Review from BeerAdvocate magazine Issue #26:

Clear and tawny with a patch of tan lacing; a towering head that slowly dissipates. Sweet, dark breadiness owns the nose--a malt bomb for sure. Smooth and creamy with a solid medium body, not too thick, but the body holds together quite well. Layers of malt sweetness unfold with dark bread, faint raw cane sugar and a bit of toasted biscuit in the back. Hops drop a modest bitterness on the palate with a quick showing of spiciness that melds well with the light peppery alcohol warmth. Finishes semisweet with more of that dark breadiness.

Very traditional compared to some of the massive "in your face" alcoholic malt bombs that some craft brewers have taken the style to. More delicate and even a bit small when put against its German counterparts, aside from the fact that it's still one tasty beer. A fitting nod to their 100 years of brewing.

This 1 has been in the cellar for a couple years.

Pours a slightly hazy dark amber brown with a quarter inch khaki foamy head that dissipates into a thin film.

Melanoidin, deeply caramelized malt, forms the initial aroma. Very buttery, nutty, toffee notes blend with a sherry-like dark fruit note that is reminiscent of black cherries.

Flavor reveals dark fruit notes of plum and cherry, along with a hint of sherry. Prunes and raisins combine with deeply toasted caramel malt and roasted nuts. There's a hint of cardboard due to oxidation.

Body is a touch full, with low carbonation and slight alcohol warmth.

This has been interesting. Aged quite well. Probably close to being too old.
