The beer pours a honey golden color with a small head and no retention, but it does leave a little lace on the glass.

Smells like apple juice with a hint of grain. The taste is lightly toasted grain and just enough hop oiliness and bitterness to finish it off. However, the metallic aftertaste kind of ruins the whole thing.

Mouthfeel is crisp, albeit a little thick and not what I was expecting at all. As far as drinkability goes, judging from the metallic aftertaste and the heartburn I'm getting as I'm drinking the beer (and I rarely get heartburn), I definitely don't want another.

Poured a nice clear yellow with fluffy white head that hung around for a while. Aroma is subdued hoppiness with hints of citrus. Flavor is nicely malty that is balanced by the hops. Mouthfeel is good. Not my favorite style, but this is very high on the drinkability scale.

This beer is a crystal clear gold(bright). It has a small head that fades fast. Nice sweet malt aroma with a bit of hops in it. I don't detect any adjuncts in the flavor at all. I would say this beer is true to style. Very good malt and hop balance and extremly easy drinking. Leaves a little residual sweet flavor on the palate. I hope Shiner keeps this beer around.

A: A golden straw color. Small white head forms and recedes fast with lots of bubbles rising to the top. Just a touch of lace.
S: Grainy, musky aroma at first. A touch of hops and some light malt aromas.
T: On first sip, a nice sweet caramel malt flavor that I enjoy, but almost immediately gives way to a grainy and metallic macro lager taste. Not a lot of hop content.
M/D: Highly carbonated with a light and fizzy feel. Fairly smooth though. I could session several of these during a hot afternoon.

I am disappointed with this for the most part. Shiner beers are hit and miss with me, and this is a miss. I will be looking forward to their Shiner 100 though.

Poured from 12 oz bottle into pilsner glass.

A - Bright golden color; they mean it when they say it was brewed to be bright. One finger head that quickly disappeared into nothing with no lacing. Nice stream of bubbles from the bottom.

S - A lot of corn and macro-lager smell, with a slight overtone of spicy hops.

T - More of the corn dominates at first, and soon gives way the spicy character of the hops. Tastes a lot like a suped-up macro. Slightly sweet on the finish, with hops not contributing much to bitterness. Very little malt profile.

M - Fairly thin and highly carbonated. Pretty refreshing.

D - Very easy to drink. Thin enough to down quickly, though the carbonation gets in the way some, but the flavor makes up for it. A decent, cheap, flavorful beer to make a night with.

This is my first Helles lager, but I've had a few Czech Pilsners and of course my fair share of American lagers. It's not a bad beer, but it isn't particularly engaging.

A - Poured out a golden yellow color with a good deal of carbonation. It had a two-finger, bubbly, white head.

S - It smelled of corn and light caramel malt.

T - It had a smooth blend of grains and light caramel maltiness. Also, a very subtle spice kick.

M - It was crisp and sharp. A very light-bodied beer.

D - This isn't bad, but I'd rather have a true German brew of this style.

I like that Shiner is doing well enough to break out from the grip of their ordinary (but solid) Bock to brew some other styles. Their Shiner Black is a nice schwarzbier, and I already know, after having two prior to this review, the 99 is a good helles lager.

Pours a bright, crisp looking pale gold straw color. Big white fluffy head but it fades fast. Some lace, but not much. The nose is malty but unimpressive. Some buttery popcorn scent with a bit of lemon, but nothing overly special. The taste is smooth and malty and nice. Lightly fruity (mostly lemon, maybe some white grape juice) but with a solid malt punch. Good sweet malty aftertaste with the faintest hint of hops (maybe my mind playing tricks on me). Mouthfeel is smooth, almost creamy upon warming to room temp.

A fine beer from the crew at the Spoetzl Brewery. This is one of their best efforts, in my opinion. True to the style and very tasty. I would recommend this to fans of the style and fans of German lagers in general. A fine alternative to much other stuff out there, and a good example of an under-appreciated style.

