12 oz twist-off bottle poured into a pilsner glass.
072 11 on the bottom, no info, "Beer brewed with Texas Ruby Red grapefruit juice and ginger."

A - Cloudy golden amber in color and topped by a dense and effervescent off-white head. Good retention but no lace is left over.

S - Distinctive ginger spice overlaps the Ruby grapefruit aroma a touch more than I'd like to see. The ginger mellows out fairly quickly though. Soft wheat and light pale malt mingle nicely in the background.

T - Spicy, mellow ginger notes play off the citrusy grapefruit nicely while soft wheat and pale malt fill in the cracks. The taste is a lot thinner than the aroma makes it out to be unfortunately.

M - Light-bodied and highly carbonated, Ruby Redbird is a touch bitter from the grapefruit and dry too. It could actually use a bit more grapefruit bitterness but more body to balance it out. Like the taste, the feel of this beer is very thin.

O - The fact this beer was brewed with grapefruit juice and ginger really jazzed me up for something exciting; refreshing delicious summer knock-around brew, but the flavor and feel were pretty lacking, unfortunately. Refreshing? Yeah, definitely. Will I pick up some more? Sadly, no. (1,214 characters)

A - A clear, light, and bright amber, akin to lighter beers. High carbonation to begin, lessens as you drink. Head is thin and quickly vanishes.

S - About an equal amount ginger and sweet grapefruit aromas, no hint of alcohol.

T - More ginger than grapefruit. The ginger tingles in your mouth first, with a light and tangy grapefruit finish. I'm surprised (and a little disappointed) there isn't more grapefruit flavor here.

M - Definitely one of the more carbonated beers I’ve tasted. Also very gingery, not unlike ginger ale actually.

O - Ruby Redbird is a fairly good at what it does: refresh. If you enjoy a lighter beer on a hot summer day, this is a nice change of pace. Plenty of flavor, but anyone that doesn't care for ginger should steer clear. (760 characters)

I had this on draught over at Hill Country in midtown last week, and I was able to get a 6-pack of it this weekend for a grilling party where I was able to review it. I poured a bottle into a regular pint glass.

A: Pours a nice bright hazy golden, with a tinge of redness--almost a light, strawberry blonde coloration. Not bad. The beer was highly carbonated and it showed, and there was a one-finger head of big bubbles that quickly went down. Nice and translucent. No lacing. 2.75

S: Nothing spectacular: you do pick up a bit of the bright citrus notes and the spice upon opening, although the crisp grapefruit and spice/ginger flavors that come through very strong in tasting are very muted. The scent does not linger. 2.5

T: Actually quite tasty and refreshing: the grapefruit hits you over the head, and the spice is also very pronounced. You can pick up ginger, but also some other blend (allspice? nutmeg?), and the grapefruit flavors does tend to fade into a general citrus and green brightness as the beer sits. It's very light but not insubstantial, and it all leads to a nice tart/sour flavor that reminded me slightly of a spiced-up Berliner Weisse. Very light on the hops, and very light on the malt also; I have to say that had I not seen that red grapefruit was being used (noted on the bottle), I would have thought white grapefruit. 3.5

M: Very carbonated, which I don't usually like--but it seemed to open up the bright flavors. Had the feel of a spiced Fresca soda, which on a very hot day (outside, grilling) worked very well and was very refreshing. 3.5

O: To me, this is a perfect example of a situational beer--and really, that's all you can expect from any sort of seasonal, let alone a summer seasonal. I found the beer very pleasant for a hot day out by the grill--it's tart and refreshing, the hint of spice went fine with our meats and grilled veggies, and the very light character went down really well. With the nice bright tartness, I didn't miss the hops or malt one bit. As long as you keep your beer cold (the experience went downhill considerably as my beer warmed up), it's a great light choice with some character. For any other day but a hot summer day, I'd give it somewhere in the high 2s, but for a hot summer day it got the job done and then some: 3.75. (2,301 characters)

Fizzy, clear copper.

