I was disappointed by this beer, perhaps I crave more of a caramel flavor from my darks. I felt it had a slight chemical odor and an unpleasant lingering after taste. The flavor balance just seemed off. But that's just the opinion of a novice reviewer. (252 characters)

12 ounce bottle into lager glass, no bottle dating. Pours fairly crystal clear very dark reddish brown color with a 1 finger dense light khaki head with good retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Light spotty soapy lacing clings down the glass, with a good amount of streaming carbonation. Aromas of chocolate, cocoa, coffee, toast, dark bread, light dark fruit, herbal, light pepper, and roasted earthiness. Nice and pleasant aromas with good balance of roast/bready malt and light-moderate earthy hop notes; with solid strength. Taste of chocolate, cocoa, coffee, toast, dark bread, light dark fruit, herbal, light pepper, and roasted earthiness. Light-moderate herbal/roasted bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of chocolate, cocoa, coffee, toast, dark bread, herbal, light pepper, and roasted earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Very nice robustness and balance of roast/bready malt and light-moderate earthy hop flavors; with a great roasted bitterness/sweetness balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Very clean on lager flavors with zero yeast ester notes present. Medium carbonation and body; with a very smooth, fairly crisp, and lightly creamy/chalky mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is very well hidden with zero warming present after the finish as expected of 4.9%. Overall this is a very good schwarzbier style. All around good robustness and balance of roast/bready malt and light-moderate earthy hop flavors; and very smooth and crisp to drink. A nicely enjoyable offering. (1,530 characters)

12 oz bottle, pint glass

A – Light black with some brown. Off white foam of less than an inch, with moderate retention.

S – Black malt and roasted malt, but not bitter at all. Very clean. Some light noble hops, herbal and floral. Chocolate becomes present as the beer warms.

T – Chocolate and roasty malt, like black bread. Very low herbal hop flavor, very low hop bitterness.

M – Moderate carbonation and a medium-thin body. Mostly dry throughout, with very little sweetness or bitterness. Finishes clean.

O – A very drinkable, sessionable beer. (585 characters)

12oz into a pint.

A: Nearly opaque black, hints of deep amber. 1/3" off-white head recedes quickly. Retention & lacing OK.

S: Toasty & bready, a little black coffee, licorice. All the aromas are pretty mild here.

T: Coffee & multigrain bread, a bit of cocoa, surprisingly robust & resinous hop character hiding out here. A bit more of that licorice.

M: Soapy with low/med. carb. Actually pretty hefty, semi-filling.

O: Extra points for how the use of hops in this brew really uplifts an otherwise monotone palate. I like it. (540 characters)

Decently carbonated black with nice head. Maybe I'm a little blocked up right now but no smell at all. Almost tastes like a malt soda lol. Tons of carbonation but smooth and tasty. (183 characters)

Exactly what I would expect from a black lager/schwarzbier. Poured nice & dark. Froathy light tan head with light lacing. Smells of light metal and a bit of fruit? Tastes like a schwarzbier lol. Very light bodied and easy to drink. A good all day drinker for me. (263 characters)

4/4...deep brown with touches of tan foam. Malty nose, hints of roasting, but with a sweetness beneath. Light taste, full of dark maltiness. Thick mouthfeel, very smooth. Nice balance of dark and light. (202 characters)

A: ruby brown

S: roasty, rich chocolate, malty

T: let down after the first two attributes. bitter. Nutty.

M: too watery, too much carbonation. Its essentially a bitter mineral water.

O: Definitely not false advertising since it tastes like its name. Black. Not going back. (280 characters)

Taste is roasted malt, sweet chocolate, and earthy/barky hops. Similar to an American black ale. The body is too light compared to what I am used to for either style. This is not a bad beer, but falls just below average for the scope of what I have had in the style. Nothing I would skip getting a variety pack for, but nothing to rush out for either. (355 characters)

Pours brown, settles in the glass black. Head recedes immediately, leaves no lacing on the glass.

