12 oz bottle served in a snifter.

A - apricot-gold in color, like apple juice, with a short-lived small head. Some sediment at the bottom of the bottle.

S - The nose is a rather with a quality more like an adjunct lagr than, say, a typical German Hefeweizen or replica thereof, such as the Baltika 8 that followed this beer. 2.75

T: Despite the claim to be a Hefeweizen, this is like a cross of that style with an Amer. lager. 2.75

M - Medium-light body; Somewhat low carbonation.

O - Not bad, certainly, but not true to style (o deduction for that in this review) and rather bland and low in flavor.

Another great product from shiner, very smooth finish and refreshing crisp finish. Best served cold and by following the serving directions on the back, this insures you get the best flavor through whole finish of the beer. I would recommend this to anyone who enjoys lighter beers with a more citrus flavor.

My first beer review but wanted to review this craft beer.

I poured it into a pub style glass. I made sure to mix the yeast in as recommended for serving.

The appearance was cloudy, which is intended because of the yeast, but quite pleasant. Had a somewhat soft yellow color.

For what ever reason - maybe its because I swirled the beer in the bottle so much trying to get the yeast off the bottom- it had a fairly stout head in the pub glass. It was bubbly and white, but took a couple minutes to go down before I could pour more beer in without head spilling down the sides of the glass.

Nose was there, but not too pungent. The smell of the citrus was present and the clover honey lingered nonchalantly in the background.

Taste was decent. Citrusy, slighty sweet and smooth. The smoothness goes as well for the mouth feel.

All in all a fairly decent craft beer to relax with at the end of a hot day.

my 1st review. poured bottle into a weizen glass, rich golden color that appeared somewhat cloudy, with an unfiltered look. decent head that went away quickly, with some lacing leftover. smelled like a dark lager, with moderate carbonation. had a strange but short-lived aftertaste that i could best describe as artificial banana-vanilla-orange. got a little better as i went along.

A- Bottle to mug, cloudy and yellow, 1" head that leaves quick, does leave some lacing.

S- Bready, citrus, not bad.

T- Citrus, slightly bitter.

M- Medium to heavy, moderate carbonation.

O- Got this in a reunion sixer, review is from my notes. I do like this style of beer, not a bad offering from Shiner.

Pours cloudy and yellow with a white head. I can smell the wheat with a hint of citrus. It's not a strong smell. The there's a decent amount of citrus flavor, but it's not overpouring. There isn't much hops flavor. There's the taste of grain and malt. The aftertaste is a bit strange and I can't place it. The mouthfeel is light to medium and the carbonation isn't overbearing. I've had this before and I'm still not impressed by it.

The beer is one of the darkest hefeweizens I have ever seen. It pours with almost no head or lace and the aroma is of orange peels and earthy spices. The beer tastes too fruity to be an effective beer. The dark amber color throws it off a bit as a heffy should be pale. The beer is very heavy and when held to a light, you can see chunks of something floating in it. Not a bad beer, but not one I'd buy a 6 pack of either. Got this one in a Shiner variety pack.

A: Unfiltered orange-tan.

S: Wheat body, grains, lemon, orange.

T: Classic wheat body, more malty that hopy, lemon/lime/orange twist in the finish.

M: Unfiltered roughness, gritty yet creamy.

O: Good beer for warm weather for sure. No need to add a slice of orange, there's plenty in the taste right out of the bottle.

Poured into a stange glass.

Body is cloudy yellow under a white head that is huge initially but has little staying power.

Smells of generic lager actually. A little hop aroma of the noble variety and some pale singular malts make up the majority of the nose. A little foam as well.

Strange tastes greet me in my first sip. Some synthetic fruit flavors paired with warm-grown yeast come to mind. Maybe a little metallic hoppiness as well. The only expected flavor is a little grain in the aftertaste. Otherwise this is an odd wheat beer.

The mouthfeel is prickly, carbonated, and rather thin.

Conclusion: Not a tasty example. Maybe the food I am pairing it with has changed the flavor (doubt it) or I have a bad bottle. Who knows.

Poured from 12oz bottle into SABL perfect pint.

