Whip In for the first time to see what I'd been missing by doing my beer shopping mainly at Grape Vine Market and Spec's. Inside, the store/restaurant is dark and a bit cave-like. Through the convenience store portion of the building, a few sets of beer coolers and shelves hold some good offerings, but not much I can't find elsewhere in town. The number of Belgians available was probably the highlight. My hopes of finding aged beers weren't realized, as all I really saw were a couple bottles of 2008 Avery Samael's Ale. Ended up buying a 750 of Saison Dupont and a six pack of SN Stout.
Service seemed more like a convenience store than a beer store, but I didn't buy anything on-tap or order food, either. Prices seemed above average for both the on-tap beers and the bottles, maybe a dollar more per item than at other places.
I'm glad I finally got to Whip In, and I'd like to stop again for a pint and a meal.

Went to the Whip In on a Saturday night with a group of four. The place was crowded inside, but plenty of seating was available in the patio (it was a chilly night). We were able to get a booth next to the stage - an excellent seat to take in the whole club. Beers were picked out by a regular Whip In visitor in our group, and he made excellent choices for us, starting with the 'Namaste' brewed beers, made on site - I had the Bitterama, which had Earl Grey tea infused flavors. A really good Blue Grass band was playing on stage, and the crowd was enjoying the music. We ordered several Indian-themed appetizers, which were good. Service was also very good. There is a beer bar and a separate wine bar, which had a great selection by the glass.
The Whip In has an awesome selection of beers on tap, and an amazing selection of beers you can buy from the coolers, with an emphasis on local Texas brews. The rule is that you can buy a bottle of beer from the coolers & drink it at your table for a $1.00 corkage fee.
This place has a great vibe, and if I lived in Austin I would definitely become a regular here!