Smells slightly hoppy, some sweet smelling notes.

Taste is light coffee and chocolate notes, finishes with an oat quality. Tastes a lot like Guinness only a bit more watered down.

Very thin, watery, medium carbonation, fairly smooth.

Not bad at all, but I would go to Guinness before this. (391 characters)

Poured from 12 oz bottle into pint glass.

Appearance: pours a frothy 2" cream colored head that falls moderately with mild lacing. Color is dark reddish brown.

Aroma: yeasty bread dough, cocoa, a bit of grassiness.

Mouthfeel: medium bodied and soda like with a dry, somewhat astringent finish.

Flavor: rich roasted barley, a bit of cocoa and coffee, definite smoke flavor. Some grassy and slight citrus rind hops.

Overall: very good for the style (451 characters)

The nose holds many of the the qualities of a bock beer with a smoky, caramel malt, grain, barley and carbonative aroma. The flavor is a bit sweet with a toffee maltiness, barley, grain and light chocolate malt. It just tastes cheap and detracts from the overall experience. (274 characters)

Pours a cola color dark brown with a slight garnet hue . Clear and has a tan head of thinnish foam that lasted well and left lace. Nose is malty, cocoa, and dark malts. Dry biscuit and bit of faint caramel. Taste is good, follows the nose. malty but has less complexity on the palate than on the nose. That caramel is soft but stronger in the drink than on the nose. Finishes with a small touch of something bitter but nothing full blown. Tiny bit of char to come forward at the very last moment of the swallow. Darn good. (532 characters)

12oz bottle, no apparent freshness date. I had this one a few years ago and gave it a 3.5/5. Thanks to my brother-in-law and father-in-law for the "Family Reunion" mixed 12 pack for my birthday. It's nice to come back to this particular beer.
A - dark brown with a frothy tan head that holds decent retention
S - roasted grain, chocolate, earthy hops
T - nice blend of flavors with roasted barley, chocolate, coffee, caramel, and earthy hops
M - thinner body, ample carbonation, clean finish
O - just as I remember it, good flavor, good representation of a Schwarzbier, but nothing spectacular. I'd get this in a pinch if needed but wouldn't search it out in the future. (670 characters)

look: 3.5 | smell: 3.5 | taste: 3.75 | feel: 4 | overall: 3.75

Standard pour from a 12 oz bottle into a pilsner glass yielded a 1-finger tan head that quickly fell to a film at the surface. No lacing to speak of beyond a few specks here and there on the glass. Color is a deep clear cola-brown.

Nose is yeasty and bread-y. Not as much hops as one would expect from a lager.

Flavors were dominated by toasted coffee-like malt, with a trace of bread and some nutty notes. Some subtle hops near the end. Finish is on the dry side.

Mouthfeel is medium-light, quite carbonated, one of the more traditionally lager-ish aspects of the beer.

Overall, a solid if not spectacular beer, this could be an interesting alternative to traditional lagers, refreshing but more substantial than what many may be used to in the style. (758 characters)

12 oz bottle was poured into a pint glass.

Appearance: This beer poured a one finger mocha head that reduced to a thin layer. It is a dark brown black color with no vision of anything. Very typical for a schwarzbier.

Smell: Toffee, caramel, doughy, bready, chocolate, roasted, and lager yeast.

Taste: Same as above. Sweet and like a loaf of bread. Reminds me of a bock a little bit.

Mouthfeel: Smooth, light to medium bodied, a little chewy, some sweetness, and low to medium carbonation.

Overall: Nice Schwarzbier. I could revisit this one again this winter. Easy to drink and enjoyable. (606 characters)

First time trying a Schwarz.

Appearance (4) : Transparent straw colored body with...haha just kidding.

A deep dark brown opaque body with a creamy almond colored 1 finger head. The creaminess retains itself but the head does descend a bit to about 1/4".