An American Helles - sounds cool to me. It's a style we probably should see more of, considering the typical American beer palate could easily adjust to it.

Pours a standard yellow to golden color. Looks just like most German helles beers I've had, and I've had a lot. It's always funny to see people say a color isn't impressive when an American brewery does it, but when someone else does, it's "spot on." Head's there and with a proper pour, forms normally per the style.
Smells grainy and a little malty. It's headed in the right direction, but it's not quite there. It's too subdued.
Tastes sweet and slightly toasted, with a hint of hops in the finish. Much like the smell, they seem to have the style understood, but their attempt isn't strong enough. It's like they took a Bavarian example and watered it down. It's good, but just needs more flavor.
Mouthfeel's fine. Not too thin, but not a carbonated monster either.
I could certainly have a couple of these, but because the flavor's so mild, these would serve better as a lawnmower brew.
Looks and feels like a Helles, and even tastes and smells like one. Too bad it tastes and smells like one mixed with an extra 1/3 cup of water. Close...but not quite there. Still, an appreciated effort.

Appearance: Straw pale yellow. Crystal clear. Fleeting white head.

Smell: Smells of noble hops. Slightly skunked. Malt aromas present along with some crystal.

Taste: Skunked beer. Noble hops. moderate bitterness. Sweet malty aftertaste. Pleasant to drink.

Mouthfeel: Slight tinge of carbonation. Light body.

Drinkability: Much better than BMC. kinda reminds me of Heineken with the skunky hop flavor. would buy again. This would be nicer with a longer lasting head. Hop bitterness, flavor and aroma dead on for style. Nice beer

My boys in Texas. Good to be home. Beer is a bit on the malty side. I actually liked it better a bit warmed up. Straw colored with with white fleeting head. Subtle malt on flavor and smell with very low aftertaste. Not bad, but I'm looking forward to the 100th anniversary.

This is a very blonde beer that's crystal clear with medium carbonation and a thin, light tan head that quickly thins out. There's some mild lacing around the edge of the glass, but nothing fancy. It has a sweet semi malty aroma to it, its got a light feel to it, but it does have a clean crisp taste with a bit of spice and some mild malts as well, there is sweet undertone through out with a bitter aftertaste.

Pours a rich golden color with a medium shortly lasting head in a lager glass. Smell is lemony almost with light sweet malt mainly and some stale-ish cardboardy grain notes. Taste is malty, refreshing and simple, much like a kolsch. Hint of bittering hops to balance, but still slightly sweet overall, and very easy drinking. Nothing fancy but an acceptable lawnmower beer.

The beer pours a light straw, forming a 1 inch white head that fades quickly. Very light spots of lace slide down the glass. The aroma is a light hop presence, along with a slightly stronger grassy smell. The taste starts out with a light fruity/hop flavor, leading to a grass middle, and ending with a smooth light malt finish. Light smooth mouthfeel. Light refreshing flavor and low abv. make for a highly drinkable beer. Overall, not a bad beer, and definitely one with a summer feel. A fine offering from Shiner.

Presentation: 12 oz longneck, twist. Nice retro label, no date.

Appearance: Pours crystal clear and golden, nice head fades to almost no lacing, light bubbling.

Smell: Grain, noble hops, and just a hint of sulphur.

Taste: Medium mouthfeel, very high carbonation. Taste is mainly clean grain, a bit of hops in the finish, but fairly smooth.

Overall impression: Very sessionable, but not the most exciting beer I've tried. The carbonation is a bit high for my tastes.

Shiner '99 Helles
Bottle Inspection: A lot of words talking about how this is celebrating the 99th year of brewing by Spoetzl brewing, and a note about Hallertau hops.

Aroma: Grainy malt with a firm earthy hop note. Hops seem noble (oh, the label claims Hallertau, I should read first) and there is a yeast element.

