The Shiner brand is practically a state heirloom with each generation of Texans introducing it to the next. While other Texas brewers took the "artistic" road in their offerings, our friends at Spoetzl Brewing have stayed to the middle of the Devil's Backbone.

A Helles lager is offered in celebration of their 99th anniversary. I found it to be refreshing and an interesting contrast to their other offerings.

I feel this beer is FANtastic. This has to be the BEST 99th year anniversary beer from a South Texas brewery that I've ever had.

Poured this beer into a pint glass. Poured a golden color with an almost white head. The smell is grainey, with a touch of malts. The taste is very light, kinda malty, but I do sense a hint of wheat maybe? Anyways, it is a very good clean taste. The mouthfeel is very light and crisp. A very fine beer that if made year round, I would put into constant rotation. The drinkability is very good, I would recomend this beer to anyone. Another great beer from Shiner

Despite the fact that Shiner's standard lineup is less than stellar (OK, they pretty much suck, being terrible examples of the styles they purport to be), I think that they have done OK with their anniversary series. Not great, but OK. Picked up this one because I am a fan of the style, and this one deserves a decent appraisal.

I am kind of surprised at the previous reviews...my opinion is that this beer is a very good example of the Munich Helles style and just a well-executed beer overall.

Aroma: Grainy malt character, with a hint of sweetness, very light DMS (OK for style), with a low floral, slightly spicy hop aroma. The label says Hallertau hops, and that fits. Without a doubt an all-malt beer. No adjuncts in this one, which fits the style too.

Appearance: Pale gold, brilliant clarity with a fluffy white head that diminishes a bit too rapidly. Moderate carbonation is apparent.

Taste: Grainy, malty sweetness that is almost, but not quite, balanced by a low level of hop bitterness. Hop flavor is apparent but in the background - again, very spicy and herbal German hops. I imagine this is all pils malt (contributing the graininess) and all Hallertauer.

Mouthfeel: Medium body, with moderate carbonation that does not overwhelm the palate. No astringency. Despite the fact that this is a malt-forward beer, it is fairly crisp and not at all underattenuated.

Drinkability: Very good - This is one that goes well with light meals. It has enough flavor but is still easy-drinking enough to be a good beer for quaffing sans food.

In short, I am impressed with this beer. It hits the style markers, and is an enjoyable beer to drink as well.

A - Pours up crystal clear and golden with a small white head.

S - Slight malt aroma, dominated by noble hops.

T - Malt sweetness with nice balance of hops. Very smooth. Finishes slightly sweet with a bitter hop taste at the back of the tongue.

M - Very good.

D - Extremely drinkable beer, This is a nice improvement over the amber.

A good shiner brew but nothing exemplary/special

A- Settles in the glass a light-copper/amber with not much head to speak of

S- Smells pretty good with a balance of sweet malts and spicy Noble hops. Unfortunately has a mettalic tone from the bottle.

T- Taste is what sticks out in this beer. Sweet, relaxed malt with a balanced spike of Hallertau Noble hops. The description on the bottle describes it well

M- Sorta grainy and harsh like most pils but not light and refreshing enough to capture the style

D- Drinks well like most Shiner brews

Appearance:
The predominant color is gold, however it has an ever-so-slight orange tint to it. I suppose that this is expected of a lager. Excessive carbonation rises quickly to the top then dissapates. Minimal head forms - not quite one finger.

Smell:
A sweet aroma permeates deeply. Upon deep inhalation, there seems to be just an ever-so-slight hint of lemon. It's quite an inviting aroma.

Taste:
Quite refreshing; slightly sweet and definately not overpowering. The beer is quite hoppy, as this seems to be the predominant flavor. Having only "officially" reviewed a few beers, my palate is not as defined; I can't quite identify the more subtle flavors but they add good "character."

Mouthfeel:
Smooth and clean finishing - just like a good lager. The beer isn't too "heavy" and it doesn't leave much of an after taste.

Drinkability:
It would be quite easy to get carried away with this beer, but for the purposes of this review I'll abstain from doing so. I suppose that this would be a compliment to the brewer properly emulating the style; lagers are typically renowned for their "easy drinkability" (if that is such a phrase).

Summary:
For a specialty beer, I was expecting a little "more." I don't know quite how to explain that, but I guess I was looking for more of a "unique" flavor. However, I can't really rate anything less than "good" because it's still a pretty good beer. I've only gotten to experience the Bock back home in Illinois, so I'm fortunate that I've gotten the opportunity to try and review some of Shiner's other brews out-of-state.

Smell- Nice crisp, malty smell with hint of floral hoppiness.

Taste- Very crisp and clean. Nice sweet maltiness witha hint of bitterness.

Mouthfeel- Light body with medium-high carbonation.

Overall- Overall this beer is a nice crisp, clean lager which is very drinkable during the hot days of summer.

Deep and bright yellow, crystal clear body with no head or lacing.

Great hop nose with a nice malty, grainy sweetness.

Big hop flavor, maybe too big for the style, but tasty.

Highly carbonated and pretty drying.

A pretty good beer from a brewery I usually don't dig too much. Check it out if you're in the mood for something light but still full of flavor.

Standard pint glass works for this one.
Clear light golden color. Head thinned out into nothingness all too quickly.

