12 oz bottle was poured into a pint glass.

Appearance: A one finger head was poured that reduced to a thin layer. It is a copper color with good clarity and vision of bubbles coming up through the glass.

Smell: Caramel, toasted malts, pilsner, lager yeast, and grassy notes.

Taste: Same as above with mild bitterness. A bit sweeter than one would like.

Mouthfeel: Light to medium bodied, a little sweet, refreshing, crisp, medium carbonation, and slight bitterness.

Overall: Not a bad pale lager. Reminds me more of a bock than a lager.

From the 12 fl. oz. bottle. Sampled on August 12, 2014.

The pour is yellow to golden-yellow with a fizzy, short lasting white head.

It has a pilsener characteristic on the nose with grainy malts and clean, grassy hops.

The body is light or a little better.

The taste is cleanly balanced grainy malt flavor with a mildly bitter and clean hop finish. Not a lot of lingering but it is semi-dry,

Poured a beautiful, rich golden body with a bit of an orange tint and a thin foam cap of head. For the style it looked fantastic and very inviting. Scents of bready and sweet malt with a medium-low level of floral and herbal hop aromas. A simple, appealing, classic American Lager aroma profile. Very nice. Flavor begins with medium-low sweetness with a nice honey-like character that carries throughout the sip. This is quickly joined by a nice medium-low level of floral hop flavors with medium-low bitterness. In the middle there is a nice mingling of floral and herbal hop flavors mingling with a low level of malt sweetness and slight grainy flavors. Finish is medium-dry with strong floral and herbal hop notes imparting a pleasant medium-low bitterness. Aftertaste is floral and herbal hops and grainy malt. A good, simple, clean, crisp, modestly hopped flavor profile that is refreshing and a good example of an American Lager. Mouthfeel is medium-light bodied with a slightly drying feel and an unfortunately low level of carbonation. It feels fairly good, but more carbonation would be nice. Overall this is a fairly good American Lager. It is pleasantly dry and floral in taste, with a nice floral and malty aroma. The mouthfeel could use a little work, but otherwise this is a solid example of an American classic.

A: The beer poured a nice medium amber, clear with no sediment.

S: This beer has a very pleasant smell, lightness and earthy

T: completely jacked up with hops, distastefully so. I couldn't taste any notes over the insane amount of hops.

O: I did not enjoy this beer, Way too much hops that takes over any flavour profile that may be present, distracting. Will not be purchasing again.

Appearance: Tan, with molasses hints. Clear.

Smell: Sweet malty notes, but not overpowering.

Taste: This is a hoppy lager, but if I hadn't known that I would have sworn that it was a brown ale with a bit of zest.

Mouthfeel: A bit thin, but the end rounds out nicely.

Overall: Enjoyable and very drinkable.

Pours a medium golden color with huge frothy white head that slowly recedes. Aromas of earthy mineral water atop grainy sweet bread. Light earthy hop aroma. The flavor is a bit malty sweet with a light earthy fruitiness. Medium to full body with a moderate level of carbonation. So far I liked this on the most from the mixed 12 pack I got. Its a decent lager, not horribly complex or continental inspired, but drinkable just the same.

Poured from a longneck into a shaker pint. A moderate pour produces about 3/4 inch of frothy white head which settles out into a creamy continuous coating across the top, leaving thick patches of lace on the sides. The color is a pale ruddy golden with carbonation on the high side of moderate.

I get a definite aroma of floral hops, with a distinct light fruitiness in both the aroma and flavor. Light sweetness with clover-like qualities combine with bready malts, spiciness, and just a touch of bitterness on the tongue. Spicy, flower-sweet, and crisp on the finish. Just a touch of lingering bitterness slightly reminiscent of citrus, and maybe just a little dark fruit in the aftertaste.

I'm quickly becoming a fan of this brewery. This beer is light and refreshing but with some definite hop aroma-flavors, and quite unique compared to most American lagers. At a stretch, I would compare it favorably to Grainbelt Premium (which I've not had in awhile)- another lager beer with some hops in it, as I recall. I had tried some Shiner before in Wyoming and thought it tasted either weird (this particular beer) or a little blah (everything else). Perhaps it sat around too long (lots of Bud and Coors drinkers down there).

Appearance (3.00) : Golden yellow body with a lightly carbonated and thin head. Seems fine and fitting.

Smell (3.25) : Oaky, wheaty, grains, and almost smoky smelling to me.

Taste (3.50) : Starts off very hoppy and bitter but is quickly preceded by a darker wheat flavor. Very drinkable.

