Exiled to Kingston, NY for a 2 week work stint, what do you do? You comb beerfly to see what's in the 'hood.
Met an old boss there for drinx last week. They've got a long rectangular bar that seems confined but it's because there's a brewing set up above the bar on a platformed area. Someone was climbing the ladder at the end of the bar to get up there as we sat there. Most curious. There's a separate dining room in the back and you can see the brewing equipment in a side room as you enter. Off the bar, there's an area where they have bands set up. The decor is mostly old brewery beer trays on the walls and a large collection of old beer cans lines the trim above the bar as well as stacked here and there. They have 4 full time beers there. The SOB (Special Old Bitter) was very nice, and the Rough Rider Red Lager was pretty good too with a nice malty presence. They also have a Barre 9 Brewer's Choice beer which rotates in (this one was a Pale Bitter Ale which wasn't too bad). And then they have a rotation of three dark beers, a porter, a stout, and a Schwarzbier. The one they had in rotation when we were there was the Von Schtupp's Black Lager (the Schwarzbier) which was absolutely wonderful). I drank that all night (like a viking!!!).
Didn't get to the food menu beyond having a giant pretzel although my buddy says they make great salads. Would love to get back there when they've got the stout or porter on.

This place is convienently located on northbound Route 9. It has a decent size bar of about 20 stools, and other high top tables surround the area. A small stage is in the corner for weekend entertainment. I did not look into the restaurant area, but it does exists if you prefer a table.

There are usually about 6 beers on tap (Easy Blonde, Winkle Lager, Rough Rider Red Lager, S.O.B bitter, and a special brew or two), but with my luck, I arrived at noon time on a Saturday and they were out of everything except the blonde, pale lager, and red lager. Before I left a seasonal Santa Lager became available, but the Mary P's Porter I was waiting for did not.The beers are good and enjoyable.

The food was also good, as the fish and chips and appetizers we had were tasty. The service was pleasant and knowledgable about the beers. Nice place to watch sports and enjoy a few pints.

When asked how I have tried a large variety of beer, I joke that it often just magically "appears" on trips (after researching several websites). In this case, Hyde Park Brewing did simply appear across the street from the home of FDR. After a morning of tours and contemplation of the New Deal, we headed to Hyde Park Brewing for lunch before heading over to Val Kill down the road.

Very nice stop on a Sunday morning for a brunch menu. Ended up having the pizza, which was a bit better than good. Six beers on tap, more or less German inspired mostly. All were solid beers, clean and well done--no flaws in the lagering. The Von Schtupp's Black Lager was smooth with enough depth in the taste to make it interesting.

Not sure how far out of my way I'd go for Hyde Park Brewing, but it was a great no-brainer stop while visiting a very beautiful and historic area.

I guess I expected a brewery right across from a former U.S. president's home to have some stiff conservative air, but Hyde Park was nothing like that. I was in on a sunny afternoon, and while the TV was tuned to something "true crime" in nature, there was a light happy atmosphere in the few patrons and the servers alike. I sat alone at the central rectangular bar, and was treated very pleasantly.

I was driving that day, so I confined myself to the Chaos Stout, which was a fine example of the style, with no off notes. I ate a Greek Salad that was fine, but you cannot judge a brewpub's food on one salad. I also picked up one of the jewels of my glassware collection, a mug with a glass etching of Roosevelt's profile. I like when we can associate beer with everyday history.

There's lots of pretty country just to the east of Hyde Park... I definitely look forward to getting back there on my way through.

Located on the east side of Route 9 in historic Hyde Park, NY. The building appears to be a converted country home of some sort, perhaps dating back to the mid 19th Century.

Upon pulling into the parking lot I was met with the unmistakable odor of raw sewage. Not a good start.

The bar is located to the left upon entering and the very casual looking dining room to the right rear. The bar area was large with a two sided long bar. Plenty of TVs as well.

There were about 6 house beers on tap and a seasonal that was admittedly a mix of two other beers literally done by the bartender at the tap.

The beers were generally shallow and lacking in flavor and body. Very little to no head. With the exception of the pils, all were pretty lackluster.

Would not repeat unless I was in the area and a high gravity seasonal beer was offered.

Shiredave pretty much said it all in his review. Except that I really enjoy the Winkle Lager alot. So much so I don't see the point in tying any of their other beer . Its a crisp refreshing German style lager that tastes as fresh as the lagers you get in Germany. Next time I go, I am going to bring my liter mass krug and see if they will fill it for me. Drinking a lager this good from a pint glass just doesn't seem right.

Don't let the outside fool you. What looks like a funeral home or an old folks home is the home to some very nice beers. I love the fact that they retrofitted an existing building with brewing equipment and it is working. THe brewery is visible, the walls do carry some breweriana. There are TVS, big ones if you are in to that. A seperate diing room leads you to believe you could be someplace else. A nice effort and a very historic town. I would definitely return with or without family, it is that comfortable.

Last place on a stop from a recent trip. I have been to the place in the past, and the beers seem relatively consistant overall.

Anyway, neat bar area with seating on all sides and the brewing equipment overhead. Boob Toobs are around as well as some games.

Beers are clean and easy drinking. I wouldn't expect anything too assertive here, but German lagers are rare and they have a couple of decent ones. Excellent pils.

Barkeeps have always been friendly and attentive.

I like the selection with 8 taps, and having 4 ales and 4 lagers when I was there last. I don't know if they usually keep this many on at all times though.

You would expect the food to be good, being across from CIA. Did not have much this trip, but what we did have was good: A spinach dip and some Chili and French Onion Soup. In the past I have had excellent meals here though.

Woth the visit, and only a short ride from Half Time...
