"Franziskaner Weissbier Kristallklar Premium Weissbier."

50cl brown glass bottle with iconic label art acquired at a local Edeka supermarket here in Stuttgart and served into a .5L Weihenstephaner bierkrug in Stuttgart. Reviewed live. Expectations are extremely high given the brewery - for which I have great respect. Identifies itself as a weissbier and has "kristall" in the title, so given my poor German I'm reviewing as a kristalweizen. Best before 03/2015. 5.0% ABV. Regular pry-off pressure cap; branded.

Served chilled. Side-poured.

No bubble show forms as it's poured.

HEAD: 85% foam; this seems overcarbonated. Nine fingers in width. White coloured. Brilliantly frothy, with a nice smooth, even, healthy complexion. Looks refreshing and quenching as hell. Retention is excellent - easily over 10 minutes total. Leaves inconsistent yet appealing lacing on the sides of the glass as it recedes. Good consistency.

BODY: Translucent transparent pale yellow of average vibrance - definitely a kristalweizen. Clean-looking; no yeast particulate or hop sediment is visible. I'd like a stronger and perhaps darker colour with better vibrance, but this is to style I suppose.

It's not the fantastic appearance I've come to expect from Franziskaner's beers, but I'm optimistic. Certainly clean and filtered, but far from unique or special for the style.

AROMA: Soft flaked wheat, fresh clean barley, muted lemon zest/lemon peel, crystal malts, pilsner malts, a hint of orange zest, and some biscuity yeast character. Hop presence is minimal - to style. No alcohol or other off-notes are detectable.

Overall, it's a pleasant if lightly soapy aroma of average strength. I'm excited to try it, but I think that's just because of the brewery behind it.

TEXTURE: Smooth, wet, soft, refreshing, clean, perfectly carbonated, and light in body. Supple and quenching. Aptly thin; it's almost delicate on the palate. Has a great overall presence on the palate, is to style, and complements the flavour profile very well. Well-executed, undoubtedly.

Not oily, gushed, hot, boozy, rough, astringent, or harsh on the palate.

Its softness is a definite highlight, and emphasizes its overall refreshing feel.

TASTE: Hints of lemon zest and lemon peel play nicely along muted floral and lightly citrusy hop notes. At its core is an effective quenching blend of fresh clean barley and fresh flaked wheat. Light hints of pilsner malts, crystal malts, and perhaps even some munich malts fill out the flavour profile nicely. Good depth and duration of flavour. Average intensity of flavour for the style.

It's delightfully well balanced and has notable subtlety, but isn't a complex or intricate beer - but then a kristalweizen probably shouldn't be (though New Glarus does do quite an impressive one). I quite like it.

OVERALL: The softness of the texture and the light refreshing flavours make this a real winner - especially for summertime drinking. It's a damn good kristalweizen, and goes down effortlessly. I'd certainly get it again (especially at its excellent supermarket price point here in Germany) and I'd recommend it to friends. Consistent with the quality I've come to expect from Franziskaner. Definitely grab this one when in Germany.

That said, it's not a world class beer per se, and I have had better in the style. But for the price, I can't imagine doing any better than this.

500ml bottle. Weizen glass. Straw color & crystal clear appearance. Crown is white, thick, close & lasting. Fresh bread, banana, clove aromas, spiced notes & phenolic touch. Crispy upfront & gentle creamy malty flavor. Medium to full body. Moderate carbonation. Oily to watery texture. Fresh bready hues in the middle & low herbal bitterness with spicy touch. Slight fruit & phenolic flavor arise to provide a sweet/malty finish with low acidity. Nice spot of the Style.

Franziskaner Weissbier Kristallkalr, Premium Weissbier. Nach Alter Brau Tradition. Alc. 5.0% by Vol.

Big, allowing chalk white head, tremendous lacing, with clear, golden coloring.

Aroma: ah, beautiful, fresh, lively, sweet, wheat-y aromatics. Lemon and lime zest, floral notes, lightly spicy. Just gorgeous.

Taste: more citrus notes, wheat-y texture. It's crisp, clean, and refreshing. Slides down seriously smoothly. But I know what I'm missing. Kristallweisses are fine and dandy, but I want the yeast. I want to see the cloudy look, and I want it to be in the flavor, as well.
