Big malt & low hops
Perfect beer - for me. I love a malty taste and don't like hops much at all. Being aware that hops are all the rage right now, there aren't too many domestic beers I care for. Prior to late 2008, I thought Sam Adams Octoberfest was one of the best beers I ever tasted but in December of that year, my wife and I visited EPCOT's Germany. On tap, we were treated to Spaten Oktoberfest beer and our lives changed. A rich malty flavor with no hops bitter nastiness - pure bliss. Six months later, we made to the Yard House in Waikiki and had our first revisit with this beer. Our initial impressions were confirmed.
In late August in 2009, I had my first Sam Adams Octoberfest since trying the original. I no longer liked it as the hops aftertaste took over my palate. This was a defining moment as it perfectly demonstrated for me what I like and dislike about beer. I always stock up with 6 case in my beer cellar for the off-season and ration carefully.

Sampling right now on 4/13/14. Had this one many years ago on draught and it was great. Comes in a nice colorful 12 ounce bottle. Bottle chilled down to 36 degrees in my beer cooler and poured into a pilsner flute glass.
Pours a pretty darker amber in color with about a 1-finger of a off-white head. Lacing was seen with each sip. The aroma is of caramel malts with a hint of light citrus. The taste is of sweet malts, biscuit (yeast) with some spice. Very tasty and goes down easy. A very light dry finish is noted. Overall, really like this one and not a big fan of Oktoberfest brews for the most part but this one is the exception for sure.

Pours translucent amber with 1/2 inch of off-white head that fades to a thin cap on top and leaves nice spotty lace.
Smell is somewhat muted and consists of grainy malt, Autumn spices and faint citrus.
Taste is of grains and malt with accents of cinnamon, clove and nutmeg with faint tart citrus on the finish.
Texture is medium bodied with high carbonation.
A decent, if not remarkable, effort. Easy drinking and sessionable.
