A very drinkable, enjoyable beer. Smells inviting, tastes fresh and has a number of different taste themes all working together. Finishes clean with no unpleasant aftertaste. It just seems right to me and I would be hard pressed to order something else if this was available.

Served on-tap at The Tavern in Old Salem in Winston-Salem, NC

A: Pours a crystal clear pale yellow in color with moderate to heavy amounts of visible carbonation and some light notes of golden yellow highlights. The beer has a finger tall fizzy foamy bright white head that reduces to a medium sized patch of very thin film and a thin ring at the edges of the glass. Light to moderate amounts of lacing are observed.

S: Light to moderate aromas of biscuit malts with a lighter amount of cereal grains. There are light to moderate aromas of grassy and spicy hops as well.

T: Upfront there is a moderate flavor of biscuit malts with a lighter amount of cereal grain malts contributing just a touch of sweetness. That is followed by light to moderate flavors of grassy and spicy hops which contribute a light to moderate amount of bitterness which lingers for a short amount of time.

M: Light to medium bodied with moderate amounts of carbonation.

O: Well balanced between the sweetness of the malts and the bitterness of the hops making it easy to drink and quite enjoyable. A classic example of the style.

Appearence: Pours Straw Gold with a nice 2 finger frothy off white head that fades over a couple minutes. Ever so slight haze... Just under crystal clear. I would have gotten better lacing if I would have drank more down when it came to me cold and with frothy head, but what fun is that?

Smell: Sweet Aroma of Pilsner malt, as indicated by a pleasant level of DMS. Very slight toffee sweet overtone mixes with the DMS, If it is diacytl it is literally ON my threshold. Very mild noble hop aroma that lends or blends into an earthy mineral note. Beautiful.

Taste: Clean and malty with a small and desirable hint of DMS that fades as the bitterness balances the initial malt sweetness. Very nice balance as indicated by the gradual morphism from sweet and grainy to dry and lightly bitter. Mineral on the tongue just after swallowing when drank over top of the tongue. Clean and focused.

Mouthfeel: Sweet to start and drying in the finish averaging on mid round. Balance is impeccable.

Very Very tasty brew. This beer to me exemplifies a German premium lager.

Poured on tap in a shaker at The Pantry (minus the green food coloring offered due to St. Patty's). Crisp golden color like a mildly tarnished golden wedding band with a cap of thick white head that kept pretty good retention and a touch of lacing. Smelled a lot of biscuit mix, freshly kneaded in the kitchen from several feet away as well as a touch of some citrus. The citrus came out more pronounced in the taste and mouthfeel, almost like a bit of lime zest and/or rind along the back of a bready malt. The mouthfeel was pretty light and just a very small touch of carbonation and spritz. Pretty good for a lager overall.

500ml bottle enjoyed @ Oktoberfest, Munich, 27.09.2012.

A: Cristal clear yellow color forming a big bubbled white head. Medium to low retention with a thin layer that lasts forever on the top

S: Sweet grains and flowery hops. Very Lager yeasts in the nose. Bready. Hops are very citrus

T: Sweet grains upfront with strong notes of white bread, Lager yeasts and flowery hops. Metallic and a bit ashy. In overall, a dry taste with a stingy hop bitterness in the end

M: Light body and medium carbonation. Sweet grains, stingy and quite crispy bitter aftertaste

O: Good drinkability. An authentic Bavarian Lager. Good session beer

Thin head on a clear straw body. A little lemon custard with pale malts but overall very light. Flavor is a touch bitter with more pale malts and grains but very simple. No off putting aftertaste. Light body and moderate to high carbonation. Overall drinkable but simple. Not bad not great.

A - poured with a large head of white foam on a clear, golden body. The head settles quite slowly and leaves nice lace.

S - rich, thick malt aromas with light, spicy hops.

T - clean malt up front with a rich sweetness that kicks in towards the finish. Lingering malt with just a hint of spicy hops and light bitterness.

M - medium-thick body, moderate carbonation, and a balanced finish.

D - a very nice german lager, the aroma is virtually perfect and the flavor profile is spot on as well.

Served in a flared pokal at bauer's Brauhaus.

