A: The Franziskaner pours a dark chestnut; not the darkest Dunkelweizen out there but getting there. A generous mocha head topped the beer.
S: Like virtually all Dunkelweizens, the Franziskaner is heavy on the clove, with just a hint of chocolate; very minimal banana aroma.
T: My first sip of the Franziskaner came closest to what I imagine a Dunkelweizen should taste like. It was sweet up front but not cloyingly so. It had a characteristic bready wheat flavor, with a very slight yeasty tartness to it, but there was also a subtle caramel and cocoa profile in the background. While there was virtually no banana aroma, I picked up a slightly astringent flavor of banana peel in the finish. Overall it was a very flavorful but drinkable beer that had more depth than your standard Hefe but absolutely no roasty bitterness that is the bane of casual beer drinkers who won't drink dark brews.
M: Quite carbonated, as the style calls for.
D: Very drinkable... a great transition beer from the wheat beers of summer to the dark beers of winter.
Overall: An excellent example of the style that's generally easy to find and affordable; you can't really do wrong with that.

500ml bottle. Hoepfner Weizen glass. Deep amber color. Foggy appearance. Beige foam remains as a close & thin crown. Intense aromas of banana, toasted malt & bread, hints of clove & floral notes rounded by caramel on the back. Toasted upfront. Medium body. Moderate carbonation. Watery texture. Gentle malts, bread notes & brown sugar touch balanced by low bitterness. Fruity finish. Refreshing & easy drinkable.
