Quick review - yuch! I feel bad about such a negative review, but this is probably the worst beer I have ever had. I would rather drink a Heineken and I can't stand Heineken. This is my second one and I'm drinking it a) to get it out of my refrigerator (will not chill the remaining four) and b) so I can report on it here.

I poured it in a 16oz. pint glass. The color was a dark reddish brown with more than an inch of head that almost immediately disappeared. Very good looking beer with a nice color.

The smell is definitely peachy but also almost like something rotten. The peach scent smells authentic. It doesn't smell like potpourri or anything.

The taste is sour-peachy sitting on top of something that almost tastes good. This seems like a good recipe to ruin a dunkelweizen (one of my favorite styles of beer).

The mouthfeel was medium thick with no fizzy feel to it. I did not give this beer time to warm. I just can't take the taste.

I hope if Shiner offers a Holiday Cheer next year, they experiment in another direction. I'll be sure to pick it up if I see it.

Review from BeerAdvocate magazine Vol. II Issue XI:

Dunkelweizen meets fruitcake. Here is Spoetzl Brewery's take on making a holiday beer out of a Bavarian-Style Dark Wheat Beer. Brewed with peaches, pecans, natural flavor and caramel color. Hey, at least they admit they use flavoring and color. Worried? Perhaps, but we'll let our taste buds be the judge.

Yup, it's a wheat beer with its towering head, good retention and all. Peach aroma dominates the nose, yet there are hints of pecans and some toasted maltiness. Ample smoothness with a slick, medium body. Fresh wheat malt and toasted grain are a good base that hold this beer together. Peach flavor has a mild twang within the subtle sweetness. Nutty, with a light pecan note in the middle. Mild hop presence does not get in the way, though it does help to balance. Finishes dry with a toasted bread crust and lingering pecan flavor.

Interesting, a flavored holiday ale where we would possibly want more than one. Nice to see something different rather than the usual pie spicing that ends up tasting like organic toothpaste. A good pick for the holiday party, as it will definitely spark some interest if not conversation. This is without a doubt a beer that non-beer drinkers could approach and hopefully get pulled into.

Wow a holiday beer in mid October...it gets earlier every year it seems like.Poured into a weizen glass a deep reddish infused russet color with a thinner pillow-like head atop.Peach and toasted wheat in the nose, not bad but the peach seemed artificial, maybe its not, just seemed so.Alot of peach flavor and there is some of the roasted pecan flavor in there, its smooth and surprisingly rich.A bit of toasted wheat malt to go with the fruity and nuttiy flavors. Not a bad beer,I bought it for my wife and I came out liking it more than her.Again Shiner gives me a pleasant surprise.

A- Awefully clear for a Dunkelweisse. Red/amber with, I think, the most bubbles i've ever seen rising to a frothy head.

S- Peachy? Yes. Also, somewhat of a dirty dish sponge note that is off-putting and some sweet malt.

T&M- Fairly muddled taste, but clearly peachy. Slightly nutty in the finish, but the highlights for me were caramel and vanilla in the mid-palate, and a nice malty mouthfeel. Gets a little better as it warms.

Not a very desirable beer by any means and definately a stretch calling this a Dunkelweiss.

Notes from 11/30/2010; best by 2/17/11

Pours a deep reddish brown w/1-2 fingers of light brown head.

Smell is massive peach aroma. It is interesting but a little domineering. Wheat and malt aromas come through as well.

Taste is peach, wheat and malt predominately, though some faint notes of pecan do come through. Interesting flavor combination, actually tastes pretty good.

Mouthfeel is light and clean.

Overall, the peach is a bit much after awhile, but I though this was an unexpectedly interesting, easy drinking holiday brew.

Presentation: It was poured from a brown 12 oz bottle into a tulip glass.

Appearance: The body has a dark garnet red color with visible carbonation inside. The pour produced a tall light tan head with good retention and lacing.

Smell: There are loads of ripe and over ripe peaches, nectarines and plums. Behind all the fruit it has a light white bready maltiness.

Taste / Palate: The aroma is matched on the tongue. It’s sweet up front with loads of stone fruit with a touch of tart black cherry. Mild hop bitterness come in to add a nice balance of bitterness in the finish.

Notes: This is an amazingly complex and well-balanced beer from the Spoetzl Brewery!

A simply unique seasonal Christmas beer! Living in NE Ohio we are fortunate enough to enjoy Great Lakes Christmas Ale and Thirsty Dog's 12 Dogs of Christmas. However, Shiner Cheer from Texas has become our favorite Holiday beer surpassing all the fantastic beers we are able to enjoy in Ohio. Additionally, the branding and color permutation of the label may be the best out there. So cool and so glad this beer has arrived!

Bottle pours a clear mahogany body with a creamy beige head that lasts the duration. Some attractive patchy lace clings to the glass. Nice looker.

Aroma is peeaches and toasted pecans. Peach essence seems to be a blend of canned and fresh.

Body and carbonation are medium and the mouthfeel has the creaminess of a dunkelweizen.

Taste is like the aroma, toasted pecans and peaches. A hint of wheat malt twang is the only suggestion of a dunkelweizen. Vague hop bitterness balances.

No real dunkelweizen character here but the peaches and pecans create a unique taste profile. An interesting take on a holiday brew.

Pours dark red with an off-white head. Aroma is strong peaches and maybe some pecans. Flavor is pecan, caramel malt and peaches. Quite a bit of nuttyness in the flavor and it finishes slightly bitter. Medium mouthfeel and carbonation. I think this is targeted towards macro drinkers but it is an interesting beer anyway. Not bad overall.
