I really like this beer. First off, it's pretty. A pale gold in color with a typhoon of evenly distributed carbonation, swirling its way up to a massive foamy white head.
Second, it smells just like a pils ought to smell. A slightly sweet graininess dominates but is backed up by a tinge of herbal hop. Nice.
And finally, it's just lovely in the mouth. A bit of sweet malt at the start but the effervesence cuts this alot and leaves one with an overall very crisp mouthfeel. This impression is aided by what strikes me as a slightly lemony aspect of the hops at the finish. And then, just when I thought it was over, there's this really cool, slightly sweet cereal-like aftertaste. It tastes like Cheerios -- fer real.
My only complaint is the mouthfeel starts to get a tad bit sticky in the throat by the time you reach the end of the bottle. This isn't my favorite style, as it doesn't lend itself to a terrible amount of complexity. But Spaten does a damn fine job with it.
