Everything a lager should be. Crisp. Refreshing. Easy on the palate and adaptable to many different types of foods. Way more flavor and depth than any large scale macro american domestic. One of my favorites for the style. Ein prosit!

L: Clear, dark straw yellow with thin head that quickly dissipated into lacing. Light carbonation.
S: Skunk and grain.
T: Smooth, delicious grain with pleasant skunky hoppy goodness.
F: A little thinner than I like, but still very good.

Looks more or less like the other Munich pale lagers.
Smells rich and malty, with some spicy hops.
Taste is fuller with richer malts than Paulaner and Hofbrau, and is also somewhat more bitter than those two.
The best Munich helles lager easily, and cheaply, found in these parts.

This beer is very fresh judging by the date codes, maybe 6 weeks max from packaging.

I agree substantially with the last review except there is no way I would compare this to Budweiser, it is much better. It has good grainy values - no starch-like notes I associate with adjunct - and good mineral notes from the hops. Also, it has no DMS or similar smells like a lot of Euro lager has. It is on the dry and light side for helles but nothing wrong with that.

I am sure on draft unpasteurized it would be even better.

Purchased at the LCBO for just over $2.00 for a 500ml can. Served at 4deg C in a draught glass

A- Opens well and pours a tiny head that is gone in seconds. Light gold color and filtered clear

S- Not a lot of nose on this one. Some hops. Touch of malt

T- Pretty good blend. Light bodied and hoppy. Malt comes through as soon as the hops leave. These guys are good.

M- Pretty much a Bud but that is fine

O- Pretty good beer. In the pecking order this one comes in on a good level. Will choose this one over a Bud any day

Food Pairing

This nice little brew went well with..... Chinese stir fry. Lots of crispy veggies and oyster sauce.

Really bright, clear, somewhat goldenish color. Smell is the weak point for this because it had a very small hint of skunkiness (green bottle). Tastes very refreshing, and is incredibly smooth and easy to drink. I could seriously drink this stuff like water.

Not usually a seeker of German pale lagers, but when I have to drink one, it might as well be spaten, it's so light and clean, one could literally consume a dozen of these in an afternoon with little consequence. Blonde and bright, nice and fizzy, refreshing, and really clean in the finish. Enjoying the hops on it, more than others, and the yeast is an absolute classic, often found skunked out in the market because of the green glass, but when fresh, this really is an excellent lager, distinct from the others in its class I think, and pleasantly flavorful for what it is. Often the best beer available at non craft spots.

A: crystal clear; light gold colored; less than a one finger white head that receded quickly to a thin collar; little lacing;

S: sweet malt; grainy; a little skunky;

T: pilsner malt, cheerios; light hop flavor and low bitterness on the finish;

M: clean, crisp; medium bodied; moderate carbonation;

O: a little light struck, but still a really nice beer;

500ml Bottle from Reilly's (Lisnaskea - £1.79):
Quite a nice lager without really doing much to stand out from the crowd, being from Germany is almost enough to elevate it above most lagers you're likely to try in the UK but it is by no means a classic. It had enough going for it to keep you interested and the crisp finish was particularly pleasing but it's not a beer I'd go out of my way to track down again.

A: Bright clear golden yellow. Nice white head. Carbonation is high. Retention is on the poor side.

S: Grains. Pungent. Pepper and lemon. Crisp. Nice.

T/M: Bubbly and crisp. Grains and malts with some light herbal hops. The taste of grapes come in a little. The overall taste is a little on the clean side. The finish is dry with a linger of grains.

O: Very Good German Lager. I can taste the vintage recipe. Easy to drink, not a bad choice.

Golden honey clear looking beer with carbonation present throughout. light head fades to almost nothing.

Clean malty smell with a bit of grassy undertones.

Clean crisp slightly sweet taste with a bit of earthiness to it, but very clean easy to drink.

This beer feels light, but with great carbonation felt in your mouth, which leaves a really nice finish.

12 oz. bottle poured into pilsener

L: gold, clear, not much of a head but tons of bubbles in the column; with a super hard pour, the head reached about 1-inch of wispy white foam that evaporates quickly -- big soapy bubbles on top

S: some green/grassy hop notes with a bit of bread malt sweetness ... grain, sweet grain, sour grain; has a slight skunkiness but not too bad

T: mostly bread malt and water ... it really has a watered-down taste ... a pinch of hops but not overly bitter; the hops taste more like black pepper/earth than those greener hops in the nose

F: average ... again, a bit watery

O: far from terrible, far from great ... it's not a beer I'll buy again because we import so much better from the region, but it's also a serviceable helles with an interesting hop mix of grass in the nose and black pepper on the tongue

Review according to BJCP2008 guidelines (style 1D). Bottle 50 cl - Batch 17.02.2104. AROMA: sweet malt aroma with a slight background DMS. low hop aroma. APPEARANCE: yellow clear with a thin white head with average retention. TASTE: sweet taste that lingers into the finish. low bitterness and low hop flavour. no esters. PALATE: médium-light body, medium-low carbonation. OVERALL: an average bulk munich helles and the original style created at Spaten brewery.

12oz green bottle
L - golden colored body, precisely clear, with a creamy, white head that slowly fades to a foam
S - light struck, grass, biscuit, spicy noble hop
T - crisp and clean, impeccable balance, grassy spicy hops, biscuity grain, faint light struck hop taste
F - creamy and smooth, ample carbonation, finishes clean
O - slightly tainted by the green bottle light effect, but still very enjoyable.