Watchin' Jeopardy! and drinkin' German brews. Good times. This one pours a clear pale straw topped by a finger of relatively short-lived white foam. The nose comprises grass, flowers, light wheat, and a very light twist of lemon. The taste takes a simpler tack, rocking just wheat and flowers, almost pilsner-like. The body is pretty light, with a very light moderate carbonation and a smooth feel. Overall, a decent helles lager, but lacking any kind of real character, any kind of discerning remarks, so to speak. It's nowhere near bad, just not something I would aim for, especially with other quality German choices around.

Tapped from a 1gal 1qt 9fl oz mini keg with the dates 17.03.11 and EXP 12.2011 stamped on the bottom.

Appearance - Gold body with fine suspended particulate matter. One finger white head with decent retention and good stick.

Smell - Strong musky corn and wet cardboard. Sweet. No hoppiness.

Taste - Light. Metallic finish. Stale water aftertaste. Corn in the body. The metallic taste really ruins it.

Mouthfeel - Light to medium body. Not quite refreshing.

Overall Drinkability - It's not a bad beer. Perhaps slightly better than average for the style.

on tap at devils den in philly

Pours a clear golden color with plenty of bubbles. Thick layer of white head rests on top, fades slowly with plenty of patchy lacing.

Soft scents of lemon peel and straw. Hints of citrus and spice with faint sweetness and a metallic note.

A little bitter up front with faint hops. Citrus and lemon peel with a thin straw malt backbone. Light metallic touch towards the middle, finishing a little dry and crisp.

Lighter medium body, higher carbonation, bubbly and somewhat refreshing. Drinks okay, but not exactly thrilling in any specific department.

Enjoyed on-tap @ the iTap House in Soulard (St. Louis), MO for $15. Tapped into my new Spaten Litre Seidel Glass and enjoyed in this large of a glass because of the iTap Soulard Sunday Opening Event. The First Litre was $15 and after that $10 for every Litre refill.

Aroma- Grainy, sweet, malty, and very boring. Only hints of all of these while it seems like over 5 minutes I have my nose down into my litre. Are you going to drink that Litre?

Appearance- Received with a 2 finger (or more), foamy head that dies quickly but leaves a ring of lacing. Pale gold color body that is clear and has huge carbonation bubbles. Lacing is good.

Flavor- Light grains and malts, sweet, and has no bitterness at all on the finish. A great refreshing taste and clean!

Mouthfeel- Light-Medium Bodied, High Carbonation, Smooth, and leaves bit of grain on the palate.

Overall Impression- Not my favorite of the Helles Lagers, but still brings me back to Austrian/German festival days. Easy drinking, light, clean, and bottoms up! Prost!

Pours a very clear, pale straw color, with an inch of egg shell head that falls to about a quarter inch that really sticks around and has good cling. Just a bit of visible carbonation. There's a lot of sweet malt bread notes in the nose. A bit of underlying grassy hop provides some grounding. There is a bit of lemon peel that comes across in the bouquet, as well. Bread malt notes are very prominent in the taste, with a bit of hop bitterness making its presence felt at the sides and back of the tongue. Finishes on the sweet side, with the malts winning out over the hops. While not especially engaging, the tastes are all very smooth throughout their life on the palate. The feel is a bit more pedestrian than the taste: It's light-bodied and quite effervescent, with some acidity and crispness.

This is a classic-tasting and very well-balanced lager. What you see is what you get with this one: The lack of surprises or significant complexity in this one is compensated by smoothness and solid flavors throughout. It may not raise many eyebrows, but it really does everything that a good lager should.

On tap at Bier Markt in downtown Toronto.

Poured into a Spaten stange glass. Pale golden in colour, the pour left a billowy white head, which receded into a fine ring. Lacing patches throughout the pint.

Nose is grainy, sweet, soft floral hops, apple peel.

Tastes like many other Oktoberfest lagers I've had over the years, though this is a good thing! Sweet, mild hop character, lemon, apple, some bread/graininess. Light bodied, crisp mouthfeel, easy drinker.

A tasty Oktoberfest-style lager, refreshing an easy to quaff in large quantities. Nothing exciting about the brew, but you can tell that this brew is crafted well for summer/festival consumption.

Had on tap at cock and bull served in your standard pint.