A. Pours a 2 fingers fairly thick head. Color is a hazy golden yellow. Good retention, comes mostly from the glass. Pretty thick lacing.

S. Yeast, and citrus. A bit lemony and maybe if I try hard can pick up some of the orange that is on the label. Pretty traditional hefeweizen smell. A little funk and a touch of honey.

T. Get a little more honey on the tongue. Dryer malt base with just a touch of sweetness. Lemony citrusy aftertaste. Slight off taste that is kinda hard to pin down.

M. Medium/light bodied. Medium carbonation.

O. Definitely not the best hefeweizen by any stretch of the imagination, but a decent beer. Mildly refreshing except for the strange aftertaste that I can't really describe.

Poured this Hefeweizen (American) from a 12 oz bottle into a pint glass. It poured a hazy yellow colored brew, produced a nice white head, retention was below average and it produced some rings of lace on the glass. The aroma is very nice, smells of bread, soft wheat, and lemon peels. Medium body, very smooth and crisp. Great mouthfeel. A nice base of malted grain and wheat, flavors of traditional Hefe yeast, sweet lemon citrus flavor that is balanced with a touch of honey. Off the charts session beer, excellent summer beer, one of my new favorite American brewed Hefe's. Prost!

A: This pours an above average cloudy orange with a thick white head that quickly fades. As the beer fades, it leaves a very tiny bit of lace on the glass.

S: A little bit of fruity sweetness and a decent amount of malt on the nose. Not really much else.

T: A lot of malt and a bit of fruity sweetness. This is not a very good tasting beer.

M: With your typical Shiner beer, you have to have a crap load of foam. There is a bit of crispness on the back of throat and the mouth too.

O: Don't buy this if you like good beer. It just is not enjoyable and leaves a lot to be desired for.

Yellow and hazy, soft white head about 3/4" in height. Aroma was grainy, wheat, grist full. Spotty hop existence, slight citrus in a light floral way, mild grapefruit and lemon.

Taste, chalky, dry, gritty, bready, lemon, slightly tart. A little bit of clove, thankfully this beer didn't overdo it. Completely a middle of the road beer, something I wouldn't recommend unless this is totally your favorite brewery/style or you need some beers that are mild to have less adventurous/geeky people over to drink at your place.

appearance - surprisingly very very good. Yellow cloudy wheat appearnce with a very well formed 2 finger head that has great retention and high carbonation through beer

smell - good malt and bread presence with some lemon and slight bananna

taste - very strange and surprising flavors up front with a sour/metallic tinge. Something tastes a litle off with the water but not that bad, just takes an adjustment of what to expect. Wheaty and crisp aftertaste.

Mouthfeel - full bodied and pleasant

Overall - Not really a great example of a Hef. but it is ok and interestingly different from others

Tasted last year - reviewed from notes that were lost, but recently found:

Poured into weizen glass -

Pours clouded golden yellow with an ample white head. Some patchy lacing sticks.

The smell is bready with clove and a hint of honey.

The taste is bready with some dry, tang spicing from cloves and orange and lemon peels. It has a slight honey sweetness. It finishes semi-dry.

This is a refreshing brew that is more of a spiced American wheat than a traditional Hefeweizen, in my opinion. (I didn't follow the suggestion of having it with a lemon wedge.) Overall, it's a nice wheat ale!

Shiner Hefeweizen

C: 3.5 Light pale yellow color. A bit hazy with visible rising carbonation. Pours with about an inch of white head, which lingers for a minute or two and leaves behind moderate amount of lacing.

S: 3.0 Wheat. Light citrus scent. Grassy/mossy scent.

T: 2.5 There is no malty taste. No citrus taste. The wheat is there and there is a light bitter finish. Overall, there's not much here to evaluate.

M: 3.0 The beer is light, but not watery. It's got a refreshing feel to it.

OVERALL: 2.5 It's easy to drink, but there isn't any depth or character to make me want to drink it again. It's about the same as a Blue Moon.

Poured from a 12oz bottle into a wiezen glass.

Appearance is a hazy medium orange with a fairly thick fizzy head. Pretty good retention.

The nose is lemon and orange with a fairly heavy sour note.

