A big thanks to Ken for this sample from Shiner. Poured vertically into a nonic pint glass from a 12oz bottle.
Pale amber in color, with some golden streaks within the glass. Slightly cloudy, as a witbier should be, with some minor gentle carbonation throughout. A frothy white creamy head coats the top of the glass and lasts a good long while throughout consumption. Looks as good as any witbier should be.
The aroma displays instant notes of citrus and bready characteristics, but doesn't really offer anything new to the style, either. Orange peel, coriander, lemon zest, some white pepper, and then a brief crackly wheat bready flavor with notes of toffee and caramel, and maybe a little bit of vanilla. Don't think it's too complex, however - as soon as the wheat flavor disappears there's nothing more than a faded herbal and citrus flavor that lingers about. A good definition of the style, but quite simplistic.
Tastes slightly better - definitely refreshing and embodies what the average, expectative witbier tends to offer. Sharp zest from the coriander and lemon peel, with faded orange notes, as well as a slightly spicy, crisp wheat flavor at the finish. The aftertaste is loaded with grainy notes and sweet flavors of toffee and light vanilla, as well as a sugar cream. The flavors are rather nice, but the texture needed some pruning to back them up - it turns out to be rather thinned, slightly watery, and with a dulled grainy characteristic that does nothing for the citrus notes that continue to rise in power the more that this warms up. Definitely not bad, but nothing that's worth raving about too much.
Witbiers are never usually my favorite, but this at least is a decent take on the style, and on par with Lost Coast's Great White beer - inoffensive, simple, and does the trick if all there's only a bunch of adjunct lagers otherwise laying around. I do wish the body were thicker to accentuate the playful wheat notes, but it's definitely a decent option for those looking for a simple beer to sip on during the lazy, warmer days of the year.

One of Shiner's summer beers, all of which are pretty good and welcome given how friggin' hot it is of late.
Pretty true to style and quite tasty. Would be just fine with a wedge of lemon or orange. Thirst quenching and easy to drink.

One of my favorites of the big brewers. Sure, it's monster-massed produced, but I can get over that.
