Shiner Bock in the 100 year anniversary bottle. No freshness date that I could find. Nice label.

Upon pouring you get a white head that dissipates quickly, practically no lacing left on the glass as you drink it down. The color is a nice orange-brown when held up to the light.

Smell is good, almost all malt to my nose but tasty. Maybe something a tad metallic at the end?

Taste....maybe I'm a tad disappointed because the last time I had this I liked it better. You get some malt and something a little bitter and then...not a lot. However it goes very well with a meal in that you get some flavor with washing down the flavors of the dish.

Mouthfeel - nothing special. Well carbonated.

Drinkability - this beer in my opinion goes well with a meal or a snack, and maybe by itself on a hot day (although I think Shiner Kolsch, now discontinued, was king in that category) but I think alone it can't stand. It's very weak for a bock, but it's still a good beer. I like Shiner's line-up and the first time I had this long ago it was quickly one of my favorites. Now with time either my taste buds have changed and I'm moving onto new flavors or the brew has changed a tad. I'm thinking the former. Still, well worth having from time to time with a good meal where you don't want the beer drowning out the flavors of the food.

Brand new beer tonight. Picked up from Wally World. $7.28/6-pack. Lets see if this Bock rocks.

Appearance - in 12 oz glass bottle.

Smell - caramel rolls, a juicy bloody steak (yep?), buttered vegetables. It could be a full course meal plus dessert. Oh and the usual light floral hoppiness. Oh! And its got that Rolling Rock thing going on... the sour ale smell. There's a lot to talk about here.

Taste - refreshing with character and the right balance of hops and bitters. Tasty. Metallic finish. Tastes almost nothing like it smells though.

Mouthfeel - crisp and refreshing. Flows like a river. Reminds me of Coors' mouthfeel, just a little more full-bodied. I could go without the metallic aftertaste though. Does melt pleasantly syrupy after the wash is gone.

Overall - it's got a good thing going. I don't know if I would pay the $7.28 for a sixer again unless I really got a craving for it. This beer is pleasant to drink however and is definitely worth a try.

12oz beer poured into a shaker pint.

A: Deep amber color with shades of brown. Great clarity. Fine bubbled off white head retains for a bit before falling. No real lacing.

S: Lots of malty sweetness and dextrins. Malt syrup, somewhat bready. Grassy and herbal hops. clean.

T: Much the same in taste. Loads of malty sweetness. Treacle syrup. Pinch of cocoa. Sweet bready flavors. Clean. Hops bite in with a lot of herbal spic on the back ends it's much needed to balance the tide of sweetness. Sweet malt and clamping spicy hops in the finish.

M: Sturdy medium body. Somewhat syrupy and coating feel. Fine scrubbing carbonation lifts it just enough to keep the syrupy texture from becoming off-putting.

O: Quite a bit darker and more hefty than I thought. The hops and the carbonation really have to fight to keep it from becoming cloying and syrupy. A decent beer at best. At its price point I don't think it will compete well here in MA. Interesting decision to enter such a saturated market, especially riding right on the coattails of Yuengling.