Taste has the same lemon and orange as the nose although not as heavy as I would have liked. There is a slight yeasty tartness that is present but just faintly. Some very light bitterness at the finish.

Overall this beer is just ok. I used to really like it but now it just seems watered down. Mouthfeel is fairly decent though. Probably not one I will revisit.

A. Appears a slightly hazed / golden yellow in color with a tiny amount of skim on top with no lacing left behind at all.

S. I am surprised by the presence of a distinct Berliner Weiss-like lemoney lactic sour tone in the nose, with wheat, lemon, and spice scents all playing second fiddle to this. It would be a really nice understated Berliner Weiss (if only it had been marketed as such), unfortunately I have to judge it as a Hefeweizen and it just plain flat out doesn't match up to style.

T. Same problem as the nose. Enough psuedo-lactic sourness is present to firmly plant this as a Berliner Weiss. No banana scent or flavor is present, cloves are present but at too low a level for a proper Hefe.. I have to take points off because the style on the label simply doesn't match the beer inside the bottle.

M. Medium thick, appropriately carbonated, no real surpises positive or negative present themselves to me here.

Overall, this is one of the most severe cases of "oops, we put the wrong style on the label" I have ever tasted.

A- Cloudy dark yellow with a hint of orange. The head is fluffy and last most of the way down. It also laces nicely.

S- The aroma is kind of bland with a light dry sweetness.

T- It starts out tart then mellows into a light sweetness. You can taste the wheat at the end along with a mild bitterness.

M- Medium bodied and highly carbonated. The bubbles constantly rise in a steady stream from the bottom of the glass.

D- This is definitely one of the better Shiner Beers.

I don't really know how this compares to other Hefeweizen's since this is my first. I've always strayed away from wheat beers after trying a number of Belgian Whites. I think Belgian Whites are disgusting, the lack of hops and their character throws me off. However, I really enjoyed this Hefeweizen. It's definitely a lot different than a Belgian White. I will be trying more Hefeweizens in the future because of my positive experience with this brew.

A - A hazy light amber yellow with a half inch of head that quickly turns to a lace ring (fizzy). Head is somewhat sticky.

S - Slight sourdough and wheat along side of clove and lemon peel.

T - Flavors transition as lemon zest then sourdough with a wheat finish. Really is pretty good.

M - Pretty spot on as expected. Light to medium.

Overall not a bad take on the style, I really like how clean tasting it is rather than yeasty. Got about 3 more and would put them back rather quickly.

A: The beer is cloudy yellow in color and has a moderate to high amount of carbonation. It poured with a finger high bright white head that died down but consistently left a thin layer of bubbles covering the surface.
S: There are light to moderately strong aromas of clove, lemon citrus and wheat present in the nose.
T: The taste has flavors of wheat with notes of cloves and hints of sourness.
M: It feels light- to medium-bodied on the palate and has a high amount of carbonation.
O: The beer is easy to drink and has some refreshing properties but isn't thirst-quenching.

two finger off white head settles down to a cap on top of a hazy yellow body. smell and taste are matched perfectly. both displaying wheat, orange and lemon flavors and some spice in the back ground. mouthfeel is slightly creamy with good carbonation. overall this is a good beer. not like most hefes ive tasted with bananna and clove leading the way. i think they would be better off using this as their wheat beer and coming up with a new hefe. still a good beer on a hot day.

12 oz bottle poured into a pint glass.

Pours a cloudy pale yellow color with two full fingers of fluffy foam. Aroma is light citrus with a touch of light malt sweetness. No banana or clove detected.

First sip is... slightly harsh, minimal sweetness, and not much yeast flavor either. Tastes a bit minerally, with no distinguishing characteristics. Really falls short on flavor - but on the plus side, there is nothing offputting or objectionable either.

Looks aside, this resembles a blonde ale more than a hefe. Would not recommend.

Pours a clear bold yellow, more like a kristallweizen. Typical white fluffy head and some lace. The aroma is dough and lemons. It's flavor is lemony with honey, dough and some vanilla notes. The mouthfeel is light-medium and the finish is slightly dry. Spoetzl Shiner Hefeweizen is a good beer. Different for a hefe, more like a kristall, no yeast. Recommended.