Mouthfeel (3.25) : Hops leave a bright flavor/feel on my palate, not overly carbonated - just about right.

Overall (3.25): Very drinkable, I would not mind drinking this with my dinner or with friends - and at the end of the day that's what matters right?

Sampling right now on 5/7/14. Bottle chilled down to 36 degrees F in my beer cooler and poured into a 10 ounce glass boot from Frankenmuth, Michigan Barvarian Inn.

P ours a light copper-amber in color with close a finger white head that settles down to the top and sides of the glass. Some spotty lacing is seen. The aroma is of malts with some wheat. The taste is actually better with some good flavor of the malt with a hint of sweetness that finishes slightly tangy from the hops. Different but very drinkable.

Had this one as part of a mixed six from Shiner. Typical of most of the Shiner beers, decent looking beer with okay at best smell. But rather tasty, enjoyed the beer and would certainly drink it again but do not think that I would purchase unless the cost were low.

Surprisingly tasty and refreshing beer. Nice malty aroma. Malty on the palette with a crisp finish, Smooth, malty flavor. Pours a pretty light amber with a substantial head of foam ... nice lacing as the head subsides. It was hard to know what to expect from reading the description on the bottle, although it was interesting reading a little bit of Shiner Brewery lore.

Clear golden orange pour with a minimal white head and light carbonation. Aroma is mainly grain and toast. Medium bodied with lots of grain and malt flavors upfront but there is a nice hop presence on the back end leading to a slightly bitter finish.

A: Light copper golden color. Good carbonation and foam retention. Whitefish foam. Nice looking.

S: Wheat, grain, barley, light malt.

T: Smooth, cool, juicy and mellow. A little grain and sunflower seed. Bright and lively; Slightly sweet and slightly tangy on the finish. Also a longer floral finish of rose water and maybe a little nectarine and peach. Oh so slight on the fruit though.

M: Smooth and mellow. Thin and crisp feeling makes it really refreshing. Almost no dryness, for better or worse.

O: Better than I expected. Nice refreshing German beer. Would be a great hot weather beer or a camping beer.

I had this one from the mixed Shiner 12 pack. Poured into my SA perfect pint, the beer is a darker shade of gold with a decent off-white head.

It has a fresh aroma of grass, malts and some floral hops.

I liked the taste of this one. It is a touch grainy with a hit of caramel. It has a lightly sweet cracker taste with a bit of mild hop bite.

The mouth is decent and the beer would be easy to pair with all but the spiciest food.

I would keep this in my beer fridge if they sold it in 12 packs. I could rotate it with Schlitz and Old Style when I’m looking for a good, simple & decent beer.

Pours a clear dark gold with a foamy bone head that settles to wisps of film on top of the beer. Small dots of lace slowly drip into the remaining beer on the drink down. Smell is of malt, grain, grass, and slight metallic aromas. Taste is much the same with grain and grassy flavors on the finish. There is a mild amount of hop bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a good level of carbonation with a crisp mouthfeel. Overall, this is an above average beer that is easy to drink but nothing too memorable in my opinion.

12 oz. bottle, with no apparent bottled on date present. Acquired as part of the the Shiner family reunion mixed twelve pack. Expectations are about average, given the brewery.

Poured into a Firestone Walker pint glass.

A - Pours a clear golden amber colored body with some bubbles lazily floating topside. About a finger and a half of soft white foam for a head. Maybe just a touch of sediment in there also.

S - The nose is virtually nonexistent. Some stale dusty apples, pilsner malt, amber malt, and some honeyed graham cracker. A pretty weak and pitiful smelling beer.

T - Taste follows the nose: stale dusty apples, coiny metallics, dry grains, some white sugar, and amber malt. This beer definitely suffers from a poor depth of flavor.

M - Feel is quick and clean. Finishes malty with some sticky green apple lingering. Medium bodied with a tad too much carbonation.

Overall, I'm sad to say this is another less than mediocre offering from Spoetzl Brewery. Probably the worst beer I've tried from these guys yet. Bland, nearly flavorless, & definitely not hop forward at all. Not recommended.

Mouthfeel - Medium-bodied with a good amount of carbonation.

Overall - a decent drinking beer; a bit weak on the hops.

Part of the Family Reunion 6'er.. Pours clear golden with a short lasting white head with decent lacing.

Nose is grainy/bready.... almost soda bread combined with a lite grassy hoppiness.

Flavor is all about the cereal grains.. tons of malt/wheat/oats...etc... Balances okay with a lite hop profile.

Carbonation is pretty high... body is a little light.

Okay brew... gets worse as it warms up.. only okay.