Smell (4.25) : Roasted malts, some coffee bean, milk chocolate, spiced black licorice. A small faint whiff of coriander. This is mostly a malt-heavy beer.

Taste (4.25) : Deep, dark, roasted flavor with coffee and almond accents. I like this a lot. It begins at the tip of the tongue with a slight bitter coffee bean but in the millisecond that it slides from the tip to the middle the coffee bean disappears and is replaced by a malty robust body. The finish is slightly bitter but in a dark roast coffee type of way. A little nutty, a tad toasty, also smokey. Good all around.

Mouthfeel (3.75) : Smooth, creamy, medium bodied. The creaminess does evaporate into water a little too soon for my preference. Ends with a smokey finish.

Overall (4.22) : I would drink this again and again. Much better poured than in a bottle. This may not be the finest Schwarzbier out there (I'm sure, as this is my first) but this beer is pretty tasty. I'll drink this again in the future. (1,233 characters)

Poured from a 12 OZ bottle into a pint glass.
Aroma- Has a decent hop aroma.
Appearance- A black colored beer with a small tannish head.
Taste- Has a nice coffee, malt and oat flavor.
Palate- Alight bodied beer with moderate carbonation. Has a fairly dry finish.
Overall- An average Schwarzbier, I really love Spoetzl Brewing but this one didn't drive me crazy. (363 characters)

Pours a brownish-black hue with a huge head into my glass.

Odd, metallic note greets the nose. I don't detect much beyond that. Wait, there is a touch of roastiness.

Quickly turns into a weak mess with what I perceive to be caramel and dark fruit. It tastes more like a botched black-n-tan than anything.

Finishes flat at the back of the throat.

Not recommended. You can get much better examples elsewhere. (410 characters)

12oz Brown bottle with twist-off cap. Possibly a "06 2014" bottled on date? Poured into a Stange glass.

Appearance: Pours a clear, Dark brown with 1 finger of head. This beer looks stunning in the sunlight with vibrant maroon tones at the bottom of the glass

Smell: Light toasted malts and slight floral note

Taste: The toasted malt note from the aroma comes up front with roast flavor building until the finish which is semi dry with some sweetness

Mouthfeel: Well carbonated with the finish preventing it from being too creamy

Overall: Its been a while since I last enjoyed this beer and it still is as enjoyable as I remember. This is a great beer when you want a dark beer with roasted notes without being too heavy. This is also a great alternative to those not wanting a nitro Guinness since it offers a similar dryness. As long as you don't go in expecting a full-bodied porter or stout, this is a great beer that I would love to pair with some oysters or smoked cheese. (992 characters)

Serving Type: 12 oz bottle poured into a glass mug.

Smell: Mild roasted malt, very slightly smoky.

Taste: Roasted and sweet malt; some mild bitter and sour black coffee flavors.

Mouthfeel: Smooth, light bodied and moderately carbonated.

Overall: A bit too malty sweet to be very refreshing, but still easy to drink a few. (404 characters)

Taste: Some malt flavors, but only a little hops flavor.

Mouth feel: Thin.

A: Motor oil dark. Amber hints when I hold it up to the light.

S: Fairly neutral aroma, which is surprising given the roast flavor notes.

T: Uncomplicated schwarzbier with a great roasted aftertaste. Crisp on the front end. This would be a good introduction to the style since it isn't too in your face.

M: Slightly syrupy when it warms up a little.

O: Enjoyable, but it's a little too heavy for me to want another one but it wasn't heavy enough to be noteworthy. (467 characters)

Bottle from the mixed 12 pack
Pours a solid dark brown with faint ruby highlights at the edges and a smallish off white head that quickly dissipates to nothing. Aromas of caramel and burnt sugars with just a hint of chocolate and a faint earthy hop to counter. The flavor is malty sweet with lots of darker sugars and melanoids and just a hint of earth, chocolate, and light fruit. Medium body with a moderate level of carbonation. Decent dark lager, probably my favorite from the mix. (485 characters)
