Shiner Kosmos Reserve pours an amber color with an off white head from a brown twelve ounce bottle. The aroma is mild, perhaps a bit malty. Bready malt flavors are noticeable at first, hops come in to balance it out toward the end. Nice and light, reasonably tasty, a decent warm weather beer.

The beer pours a yellow orange color with a white head. The aroma is sweet adjuncts with some earthy hops. The flavor is a mix of corn, wheat, grassy hops and grapes. Medium mouthfeel and medium carbonation. Not terrible by any means, but not too good either.

An interesting lager...supposed to be dry hopped..aroma gives off an herbal like impression...nice frothy white head on top of this golden colored beer...

Definitely more of a hop impression on this than their regular lager...the hops lend a grassy, lemony dimension....the maltiness is bready as it seems with most of their lager style beers...

A nice drinker with some interesting notes....kind of a pale ale/lager blend....solid beer...

An extra from a trade with rudge75 at Half Pints. Thanks for the great trade, Dave! Kosmos reserve pours a crystal-clear honey colour with a good cover of off-white head.

The nose is of grain, yeast, sweet malt and light hops. Smells like a lager.

Tastes of grain, light earthy hops and light malt. No off flavours but nothing distinguishing either. Slightly drying finish.

Medium body and medium-high carbonation.

This is drinkable enough but pretty bland. A decent, average lager and not one I'll be looking for again.

12-ounce brown bottle with twist-off cap poured into a pilsner flute.

Appearance is quite nice. Deep gold in color with a thick two-fingered head of creamy slightly off-white foam that fades away slowly to a thick cap. A steady stream of bubbles provides excellent head retention and leaves behind a few fat rings on the walls of the glass as it empties. Wonderful clarity, as well.

Not a lot going on in the nose, with some mild honeyish, lightly toasted malt notes; virtually no hop character is detectable.

Light-to-medium in body with a moderate carbonation feel. Sweet, bready malt starts the show and carries through until the end, with some mild melanoidins and a moderate bittering hop character lending an overall impression of a lightened version of a Munich Helles -- it wouldn't be difficult to see this as a Pre-Prohibition era brew from a German immigrant brewer, making it quite fitting of its near status as such. The finish is semi-dry with a lingering note of sweet bread that is quite clean.

I seem to recall my first experience with this brew as being much more lackluster, but on this second go-around, mid-day when my palate is probably more attuned, it strikes me as a very decent representation of whatever it's aiming to be. Balanced with just enough character to keep it interesting yet not overpowering in any one area, this is what the German brewing tradition is all about. In this reviewer's opinion, Shiner "Bock" should kick the dirt and be replaced with this more characterful and authentic lager.

poured from the 12 oz bottle into my new belgium goblet:

A" super clear, dark honey colored. an inch of wispy head that completely disappeaed within a minute. no lacing AT ALL>

S : thought I read this was dry hopped. not much at all in the aroma dept here....

T no much in this dept either. not BAD, but not good either. light malt taste, only a hint of hoppiness

M: way too foamy- over carbonated. this tastes like a light beer

D: very drinkable. goes down easy, no hi ABV to worry about. no bad taste either. go ahead drink these by the 12 pack. if you cant find any thing better that is!

12 oz bottle poured into pint glass. Part of the Family Pack

A: Clear coppery gold in color, about a fingers worth of head that settles to a small ring with no lacing.

S: Sweet, malty, bready with a hint of fruity hops.

T: Heavy on the malty side, not overly sweet. Pretty bready up front with a hops popping in mid-way through, finishing on the malty side.

M: Kind of light and crisp to start, but gets a little thicker, breadier and smoother as it warms.

D: ABV feels pretty low.... Just enough going on to make it interesting... Nothing crazy new or crazy great. Not a bad session beer.

Not a bad little beer.... so far the Family pack has turned out a few good little beers.

Poured a 12oz bottle into a chilled pint glass.

Color was light amber, had a thin head, left no lacing.
Smells like light malt and kinda fruity.
Tastes like malt, very very light bitterness, but you can hardly taste any hops, there is also a kind of fruit flavor. Kind of disappointing.
Feels and drinks ok, very bubbly.
Overall I didn't really like this beer, kind of tastes like Anchor Steam Beer.

