Optimator opens with a full, malty nose, rich with yeasty, unrisen bread dough made with carbonated lemon/lime soda, floury wheat crusts, and healthy doses of brown sugars. Subtle hints of vanilla and fig juice linger in the background. Overall, the nose is well-balanced and quite enticing, promising a good dose of sugars, mixed with earthy breads and touches of caramel.

On the tongue, the beer is just as malty as the nose implied, rich with brown sugar and fig juice, threaded with vanilla, molasses, and caramel, all atop a fine grain layer of Grape Nuts cereal, floury Artisinal French baguette crusts, and just a touch of lemon/lime/pink grapefruit citrus from the hops to balance the sugars. The aftertaste is a slightly more hoppy version of the main mouthful, most of the sugars having died off, and lingers for a decent amount of time. Mouthfeel is medium, and carbonation is medium.

Overall, this is quite good beer, and at 7.6% ABV, decently alcoholic, but the alcohol well hidden by the sugary malts. The beer is well-balanced in the sugars, and while it does lack a distinctive hop quality, this is more than made up for by an excellent and varied grain selection. Well worth trying.

Poured into a beer mug.

A: Pours a dark brown color that turns ruby red when put up to the light. The head is a three-finger light mocha color with mediocre retention/lacing.

S: Honestly, it smells a little skunky. There is a bit of maltiness and hop character, but the skunk (sadly) wins out. Seriously, brewers, STOP USING GREEN BOTTLES!

T: Thankfully, not nearly as skunky as the nose. Opens up with flavors of toffee, molasses, and roasty malts, but finishes a zesty hop bite. There's the faintest hint of booze on both the back end and going down the throat, but it's well hidden otherwise. Not an easy beer to drink, but decently flavorful.

M: The carbonation starts off intense, but fades rather quickly. I'm only halfway through the beer and it's already (nearly) flat. In addition, while it's decently thick, it isn't creamy enough to counteract the fading carbonation. Otherwise, it isn't bad at all on the palate.

O: I'm a bit conflicted on this one. I like the way it tastes, but I don't like the skunk profile I get on the nose. Eh, what the hell, give it a shot, it's decently priced for a rather big beer. This is a style I'll need to get a better grip on in the future to see if it's really up my alley.

A: Pours a dark, reddish amber color with a decent white-head

S: Lots of malt and yeast. Smells fairly sweet similar to dried fruit but not nearly as pungent

T: Sweet initial malt flavor, finishes with a smooth hoppy taste. The yeast is detectable in the finish but not overwhelming. With bigger drinks you will taste a little bit of the alcohol; however, it well balanced.

M: Not overly carbonated, but in this case that is a good thing. The carbonation suits the beer in this case.

Overall: Not world class by any means, but Optimator is a great beer. If you're a fan of the style, give it a try. If not go ahead and try it anyway. I would say that it is much better on tap (what beer isnt) but still excellent out of the bottle.