Appearance: Bright, painfully bright yellow gold with lots of carbonation streams that struggle to hold a thin white head that failed to lace or last.

Flavor: Lightly sweet with a slightly metallic earthy hop bitterness that keeps the package balanced.

Mouthfeel: Carbonation is extremely high which with the light body makes for almost painful drinking. Body seems a bit thin.

Overall Impression: Not a bad taste, easy to session, but the carbonation level is a flaw in my book. This is one of the brightest beers I've seen; it just has a glow about it.
I'm happy to celebrate Shiner's upcoming 100th year, but I hope they bring a heavier beer to the party next year.

The Shiner line-up is usually my cheap beer of choice, and the anniversary editions have been fairly decent, though generally not as good as the regular Shiner Bock.

Shiner 99, however, is the most disappointing brew to come out of Shiner. All I could think of from the time I opened to bottle until the last sip was "Shiner has re-bottled Bud Light and slapped their logo on it". Utterly disappointing, indeed. I hope they can redeem themselves with Shiner 100.

Pours a late sunset gold colour .... a truly gross aroma emanates from my glass ... some foam buts disappears in minutes ...Taste is messed up and too muddled for me to carry on.... A HUGE disappointment! ..if you think Shiner Bock is bad, which i really can't drink anymore, this will make you shiver, my lowest Shiner beer to date...

I know i am being a bit harsh on this one, but it really seems to lack pride... that being said, the best thing about this beer is the cap!

Deep and bright yellow, crystal clear body with no head or lacing.

Great hop nose with a nice malty, grainy sweetness.

Big hop flavor, maybe too big for the style, but tasty.

Highly carbonated and pretty drying.

A pretty good beer from a brewery I usually don't dig too much. Check it out if you're in the mood for something light but still full of flavor.

I reluctantly bought this beer. Normally I'm not much of a Shiner fan but I was on a recent beer run and picked up a single bottle, "what the hell".
Poured into a standard pint glass. Light golden color and very bubbly. Had about 1/2 inch of head.
Taste was very much spot on to a Munich Helles. I drank a lot of Helles when I was in Germany in October. I really love this style and it isn't produced much in the states. I like to have a break sometimes between the Stouts, barleywines and DIPA's that I normally drink.

This is a very quaffable brew.

I would love to try this on tap in a Masse (Liter stein).

Poured from a 12oz bottle into a pilsner glass.

A: Very nice. Clear, good carbonation. What little head there was dissipated rapidly and left no lacing, but that's to be expected. Carbonation continues throughout session.

S: Light, floral hop aroma faintly detected. Straw, hay, and grains make up the rest of the very faint aroma.

T/M/D: Great balance between sweet malty grains and subtle hop notes. Very clean and refreshing. Light bodied, highly drinkable. This beer won't blow you away, but it is a very accurate depiction of the style. And it's a $5 six pack in Texas!

Poured golden typical beer color with white foamy head tha quickly disappeared. This is what I remember beer looking like before BA. Not much smell on the smell, but a little bit of grainy malt with subdued hops and the taste is not too much different. Not a lot of hop bitterness. A little bit of a corn flavor. Giving me memories of budweiser. Mouthfeel not bad-carbonated appropriately. This is a better version of American pilsner but not as interesting as Czech/German Pils. Would go down easy on a hot Texas day, but I wouldn't seek it out.

Given a vigorous pour into a tall chalice, it comes out with a clear bright gold color and a large inch-tall head of frothy foam. The nose is a bit bland, though, with only a bit of light, grainy malt. Sweet maltiness predominates in the flavor. There are some hints of a some very slight melanoidins. Bitterness is low, with a clean finish.

Not an exciting beer--but it is closely to style. Helles just isn't a particularly interesting style.

Pours out to a nice Golden Color, with a white head. Aroma is strong. But the taste is bland. It's not bad, but it's nothing that will make you say "whoa".

This will be my first and last 6'er of 99