Had as Spaten Premium Lager, 5.2 % alc.
Pours pale golden, small white head that goes fast to a thin sticky lace.
Tho a strong skunky smell at first, some nice grainy malts break through as it settles, a touch of fruit and some mild stewed hops.
Maltiness dominates the taste, grainy but also with a bit of sweetness, faint apple and lemon zest.
A bit of skunk, not too discomforting, grassy hop finish, a bit spicy, mild bitterness.
Light bodied, medium carbonation.
A decent lager, but doesn't really bring the German quality stamp.

500ml bottle. Pokal glass. Pale golden color, clear appearance. White froth, close but discrete crown leaves a thin lasting layer on top & some lacing on sides. Yeast, slight sulfur, floral, citric hints & biscuit touch to the nose. Malty upfront, light sweet & grainy flavor. High to medium body. Moderate to high carbonation. Oily to watery texture. Clean lemon zest-like bitterness & dried mouthfeel but maltiness –shown as a biscuit flavor- arises & balances a long gentle bitter finish. Lemon juice memories on the aftertaste.

Straw yellow in color with lots of brightness through its completely clear body, this beer develops a soft clean white head on top that peaks at just less than one finger. It holds up pretty well and manages sturdy patching that eventually drops to spotting but continues to cling pretty well.
Grains up front hold with a pale malt with a lemony tang that's balanced by some grass and herb hops notes.
A lightly sweet beer is kept in check by a dry/doughy biscuit malt, some green grape and red apple mostly. Lemon comes in to add another dimension with zest, and the hops are grassy and herbal as in the nose.
This beer is light, clean and refreshing all around. It has a strong carbonation that isn't allowed to get out of control even with a crispness that never stops biting; as such, it's fluffy in the mouth while biting. It has just a little dryness to balance the feel. It starts off grainy but ends clean.

Pours a deep clear gold with a fizzy white head. The head doesn't last long but does leave a small amount of lacing. The aroma is mild, with light notes of cut grass and grain. The taste is similar with the addition of light hops earthiness. The mouthfeel is toward the lighter side with a nice bite from the hops on the finish. A very good lager.

A: Golden filtered, almost no carbonation, 4 fingers of white head with merengue like chunky lacing.

S: Light and malty, some German hops, hay, fermenting hay.

T: Malty, smooth, hay, a little fermenting hay, little bitter hops but very subdued in the background. Light sweetness. A little green herb.

M: Medium bready body, very low carbonation.

O: I love this style, enjoying this Spaten version which is such a classic.

A very drinkable, enjoyable beer. Smells inviting, tastes fresh and has a number of different taste themes all working together. Finishes clean with no unpleasant aftertaste. It just seems right to me and I would be hard pressed to order something else if this was available.

Sometimes you just want a beer and you'd be hard pressed to find a better example of great lager than this. Smooth and creamy with just the right amount of crisp hops to finish it off. It's a shame that no big name American beer even resembles something this good.

Bought a case of 24 bottles in Wilbraham, MA.

A - Light gold tint with a frothy foamy head of two inches or so.

S - Beer.

T - It tastes like a lager through and through.

M - Crisp, and easy goin' down.

O - I think it's unfortunate that the irrational craze for ales (especially over-the-top IPAs) over the last few years has left the traditional lager woefully underappreciated. And yet the truth is that a good lager is mighty difficult to brew, much more so than an ale. Well, this is damn good lager: Refreshing and crisp yet simultaneously hearty. Great stuff - you see how the Germans drink this stuff by the liter at their beer halls.

Been drinking this one on and off for years. Thought for sure I had rated it. Nope!

A: Two fingers eggshell head. Retention is moderate. Golden straw in color. Vigorous carbonation. Excellent lacing in the glass. What macro lagers should look like.

S: Biting herbal hop presence. Lemony, bit of sulfur. Cracker like undertone of malt.

T: Good clean fun! There is nothing overly complex about this one. Herbal noble hoppiness. Same touch of sulphur. Lemon rind, slighty saltiness. Very cracker like malt. Finish is absolutely clean and dry. No lingering aftertaste of skunk like many Euro Pales have.

M: Light, easy to drink. Carbonation is prevalent but not overpowering like it has a tendency to be in so, so many light lagers.

O: Solid beer. Beach beer. Lawnmower beer. Summer beer. Enough flavor to keep ya happy while being a thirst quencher. I forgot how much I liked this one. Will be revisiting again.

This was very reminiscent of Heineken but skunkier. It's probably due to the duration of shipping. It's wasn't particularly great but I'll drink it if it's available. I wasn't too impressed though. I would like to try their other beers for sure.

This is one of my favorite beers. Very reminiscent of the beer I had at Oktoberfest in Munich (view my avatar)

Beer pours a light gold colour. Lots of carbonation.

Smell is little on the heavier side. Not offensive though.

Taste is what a beer should be. Strong, but not too strong. A little too much aftertaste for my liking, but I will deal with it.

As stated before, this beer has lots of carbonation. Goes down a little harsher then desired.

Overall I love this beer. So glad I had the chance to sample in the beer fests of all beer fests. Give this one a try. Does not disappoint.