Pale sweet malts dominate the nose. Hints of clover, red grapes, honey and hawaiian bread. A pleasant aroma that is pretty big for such a light colored beer.

Taste follows suit nicely with plenty of that pale malt flavor, tastes alot more carbonated than the appearence would indicate. A lager with plenty 'o flava. Small amount of hops provide a nice clean finish. Mouthfeel is nice for a lager.

One of Shiner's finest, a good American interpretation of this style. Snap some of these limited release six-packs up while they last.

This beer is a crystal clear gold(bright). It has a small head that fades fast. Nice sweet malt aroma with a bit of hops in it. I don't detect any adjuncts in the flavor at all. I would say this beer is true to style. Very good malt and hop balance and extremly easy drinking. Leaves a little residual sweet flavor on the palate. I hope Shiner keeps this beer around. The bottle looks good too.

The beer pours a light straw, forming a 1 inch white head that fades quickly. Very light spots of lace slide down the glass. The aroma is a light hop presence, along with a slightly stronger grassy smell. The taste starts out with a light fruity/hop flavor, leading to a grass middle, and ending with a smooth light malt finish. Light smooth mouthfeel. Light refreshing flavor and low abv. make for a highly drinkable beer. Overall, not a bad beer, and definitely one with a summer feel. A fine offering from Shiner.

A: Bright orange/gold color. Big carbonation that quickly delivers a one inch coarse head that very quickly disapates to nothing. Minimal lacing at the start, then nothing.

S: Sightly sweet malt smell up front with a citrusy background. Detect slight hop bitter if I agitate it a bit.

T: Slightly sweet with the hops presenting more dominantly than in smell. Subtle flavors that are very well-balanced.

M: Very crisp and very smooth finish. Medium body.

D: Leaves me wanting more - especially sitting outside on a warm dry summer evening. Very easy to drink and not a bit filling.

The beer poured a suprisingly rich bright gold, a little darker than I associate with the style, but a very appetizing color with a fine white lace. The aroma was of light malt. The taste is lightly malty, as expected, with just a hint of hops to finish. The beer is light and dry. This was a suprisingly robust Helles and one I would be happy to purchase again.

I reluctantly bought this beer. Normally I'm not much of a Shiner fan but I was on a recent beer run and picked up a single bottle, "what the hell".
Poured into a standard pint glass. Light golden color and very bubbly. Had about 1/2 inch of head.
Taste was very much spot on to a Munich Helles. I drank a lot of Helles when I was in Germany in October. I really love this style and it isn't produced much in the states. I like to have a break sometimes between the Stouts, barleywines and DIPA's that I normally drink.

This is a very quaffable brew.

I would love to try this on tap in a Masse (Liter stein).

Pours a clear, bright golden. A one finger, white head quickly fades to a patchy film. Light bready malts, and a spicy, leafy hop character in the aroma.

Clean and crisp. Light, slightly grainy malts are followed by an herbal, peppery hop character that imparts a subtle hop bitterness to the finish. Its light body and vigorous carbonation give the beer a refreshing quality, while a bit of dryness from the hops keeps you drinking.

Overall a pretty good lager, light and refreshing, but far from bland.

Pours a bright, clear, yellow straw color with ample suds. Smells of grain malts and a very faint sweetness/honey and hop spice. Taste of forward leaning malt with hops that lean to the back. Light-medium mouthfeel with calm carbonation and average drinkability for a Munich lager. A common representation of the style that pays tribute to Shiner's rich German tradition and heritage.

I like that Shiner is doing well enough to break out from the grip of their ordinary (but solid) Bock to brew some other styles. Their Shiner Black is a nice schwarzbier, and I already know, after having two prior to this review, the 99 is a good helles lager.

Pours a bright, crisp looking pale gold straw color. Big white fluffy head but it fades fast. Some lace, but not much. The nose is malty but unimpressive. Some buttery popcorn scent with a bit of lemon, but nothing overly special. The taste is smooth and malty and nice. Lightly fruity (mostly lemon, maybe some white grape juice) but with a solid malt punch. Good sweet malty aftertaste with the faintest hint of hops (maybe my mind playing tricks on me). Mouthfeel is smooth, almost creamy upon warming to room temp.

A fine beer from the crew at the Spoetzl Brewery. This is one of their best efforts, in my opinion. True to the style and very tasty. I would recommend this to fans of the style and fans of German lagers in general. A fine alternative to much other stuff out there, and a good example of an under-appreciated style.

Given a vigorous pour into a tall chalice, it comes out with a clear bright gold color and a large inch-tall head of frothy foam. The nose is a bit bland, though, with only a bit of light, grainy malt. Sweet maltiness predominates in the flavor. There are some hints of a some very slight melanoidins. Bitterness is low, with a clean finish.

Not an exciting beer--but it is closely to style. Helles just isn't a particularly interesting style.

Pours a clear golden color with one inch of bubbley white head. Decent retention.

Aroma is up to par. Familiar light malt tones boasting a little sweetness.

Taste is nice. A simple light malt character, very typical.

Mouthfeel is medium bodied with a big carbonation bite.

Drinkability is high. Low alcohol, good flavor, crisp and refreshing makes for an easy drink and a summer pleasure.