3.25 from front to back.

While the majority of my experience with Shiner’s mixed 6-pack was lack-luster, the Kosmos Pale Lager was the epitome of bland. Long story short, its malty taste made it easy to drink, but it lacked any real depth or strong flavor profiles. It simply didn’t stand out.

picked up a variety of shiner beers. poured into to a pilsner glass has a nice yellow color with a head that goes away quickly. grainy in a aroma with a bit of grassy notes. somewhat sweet in flavor. i would like to try this beer again during warmer weather, when it seems the style would probbly suit it better. this beer will probably not sway me from trying other beers from spoetzl

12 fl oz brown glass bottle with typical label art and a branded twist-off pressure cap acquired as part of a Shiner mixed twelve-pack at an HEB Grocery here in Austin and served into an Independence Brewing pilsner glass in me gaff in low altitude Austin, Texas. Reviewed live. Expectations are above average given the brewery.

Brewed with Czech Saaz hops, candi sugar, and Belgian yeast. Best before: 01/26/14.

Served cold - straight from me fridge - and allowed to warm over the course of consumption. Side-poured with standard vigor as no carbonation issues are anticipated.

Reviewed as an American Pale Lager per its identification on Spoetzl's wikipedia; their own site is crap.

A: No bubble show forms as I pour.

Pours a 2.5 finger wide head of white colour. Disappointingly thin. Lacks appealing creaminess. No lacing as the head recedes. Head retention is average - about two minutes.

Body colour is a clear copper of average vibrance. Translucent. No yeast particles are visible.

Sm: Has a rather generic floral hop presence. Pale malts. Pilsner malts. A kiss of crackery malts. Grainy. Some caramalt. Clean and simple.

No yeast character or alcohol is detectable. A generally appealing aroma of average strength, with some surprising spiciness.

T: Body is primarily grainy, with some caramalt and crackery malts lending a bit more complexity. Pale malts and pilsner malts fill out the body. Has a generic floral hop character that doesn't do much for it. "Hop-jacked"? Nah. Painfully simple. No yeast character or alcohol comes through, the the hop notes are rather tame. Even the balance isn't all that great. A bland, boring lager overall.

Not gestalt. Zero depth of flavour. Below average duration and intensity of flavour.

Mf: Smooth and wet. Light, weak, and thin. Not full-bodied. Overcarbonated. Artificial; even a touch syrupy. Somehow, it's also a bit watery at the same time. Doesn't suit the flavour profile well really at all.

Dr: A disappointing offering from Spoetzl. I do have to compliment them on their marketing; the whole "Reserve" shtick coupled with the clever "Hop-jacked" description will sucker many into buying it. At the end of the day, it's a bland lager that isn't worth trying. I definitely won't be getting it again, but I suppose it's drinkable enough.

Poured from a 12 oz bottle into a 14 oz "pint" glass. Pours a orange straw with a small white head that dissipates quickly. Smells of cereal grain and corn, but not that strong. Tastes of sweet grain. Beer is light bodied and heavily carbonated, definitely drinkable. Overall, an above average beer.

This is a very good basic pale lager and a lot more characterful than the flagship Shiner Bock, which to me so far is one of their least impressive beers.

Dark gold, it has medium white head steadily shrinking to foamy ring & wisps.

Aroma is strong, nice pale lager aroma with lots of apple, grain, grass, some herb.

Taste is nice full pale lager character -toastier grain/bread than the norm, sweet breadiness with some honey & apple, nice grassy-slightly herbal hop zing with a little bitterness; good body and full, well-rounded character with creamy feel a bit lively, not at all watery.

A: Amber, clear, moderate carbonation, pours with a finger sized head.

S: Malt, some caramel, didn't get much hops. The smell reminded me a little of the Boston Lager but without the hops and other more obvious smells that the Boston Lager has.

T: The taste on this was very different than the smell. You get a nice kick from the hops and the bitterness is very obvious on the initial taste and the after taste. You get some sweetness on the mid-palate but the flavor is definitely more hoppy than what I was expecting.

MF: The beer has a smooth and somewhat dry finish. The bitter mouthfeel at the end isn't very pleasing.

O: I was really surprised by this beer because of the taste. The nose had me expecting more of a malt flavor and instead gave me a bitter one. While I don't necessarily like bitter beers (like IPAs) I can appreciate hoppy beers such as Laguanitas or Arrogant Bastard because although they are bitter, the pack a lot of flavor that gives your palate a lot to work with. With this beer I felt there should have been more flavor and instead just got a mildly bitter beer with no real malt taste. I say this is an okay beer.