Pours a dull orange color with a finger or two of white head that fades quickly not leaving much lacing intact. Pale malt makes up the bulk of the aroma, not much in the way of hops with maybe just light whiff of caramel underneath the lightly grainy smell. Wow, this one light tasting beer. I really had no idea what it was before opening, but having the name "Reserve" I was expecting a little more flavor. Pale malt, much like the nose, make up most of the flavor profile, followed by a light breadiness, grain, and very little sweetness. There are hops in there somewhere, but they're hard to find. Just a touch of bitterness on the dry, grainy finish. This feel, carbonation just a touch below prickly.

I've had Shiner Bock before, and thought it was ok, so I picked up this mixed 12 pack mostly for the bottle caps for my collection. If this is any indication of what the rest of the pack will be like, I'm not going to be in for a real treat. It is drinkable though, and pretty easy to put back. Just nothing special and still not sure who this supposed to be "Reserve"d for?

Poured into a Sam Adam Perfect Pint glass.
The beer poured a standard light lager look. Golden yellow with a white foam head. Average all around.
The aroma of the beer was lager-clean, with touches sweet caramel malt, floral hops, and banana.
The taste followed the nose. Decent lager clean taste, sweetness from caramel malt, minimal bitterness, sweet fruits and banana. Decent, but nothing outstanding.
A drinkable brew from Shiner. I wouldn't go out of my way to find it, but I wouldn't turn it down if it was offered to me.

A: Pours a pale gold with about a half finger thick white head with moderate head retention.

S: Bready malts and grassy hops with a slightl hint of ripe banana peel with an almost artificial like quality to it (almost like a banana Runt candy).

T: Similar to the nose by being dominated by a well balanced bready malt character and grassy hops. The combination seems to come off a bit sour. As mentioned before there is nothing terribly exciting going on here.

M: Crisp and refreshing. A little on the watery side but I think thats acceptable for the style.

D: A very easy drinker. Not really sure what the ABV is on this (apparently a secret, not sure why they wouldn't put this SOMEWHERE on the label). Goes down smooth and I don't detect any off flavors that make this once unpleasant to drink.

Notes: I think this would be one of the beers that people might knock down just because its easily accessible and a basic lager. I think they hit on the intended style quite well: it has more complexity than an adjunct lager, which I like, and is quite refreshing. A decent lager in my opinion.

12oz bottle obtained via Local BIF from twiggamortis420. Thanks for the opportunity.

Poured into a pint glass, formed a 1" beige head above the clear golden amber brew. Head lasts very well, with lots of chunky lacing. Aroma is balanced but minimal. Taste is moderately sweet to start, balancing bitterness is quick to follow. A bit of earthiness present that isn't quite my bag. Mouthfeel is nice, and drinkability is pretty good. Not a bad representation of the style.

pours out with amber clarity, followed by a thin head which reduces to some extreme sparse lace. munich maltiness is complimented by some very apparent herbal and grassy hoppiness. very nice. taste regresses a bit as the minimal maltiness can't really hold up the base of this beer, therefore not providing a foundation to let the above normal herbal hopping. the minimal, yet detectable hop character gets washed out quickly by a seltzery flavour that masks any back end hop bitterness. sad indeed.
the mouthfeel follows the selzter route and i already noted the thin overall body. drinkability isn't bad, but this beer sure doesn't get me excited to want another one.

another slight twist on the lager style. these shiner beers so far are predictable and boring.

Bottle pours clear golden body with a small white head. Some spotty lace decorates the glass.

Aroma has light spicy and grassy hops, vague fruity esters, and some toasted caramel.

Light medium body has crisp carbonation.

Taste has a bready and sweet grainy caramel maltiness. A subdued hop bitterness struggles to balance. Finishes with a clean crispness.

Pretty nice for the style. I could drink a few of these in the right circumstances.

Has a German lager feel in the nose with faint herbaceous hops and pale grain.

"Hop jacked"? That's funny. This might be a little closer to what Bud used to taste like. A touch sweet, with evasive hops that leave a somewhat soapy aftertaste.

I'm not sure whom they're reserving this for. blase'.

Poured from a 12 oz bottle into nonic pint glass.

A - Kosmos pours somewhere between orange and light copper, completely transparent. Half inch of white head rises with decent retention and some lacing.

