500 ml bottle into weizen glass, bottled on 12/10/2012. Pours very hazy reddish brown color with a 1-2 finger dense off white head with good retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Spotty soapy lacing clings on the glass, with a moderate amount of streaming carbonation. Aromas of caramel, toast, toffee, brown bread, brown sugar, light roast, banana, pear, apple, pepper, clove, herbal, and yeast earthiness. Very nice aromas with good balance and complexity of dark malt and fruity/spicy yeast ester notes; with good strength. Taste of caramel, toast, toffee, brown bread, brown sugar, light roast, banana, pear, apple, light clove, herbal, and yeast earthiness. Lingering notes of caramel, toast, toffee, brown bread, brown sugar, pear, apple, banana, light clove, herbal, and yeast earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Nice balance and complexity of dark/bready malt and moderate fruity yeast ester flavors; with good robustness and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Medium carbonation and body; with a smooth, moderately creamy, and lightly bready mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is well hidden with minimal warming present after the finish. Overall this is a very good dunkelweizen style. Good balance and robustness of dark malt and fruity yeast flavors; and very smooth to drink. A nicely enjoyable offering.

500ml bottle. Hoepfner Weizen glass. Deep amber color. Foggy appearance. Beige foam remains as a close & thin crown. Intense aromas of banana, toasted malt & bread, hints of clove & floral notes rounded by caramel on the back. Toasted upfront. Medium body. Moderate carbonation. Watery texture. Gentle malts, bread notes & brown sugar touch balanced by low bitterness. Fruity finish. Refreshing & easy drinkable.

Poured from a bottle into a pint glass.

Appearance: Brown with about one finger of off-white head. No lacing on the glass.

Smell: Banana, cloves, wheat/grass.

Mouthfeel/Taste: Smooth medium bodied. Taste of cloves, banana, grassy notes and some mild hops and citrus.

Overall: Great brew, I would have this one again.

Poured from the bottle into a stein.

A- huge chewy and frothy head... forms into a plateau... cloudy, muddy brown with billowing carbonation... Hues of golden wheat...

S- toffee, apple caramel, sweet malt, thick, pungent, buttery aroma...

T- A bit metallic initially, sweet malt, wheat, caramel apple, fresh bread, earthy spiciness, yeasty...

M- highly carbonated mouthfeel, effervescent, a bit of a tingling sensation on the back of the tongue...

Overall, good but featuring a few offtastes and an intense mouthfeel... I'd need to try it in Germany to compare.

Head fades quickly with no lacing. Hazy deep brown.

Nice odor but hard to place (alcohol).

Smooth malty-fullness, definitely heavier than a hefe.

Nice flavor with hint of banana. No hint at all of a metallic aftertaste. Noticeably heavier than a hefe, but clearly related.

Tried this one a few times in the past, always by bottle. Last sampled tonight on 12/29/13. 550ml (16.9 oz) bottle chilled down to 36 degrees F in my beer cooler and poured into a pilsner glass.

Pours a hazy dark brown, like ice tea that has a good finger+ white foamy head. Lots of lacing was seen right to the end with each sip. The aroma is of dark bread with a hint of cloves and banana. Very pleasant. The taste was even better with a hint of dark fruit as well. Very easy to drink with perfect carbonation. Goes down easy with no bitter or harsh aftertaste at all. This is a really great brew for the colder months and never have been disappointed.

Poured into a weizen glass.

A-Cloudy dark brown with some tan highlights; fluffy tan 2-finger head, good retention. Once the head dissipated, there was a creamy tan surface that stuck around throughout consumption. Trace sticky lace on the glass.

S-A bit of cloves, hint of malt, some yeast, dark bread, and perhaps a slight estery smell, but ever so slight.

T-Upon the first sip there was dark bread, banana nut bread, chunky yeast, slight spice, caramel malt, and a hint of dark fruit. The aftertaste had a balance of light hops, sweet malt, light wheat, and a trace of caramel. The flavor blends were so nice and balanced.

M-Quite refreshing for this style. The body is on the moderate side. Carbonation was present, but just enough to give this fine brew some balance.

Overall, I was amazed. It really fit the context I was in at the time of drinking it. I really would drink this again, and again, and again. Perhaps this beer tasted so good because I had just finished cross-country skiing in -15 (Celsius) weather in Northeast China with a group of German and Swedish diehard ski bums. We went to one of the few German pub/restaurants in N.E. China right when we finished skiing. This brew really complemented my borsch, warm pretzel bread, sour cucumber cabbage salad, potatoes, and marinated beef. Quite a hearty meal on a frigid day. Give this beer a try if you haven't yet.

look: 3.5 | smell: 3.5 | taste: 3.5 | feel: 3 | overall: 3.5

Appearance 3.5: Poured out a deep, dark black with brown highlights around the edges. White and fizzy CO2 head never really established anything. Nonetheless, a good-looking beer.

Smell 3.50: Nice bouquet. I smell hints of banana and some very light maltiness. Also some interesting elements of the yeast are present in the bouquet.

Taste 3.50: Front is very light and dry. Almost watery. Middle is dry and there is a nice taste of noble hops and caramel malts. Finish is where a slight toasted flavor comes in along with more of the barley malt and some hints of the banana from the bouquet along with some spicy clove hints. Aftertaste is short and somewhat watery with the focus being on the malt once again.

Mouthfeel 3.0: Standard. Okay. Nothing special and obviously CO2.

Overall 3.5: Good beer, but nothing special. This beer is strange: watery and weak in places and assertive and complex in others. I imagine it would be good with food, maybe a nice plate of haxen. Not the best for sessioning, as the aftertaste is a bit off, in my opinion. Not a horrible beer by any means, but certainly not the best you will ever imbibe.