Smell is a bit worrisome; jarring citrus/lager combination.

Taste is a relief. Crisp and dry. Ginger and grapefruit dominate, malt hard to discern. Pleasant but shallow in spite of multiple flavors.

Imagine a ginger ale shandy, but drier, with a slice of grapefruit. Well-balanced but a little peculiar. Certainly refreshing, though I'd be at a loss what to pair it with. (395 characters)

undated 12 oz bottle served in a pint glass.

Hmmm, beer made with grapefruit ... from a large brewery. I have to admit it occurred to me that Shiner may be replacing some hops with the fruit juice.

Pours way more orange than red; medium amber tone with a slight haze, at least after adding a bit of sediment found at the bottom of the bottle. Visible coarse carbonation. The smallish head dies quickly.

Aroma & Flavor: Red grapefruit may be the featured ingredient, at least in the "Ruby Redbird" name, but ginger take the front seat in both aroma and flavor. Grapefruit, hops and vague spices are also evident. The mild tartness and bitterness are less strong than might be expected.

M: crisp but rather astringent; light/medium body; somewhat aggressive carbonation; dry finish.

O: a flavorful, lower ABV beer that may appeal to those who like ginger and don't mind a rather astringent brew. (902 characters)

Has a very floral and fruity note to it. Appearance is clear golden as expected. Grapefruit bitterness once you taste and that kinda ruins the feel. I know some folks like it so I gave it a decent review to help others along. (226 characters)

The initial head is impressive, but it dies far more quickly than it should. In the end, there's only a thin number of bubbles along the edge of the glass. No lace. The color is light amber and clear.

The smell has a strong ginger bite. It smells like a ginger ale--the alcoholic kind.

Thin bodied with a high carbonation level. The malt base is thin and the aforementioned ginger is present almost as a spicy counterbalance to the light initial flavor. Reminds me of novelty beers--a bit of a one-trick pony. (517 characters)

24oz bottles -- buy 2 get one free Shiner promotion at the local Publix Jupiter,Fl.,, including their wheat "belgian" (i doubt it)
served around 65° , has good carbonation ,nose light malt, citrus nose,
yea ginger is in here a little on the finish
The finish is actually of coriander when beer warmed up some.
I know what citra and similar hops taste like, not citra hops, more like the citrus pulp residue left over from juicing citrus in the beer.
Sam Adams and Oregon brewer's successfully use citra hops, but not in this beer.
I have made ale with citra, cascade hops naaa

burrrrpppp

ah yes good for chili like a few suggested good for cooking..not overwhelming however
I dont mind adding my own citrus such as lime in an iced beer when making Michelados on a hot day, this would make a good Michelados.

Having been out to Fredericksburg, kerrville and sampled the local ales, a Munich ale it isn't claims full body Munich ale .. no.
Served cold it's ok not awfull, just ok.

Pretty Lite beer for a German style, well to serve the yuppie larvae all i can figure. Need some good barley malted ales here cut back on the rice and corn malts and you'll have a winner. (1,176 characters)

hazy amber pour with a giant release sound of carbonation when twisting off, yet no visible head. smells of bread, lemongrass, grapefruit. a tart funky grapefruit taste with a slightly bitter finish. hints of bread, and grass.

the mouthfeel is perfect for a summer beer. seltzer-like carbonation, light body.

overall, this is nice for a one-off. i don't think i'd ever get a 6-pk of this (though i did last year but only drank half), even though it's probably the most refreshing beer i've ever had. could use a bit more definition in the appearance, and the smell/taste may be fine where it is. it's pretty subtle for a grapefruit beer (expected it to be IN YOUR FACE) (671 characters)

On-tap 8/17/2014 at Battleship Brewhouse in Fall River, MA, served in a US tumbler pint glass.

A: The beer is a light gold color, with a very thin white head that fades very quickly and leaves very little lace on the glass.

S: The aroma smells a lot like ginger ale up front, then the grapefruit scent comes in along with some light malts.