S - Simple bready sweetness with grain providing the background. Some metallic and slightly grassy aromas peek in from the hops. Fairly standard; nothing offensive but nothing that stands out either.

T - Slightly deeper than the nose would suggest. A lot of that adjunct-like blanket grain flavor early on, with a touch of honey like sweetness. Light toasted notes mingle with the entrance of the hops mid to late palate. Bits of grass and light earthy tones appear in moderate amounts. Mild bitterness in the finish with a somewhat unpleasant metallic flavor in the aftertaste that lingers for quite a while.

M - Light and refreshing, medium high carbonation, and thankfully out of the watery range.

D - Kosmos is an alright beer, but I doubt it'll wow anyone. Besides being a suitable alternative to BMC stuff, there's nothing outstanding here. A slightly above average beer in a below average style.

Another extra from gramatton, thanks again mna!

Consumed 11/29/2009- from notes.

Brown 12oz bottle poured into a shaker glass.

A- Kind of a washed out clear copper color with a finger and a half white tight bubbled head. Lots of carbination, not much lacing.

S- Lightly floral and grassy, a touch sweet.

T- Alot like the nose, a little extra citrusy flavor in there as well.

M- Light to medium bodied, carbination wasnt too strong.

D- Not normally a style I like but this one wasnt too bad. Could see having a couple at a cook out.

It poured out a dark yellow/orange that made me really unnerved when I first saw it. Wasn't a normal beer color. Smooth texture, and very little bite. Good flavor yet unremarkable. Would drink again, but not actively seek out. The Shiner Bock is a better option from this brewer.

Acquired via trade from gramatton, so a big "Thank you" goes out to him. Poured from a 12oz bottle into a US tumbler pint glass.

A: The beer is a light amber color with a thin white head that slowly and leaves a thin lace on the glass.

S: The aroma is faint but contains light caramelized malts, grain and a touch of hops.

T: The taste starts out bready with flavors of grain and a thin malt character followed by mildly sweet flavors of caramel and tea. There's a very mild hops presence but enough to bring some balance. The after-taste is slightly bready and slightly sweet.

M: Crisp and a little smooth, light-to-medium body, medium carbonation, finish is slightly sticky.

D: A little tasty, goes down ok, not too filling, mild kick, decent representation of style, it's not a bad beer, but there isn't much to it that would make me select it over many others.

Pours pale copper with a modest white head that quickly dissipates to a thin ring.

Aroma is toasted caramel malt. Biscuit, along with mild nut and tropical fruit.

Taste is pale and caramel malt up front. Sweet and grainy with pleasant toasted quality. Light hops bring a 'crispness' to the sour, metallic finish.

Moutfeel is light-medium bodied with a diacetyl slickness.

Worth a try.

A: Poured into a pint glass with about an inch of coarse head. Clear golden color that appears highly carbonated.

S: A vague grapefruit and floral hop aroma. A little sweet and bready.

T: Clean caramel and bread. A little bit of yeast flavor.

M: Light body, high carbonation.

D: Very sessionable. It doesn't really have a standout characteristic, but it's a good overall beer.

A - poured a one finger, bubbly white head that receded into a tight cap with thick lacing.

S - lots of hops, bready with some floral notes.

T - taste follows smell, very hoppy with some clove and other spices.

M - tasted in the back of the mouth with some slight aftertaste. a medium-bodied clean finish. above avg carbonation.

D - a good session quaff. if i see it again, i'll consdier buying it.

Poured from a 12 oz. bottle into a 0.5L Pilsner Urquell-branded pilsner glass.

Appearance: Pours a translucent golden color with LOTS of carbonation bubbles floating to the surface. The head is thick and fizzy and dissipates slowly leaving some lacing.

Smell: Smells of dry hops, kinda reminiscent of a pale ale. A little bit of a citrus fruit smell as well.

Taste: Tastes mildly hoppy, once again kinda like a mild version of a pale ale. Has kind of a sour finish too (sort of confused why this would be).

Mouthfeel: Bready and a little chewy. A little too much carbonation as well.

Drinkability: An exceptional beer from Shiner. Not the best beer I've had but pretty damn tasty. It really hit the spot for me. This is something I would recommend for anyone.