A- straw yellow that is translucent with a magnifying glass effect. White head holds up for a short while That recedes to a uniformed group of condensed white bubbles.

S- my nose is telling me straight lager yeast with a Tad of musty basement. Maybe some wheat in the mix. Pretty plain and uneventful.

T- honestly it is a bmc lager on roids. More straightforward yeast and hops that fade to a rice type flavor. Reminds me of a ' double ' Miller lite.

M- light and crisp, very easy to drink. Good carbonation That is not to prickly like most lagers.

Overall not a very flavorful beer. Tastes are lacking But the criteria for the style is good. For me its not very good, I like more complexity in my beers

From the "Mini-Keg" (can we call that "on tap"?) Spaten premium pours the quintessential 10k gold color with a wispy head that lasts long enough for you to admire it and bring it to your lips without having to indulge in a massive intake of foam.
Clean, relatively light in body with a underlying taste of citric lemon, this brew can be quaffed endlessly without any challenge. Slightly off-dry in the mouth and totally refreshing, this brew satisfies without being over the top or over endowed. A great all around, year long lager that is authentic and genuinely Germanic and satisfies with ease.

Purity law kicks ass. Why can't american premies brew this pure? Perfect balance of water hops and malt. A bit grassy hop bite that is subsided by malt. Easy drinking beer can easily put away several pints of this beer. The Mouthfeel is a bit tingly on the front of the tongue but goes away in a second.

My girlfriend notes this doesn't taste good with pretzels and I would agree.

A- pours a couple shades darker than straw with a thin slick of a head that bears little lacing.
S- Smell is of slightly earthy and grassy aromas, with lingering malt sweetness.
T- Rather crackery flavor, with grassy hops and vague apple peel flavors.
M- Good body to it for style, though I found this one somewhat undercarbed.
D- Light, crisp, refreshing. Very drinkable and unlikely to slow you down. All in all a good helles.

0.5 L is the appropriate size to have of this beer. Served in a wheat beer glass for some reason. Beer looks like a cartoon a child would draw of a beer, its yellow, light, clear, heavily carbonated, nice white head that falls away but doesn't leave lacing on the glass. This is the type of beer that when its poured, enhanced sound effects are needed, fade aways to running horses or a close up of a thumb rubbing ice off of a glass, this is a real beer.

Joking aside, it smells like pilsner malt and its a little sweet but has an edge to it. Smells exactly what I expect it to smell like.

Beer has an odd late bitterness at the back that lingers in what could, if I were more cynical, could be described as an aftertaste, but its not a swallow flavor its a late grainy/hoppy bitterness. The mouthfeel is like water, seriously, its wet and thin and light, easy drinking for sure. The forward of the beer is mildly sweet and middle falls a little flat. It finishes well, except for that distracting bitterness. Its pretty good and I'd have it again. Its a good lawnmower beer.

On tap at Gourmet Haus Staudt.

It pours a pale and perfectly clear straw-yellow. A two finger head rests on top, retaining nicely and leaving a bit of lacing behind.

The aroma is light but clean, bordering on bland. It's lightly sweet and malty, a bit floral and soapy. Not bad, but there's not much to it.

The taste can pretty much be summarized by the word "meh", but since BA reviews require more characters than that, I guess I'll extrapolate. It's malty, clean, sweet without any hops to balance the malt; it fades into nothing. There's no finish, not much in the way of nuance. It's in no way terrible, but it is poorly balanced and extremely boring. The sweetness seems to stick to the palate after a while, which makes this difficult to drink in any large quantities.

Spaten Munchner Hell poured a lighter amber color, with almost no head. There wasnt much of a smell to it either. It tasted very much like a typical lager, but a bit stronger, and smooth. It like lagers had an easy drinkability. Overall a better lager, easy to drink, a good beer.

Had this beer for the first time on tap in a German restaurant in Hudson Wisconsin.

Straw yellow in the mug, with a pure white foamy head.

On the nose, notes of grain, lemon, and a touch of floral hops.

Taste was fresh and snappy. Fairly complex malt profile, touch of citrus zest on the smooth finish.

Easy to drink. Looked forward to the next one.

This was a bit of a sleeper...had it in the bottle a few times, but on tap it was very surprising and absolutely delicious.

A near perfect Munich Helles. Enjoy!
