Appearance: Pours reddish amber with a hint of haziness. The head is small and off-white, is composed of rather small bubbles, and retains well, with sticky, patchy lacing. Numerous streams of very small bubbles drift lazily to the surface.
Aroma: Sweet caramel vies with mild herbal hops, the aroma is very pleasant, but seems understated for the style. There is a hint of earth as well.
Taste: Opens with toasted and caramel malts, soon followed by mildly sweet alcohol. The malt presence is solid throughout. As the taste progresses, sweet alcohol is notable, as well as a late wave of floral and herbal hops.
Mouth feel: Smooth, soft and pleasant, quite pleasing.
Drinkability/notes: A very good effort, certainly Shiner's best beer at present, and one which I hope continues to be porduced past its centennial year. A worthy effort.
Presentation: Packaged in a twelve ounce brown glass long-neck bottle with a twist-off crown, served in a standard pint tap glass.

This 1 has been in the cellar for a couple years.
Pours a slightly hazy dark amber brown with a quarter inch khaki foamy head that dissipates into a thin film.
Melanoidin, deeply caramelized malt, forms the initial aroma. Very buttery, nutty, toffee notes blend with a sherry-like dark fruit note that is reminiscent of black cherries.
Flavor reveals dark fruit notes of plum and cherry, along with a hint of sherry. Prunes and raisins combine with deeply toasted caramel malt and roasted nuts. There's a hint of cardboard due to oxidation.
Body is a touch full, with low carbonation and slight alcohol warmth.
This has been interesting. Aged quite well. Probably close to being too old.