T: The taste starts out with flavors of grapefruit and spices, but mostly ginger. The malt character is very thin and there is very little hops presence. The after-taste is slightly spicy and slightly sweet.

M: Crisp and a little smooth, light body, medium-to-high carbonation, finish is clean.

O: A little flavorful, goes down ok, not filling at all, very mild kick, decent variation of style, this is just a mediocre beer at best. (777 characters)

My father-in-law brought me most of a 12-pack of this beer. In all honesty, that was a red flag for me. i wondered if he had a couple, realized it wasn't that great, and wasn't broken-hearted to part with it. After he told me grapefruit, I was a bit skeptical, but kept an open-mind, and I have to say, I enjoy this beer alright.

A: Pale, light golden color; transparent; looks a bit like a cider; absolutely no head or lacing

S: fragrant ginger but not too over the top, slight citrus undertones

T: sweet and tart balanced with spice and bitterness

M: light in body; very little carbonation; perfect i think for a hot, muggy day

O/D: This beer may not be for everyone, but it's an interesting and I think enjoyable combination of grapefruit and ginger. Better than expected. (780 characters)

Poured from a brown 12 oz. bottle. Has a golden color with amber hues and a 1/2 inch head. Smell is dominated by grapefruit. Taste is tart, grapefruit, a touch of malt, not terrible but not really my thing. Feels medium bodied in the mouth and overall is a decent beer. (269 characters)

picked this up at Giant Beer garden & eatery in a mix-a-six poured chilled in a teku.

The color is deep copper with orange and bronze hues with quick to collapse white foam. The smell is peculier but not bad ...it smells like ginger ale -spicy and sweet with tropical accent. The feel is mildly carbonated with low bitterness and mildly sweet with a semi-dry texture and light body overall.

The flavor has a slight grapefruit flavor with mild tangy citrus tinge and light rind taste with some mild nuttiness of malt, again it seems to follow the nose, not great but not altogether revolting it just is...slight grapefruit soda essence comes to mind, but not sweet and not really bitter either. The overall take is if you really love grapefruit you may dig this, but it is more of a novelty than a serious beer with grapefruit added. (837 characters)

Riedel tulip

A: Slightly pink, light orange color. Initially I got a thin layer of bright white. Then nothing. Carbonation but not head.

S: Ginger and fruit. Grainy grain.

T: Up front some spice. That ginger I assume. Sharp tart grapefruit. Clean dry finish.

M: Light bodied. (296 characters)

Best thing about this is its color. Gorgeous ruby red with tiny tiny head. Zero lacing. Actually tastes quite nice, fruity. Grapefruit and citrus notes predominate. Great for beach or hot summer day when you want something light and cold. (243 characters)

Poured from a bottle into a standard pint glass.

A: Sort of a hazy brownish gold color. No head or lacing.

S: Grapefruit, citrus.

T: Bitter but strangely nice and refreshing. Grapefruit is the most prominent w/some citrus.

M: Not much body or carbonation.

O: I'm kind of torn on how to wrap this up. When I break it apart into the above sections nothing really stands out as great, but overall I thought it worked in a weird way. Especially when this beer is served ice cold on a hot, humid, summer day (which was when I tried it). Sort of a polarizing beer, as opinions on it were divided right down the middle at the BBQ I had it at. But I'll definitely pick some up next summer to give it another shot. (711 characters)

The beer pours a clear golden-orange color with a white head. The first thing I get in the aroma is some ginger, but I then get some grapefruit notes. The flavor is more of the same. I get some slightly tart grapefruit, ginger and bready malt. Refreshing. Medium mouthfeel and medium carbonation. Not a great beer, but this is better than some other Shiner beers. (363 characters)

A golden color and a little hazy. The head that dies immediately. No head retention and no lacing. Lots of bubbles let you know that the beer is still alive though.

Sweet, citrusy and a good helping of ginger. It's actually a pretty nice aroma.