Had this from a bottle poured into a pint glass. Color is brown/reddish. You get a lot of clove and banana in the smell. Taste is a lot like the smell, but has a caramel kick to it. This is my first Dunkelweizen and I'm pretty impressed. I am a big fan of Hefe's, so I wanted to try a Hefe that was a little darker. Really like this beer. The caramel kick it has is a fantastic twist to the beer. I recommend it.

16.9 oz bottle was poured into a large tulip glass.

Appearance: This beer poured a two finger off white head that reduced to a thin layer. It is a murky brown with no clarity. Tiny bubbles can be seen coming up the edge of the glass.

Smell: Banana, clove, spices, bready wheat, and fruity aroma.

Taste: Delicious and tasty beer. Banana, clove, ginger, wheat, and sweet malts.

Mouthfeel: Smooth, a little chewy, feels light, and low to medium carbonation.

Overall: Pretty solid beer. Delicious and tasty.

Appearance - Nice coppery caramel brown with a nice thick foamy head. Manly looking. Lace ok but head dissipates quickly.

Taste- Nice weissbier wheatiness with some banana smoothness and some spicy something or other. Good almost great but not out of this world.

Overall- Very solid Dunkel Hefe.

Served from a bottle into a tulip glass...

A: Poured a nice, hazy brown/amber with about 2 fingers of light brown head that dropped off to some nice lacing around the glass.

S: On the nose, hints of yeast, wheat, sweetness and maybe a little funk in there. Not nearly the overall nose I was thinking I'd find

T: On first taste, the wheat, banana, a little bready note and some spice.

M: Medium body, nice carbonation. Light/dry finish with no real aftertaste.

O: Not a bad beer overall. There may be better ones out there so I guess I'll have to drink more of this style to find out.

Cheers!

Half-litre bottle, slightly out of date when poured into a Franziskaner Weissbier glass at home on 20 Oct 2013.

Huge head on top of the dark brown body with ruby hints: looked lovely.

The nose is a mixture of yeast, vanilla and banana esters: the taste follows closely but with a malt presence that didn't appear in the aroma.

Lively and flavoursome, very pleasant and one of the best Dunkelweizen I've had so far.

Appearance:
Deep, dark brown body - borderline black. An off-white head withers away in short order, leaving just a thin crown behind. Lacing is minimal and carbonation is light.

Aroma:
Cavity-inducing sweetness upfront. Plenty of banana and clove and caramel notes. Pretty basic but enjoyable.

Taste:
Everything the nose picks up, the taste buds do as well - with added spice. Fresh banana nut bread and Belgian yeast with some lightly roasted caramel. Coriander and a bit of ground pepper add some character and unfortunately, I'm not a fan of the execution.

Mouthfeel:
Medium bodied and medium carbonation. Sweet with a nice finish. Easy to drink, even if the spicing starts to wear you thin.

Overall:
Not a bad beer by any means, however, I found myself looking forward to the end of the glass as time went on. More enjoyable to smell than sip.

I lived in Germany for 13 years, (Army Brat) and used to drink Dunkel Hefeweizen, all the time. I don't remember the brand, but... this is the closest I've have gotten since I've been back to the US.

I'm not a beer connoisseur, but I have tried a lot. This ones top notch. If your looking for a authentic German tasting Dark wheat beer... look no further.

I don't always drink beer but when I do I drink Hefeweizen. (Dunkel where I can get it.) :P

Poured from a 500 ml bottle into a standard weizen.

A: Dark, hazy, amber hue. Pours a cascading, foamy head. Settles slowly, but never completely. Leaves a thick foam blanket throughout the experience. No real lacing.

S: Wheat, yeast, and what smells like a little molasses and raisin.

T: Wheat..of course... kind of a woody malt accentuated with a shallow sweetness of molasses, and a very slight bitterness of raisin.

M: Light but hearty. Has a sort of overly carbonated feel. Light and indistinct aftertaste.

D: Great drinking brew. Goes down easy.

Atmosphere is pretty good. Hazy and amber with a giant head, but no real lacing. Nose is wheaty with some sweet and bittersweet accentuates. Woody wheat, with a little molasses and raisin. Feels a little shallow. Overall, this is a really good quaff.

I usually order a hefeweizen with a meal in Germany and this dark hefe was a treat. I really enjoyed the complex taste and aroma of this beer. It has a nice balance of malts that leave a nice smooth almost chocolate aftertaste. I prefer dark hefe if they are not too bitter and this one is really nice. It is a touch sweet though.

Appearance: This pours a cloudy, dark brown color. It has an off-white puffy head that’s about two fingers thick. It has a slight lacing but it disappears quickly.

Smell: This has a slight banana smell to it. I also get a light hint of caramel.

Taste: The taste is similar to the smell. I definitely taste the banana. Along with that, I’m getting a nice nutty and bready taste to it.

Mouthfeel: It feels good. Smooth taste with a light to medium body and sharp carbonation. Maybe a little too much; But it’s still good.

Overall: Overall, this was a good beer. Definitely what I expected from a wheat beer.
But with more of a banana feel to it. And it leaves a nice smooth wheat aftertaste.

Pours a cloudy nut brown, nearly-white head is a quarter inch, dissipates to a lacing.

Smells of bananas and buttered bread.

Tastes of bananas and lightly buttered bread along with light caramel and mild roasty notes.

Medium body with tingly carbonation on the roof of the mouth.

A pretty good wheat ale in the German style, good nose, okay flavor. Their hefe is one of the best, but this is just pretty good. Still worth trying though, and enjoyable enough that I would have it again.