Thin and spritzer like. All of the carbonation and sweet citrus flavor up front almost makes you think you're drinking a soda but then you get a mix of grapefruit and ginger. Those flavors are then joined by a light malt base but it's the ginger that rides your tongue all the way through the finish.

It's very refreshing but it barely feels like I'm drinking a beer. I think I could get something very similar by mixing ginger ale and grapefruit juice. It's very refreshing and good for the summertime heat, but it needs to look and feel like a beer. (800 characters)

A: The beer is clear yellow in color and has a moderate amount of visible carbonation. It poured with a finger high off white head that died down rather quickly, leaving only a thin collar around the edge of the glass.
S: Light aromas of ginger are present in the nose.
T: The taste is somewhat similar to a mixture of Fresca and ginger ale (with some malts) and has notes of ruby red grapefruit and ginger, the latter of which lingers through the finish. No bitterness is detectable.
M: It feels light-bodied and slightly watery on the palate with a moderate amount of carbonation.
O: This 'beer' is really easy to drink, but it's not interesting enough for me to want more than one of these where I would call it sessionable. (727 characters)

A: Pours a crystal clear medium golden yellow in color with light amounts of visible carbonation and some copper highlights. The beer has a quarter finger tall fizzy off-white head that quickly reduces to a tiny patch of extremely thin film and a very thin ring at the edges of the glass. Minimal amounts of lacing are observed.

S: Light to moderate aromas of lemon and ginger.

T: Upfront there is a light to moderate flavor of pale and caramel malts. That is followed by moderate flavors of ruby red grapefruit, lemon, and ginger which lingers through the finish. Minimal amounts of bitterness are present and fade very quickly.

M: Light bodied with a moderate amount of carbonation. Thin and watery.

O: This is easy to drink but reminds me more of a Radler than anything else. I don't think I enjoyed this one. As another reviewer stated, it reminds me of Fresca combined with ginger ale more than it does a beer. (919 characters)

I saw this one on tap during my last visit to Houston. I like some of Shiner’s offerings so I thought I would give this one a try.

Served in a standard shaker, the beer is copper with minimal head. It has a nose of citrus, sugars and malts.

Taste starts sweet. Red grapefruit, minimal hops some grainy malt. Beer turns citrus puckering midglass. In fact it becomes more unbalanced as it warms.

Mouth is bordering thin but zippy carbonation makes it average. Glad I tried it, would only repeat on occasion. (511 characters)

Gold in color. Light tinge of ruby/amber. Goes flat in under a minute.

Big ginger in the nose with a citrusy backdrop. Notes of treacle and faint grapefruit.

Tastes a little like ginger ale. Prominent ginger note comes off very refreshing. Faint citrus notes. Grapefruit is actually a bit of a stretch. A little minty in the finish. I think that's a hop contribution.

Higher carbonation. Weak, because the beer doesn't hold its own in the body.

Refreshing, I guess. Totally one-note. Works like an alcoholic ginger ale. That's pretty more much it. (551 characters)

Overall not a bad beer but wasn't one of my favorites. The appearance was light yellow with a nice head, sniffed and found an abundance of grapefruit in the nose. The taste was a little odd with a quick yet intense grapefruit flavor, but then it immediately was gone and overtaken by a sweet, almost molasses, flavor that tasted like breakfast sausage. Interesting but not the best I've tried. (393 characters)

Clear gold in color, with a thin, quickly fading head of white foam.
Aroma-Juicy ruby red grapefruit
Taste-Faint malt note, thin bodied, almost watery. Muted grapefruit flavor. A bit of a letdown to be sure. I had high hopes for this one on a 90 degree day but it was not to be. But hey, a little more carbonation and body to fill this beer out and we could be talking a great summer brew here. But until then, my score must stand. C'mon Shiner! (500 characters)

Its not too sweet, not to fruity. The grapefruit is there but its not too strong, the ginger is slightly watered down. The smell is there more than anything.

its a good summer beer from what I've had, grant it I haven't had too many grapefruit beers. Overall, I enjoyed it. (290 characters)
