12oz bottle poured into a shaker pint glass. No obvious date on the bottle - there appears to be a batch stamp but the numbers are meaningless to me.

Appearance: Solid golden orange with a hint of haze to it. Initial white foam upon poured died to nothing - no foam at all. Nice color, but the lack of lacing takes away from it all.

Smell: Very strong ginger smell along with some earthy notes and just a tiny hint of grapefruit. Interesting, but a bit odd as well.

Taste: Solid ginger hit right at the front - like taking a sip of Blenheim Ginger ale. Immediately after the ginger there is that tart grapefruit citrus, but that passes quickly and moves into a earthy spicy finish. It's a very crisp and almost, but not quite, bone dry mouth puckering finish.

Mouthfeel: Super fizzy and highly scouring carbonation on the palate. Very much like ginger ale. If there is anything else in there besides the carbonation I sure can't find it.

Overall: It's like someone combined citrus and a spicy ginger ale - if there is a beer in here it is well hidden. I can see the refreshing aspect to this beer though - especially when the beer is cold and crisp. Definitely would wake you up on a lethargic summer day. But perfect summer beer? No, not quite. Interesting to try but I can't see myself deliberately trying it again.

Poured from the bottle a clear amber orange with a thin off-white head.

Aroma was primarily ginger with a hint of light fruit.

Like the aroma, ginger is the primary taste. I note a hint taste of grapefruit and light cracker.

Lighter bodied and a bit dry with a moderate carbonation.

This was more of a ginger beer than anything. I wish the grapefruit had been more bold. Probably won't have again.

A - Poured out a clear, orange/amber color with a small, off-white head of bubbly foam. It left minimal lacing.

S - It smelled of ginger. And not much else.

T - I got some of the ruby red grapefruit tart flavors, but lots of ginger, too.

M - It was crisp, sharp and smooth. A light bodied beer with a fairly dry finish.

O - Not a huge ginger fan. I need it toned down and the grapefruit cranked up.

pours out a clear dark gold colour with athin fizzy head reducing to nothing in a heartbeat. fruity aroma...of course there is grapefruit, then a mix of malty sugar and other sweet, slightly tropical smells. flavour follows suit with fruity overtones of grapefruit and sweet malts. pretty dry in the finish and there is the slightest hint of some herbal and astringent hopping. crisp and clean mouthfeel with a bottomless body. i could pound the hell out of this on a hot day, like today.

overall...another shiner product that appeals to the least sophisticated of us...BUT...this has a certain appeal to those of us that enjoy and like marguiritas, etc. on hot days and in the sun. a summer quencher for sure that can be drank right out of the bottle with no regrets.

the label does say serve ice cold on a hot day...fair enough!!

Let me start off by saying that I'm not a big fan of grapefruit, but my wife is. So, my review of this has this as a starting point. To start off, it had a nice looking color in the glass but not much in the way of head. You can definitely smell the ginger and grapefruit. It's a very interesting conversation. The taste is an interesting mix of grapefruit, ginger, and beer. I can't say that I preferred the taste, but my wife loved it.

A: Clear amber color. No head or lacing.

S: Ginger, citrus and malty grains.

T&M: Very thin and highly carbonated. Slightly bitter up front, more of that grapefruit bitterness. Fades with a nice ginger flavor.

Okay and great to drink in the summer. Not much of a beer though, more of a flavored malt beverage.

A- light amber with no head. Therefore, no lacing. There is a small amount of visible carbonation. It looks relatively lifeless.

S- very very light. Some ginger and yeast...not much else.

T- warming ginger spice, some grapefruit. Yeasty finish. Once again, this one falls short.

M- light bodied, prickly carbonation.

O- I was expecting strong ginger and acidic grapefruit... I received none of that. Not good.

A: Poured from a bottle to a pint glass. Had a golden brown color and a completely clear texture. There was a half inch of foamy, quickly dissipating head. Zero lacing.

S: A somewhat subdued aroma of grapefruit and ginger.

T: Tasted of ginger up front, with grapefruit and malt in the finish. Fruit/vegetable beers aren't the most complex brews by nature, but this one doesn't do that reputation any favors.

M: A solid amount of carbonation with a slick finish. Light-bodied.

O: While not a completely horrid beer, it certainly doesn't stick in your mind after you've finished it.

A: pale to medium amber beer in a pint - very brief finger of off-white head left no trace and no lace

S: grapefruit - the fruit not the hop aroma - right up front - was interesting, but also conflicted with the malt and hop aromas

T: its beer with red grapefruit juice in it - take it for what you will - I served it ice cold, as suggested on the label, but I didn't notice any perceptible changes for the better or worse as it warmed

M: thin, crisp, light, sparkly

O: perhaps its just not my cup of tea, and I do enjoy grapefruit juice, and i obviously enjoy beer, but this marriage didn't appeal to me.

A; A not unattractive beer with a deep golden body and light beige, tightly bubbled head. Brilliant Clarity and pretty good active carbonation, though head retention is poor.

S: Grapefruit, but not hoppy. Closer inspection gives some amber malts, but a displeasing...something. Musty?

T: Hmmm, yeah. No. Tastes more like rind than fruit. No classic off flavors, just a poor blending on ingredients I think.

M: Good, just what I would expect from a summer beer. Appropriate carbonation for fruity styles as well.

D; Nope.

A pretty average summer beer. Poured into a flute, there was some initial carbonation with lots of bubbles and a fizzy white head. The head died down pretty quick and left no lacing on the glass. The reddish copper color ws nice though.

Smell was pretty faint, some ginger and a little grapefruit.. Taste was a little stronger, the grapefruit came out more and the ginger was subdued enough not to be annoying. No strong flavors though, not much in the way of malt. The bitterness was provided by the grapefruit.

Mouthfeel is light, with a little kick from the ginger and grapefruit.

In all, a pretty average drink. I could not see myself doing pitchers of this even on a hot day.

Poured from 12 oz bottle into pint glass

Appearance: pours a 2" pillowy white head that falls with some nice lacing left behind. Color is a clear amber with moderate streaming carbonation.

Aroma: gingerbread cookie dough is the dominate smell. Also a bit of lemony citrus.

Mouthfeel: light and quite tangy with a somewhat dry finish.

Flavor: ginger is a bit more subdued than in the aroma, blends nicely with caramel malts and the citrus flavor.

Overall: Definitely a unique beer. It is quite refreshing on a hot summer day. Not something I would buy or drink regularly, but enjoyable none the less.

Clear amber with almost no head or lacing. Smell is grapefruit ginger and light malt.
Taste is lightly bitter with red grapefruit ginger and light bready malt. Grapefruit tastes more bitter than I expected. Maybe some grapefruit zest included?
Mouthfeel was light with low carbonation. No crispness or zing. Overall it tastes like a beer with a shot of pink grapefruit added. The ginger was in the background mostly with a bit of spice in the finish.

Oddly compelling, Shiner quenches the thirst of Texas with light bodied ale that's jazzed up with grapefruit and ginger. This strange dialogue somehow works out is highly refreshing form.

Medium golden in color, the beer shows bright clarity to highlight its dance of carbonation that races to the surface. Once there, a cottony head emerges only to fall back into the beer soon after. Its a zesty and somewhat fizzy appearance that lacks any lacing at all.

Ginger spice dominates the nose. It tingles and tantalizes the olfactory senses with a backdrop of citrus, apples, and light caramel. A scent of bread crust can be uncovered after the nose becomes accustomed to the more prominent fruit and spice.

Again, getting past the peppery ginger focal point- the acidic taste of grapefruit, lemons, apples and white grapes provide both an estery complement to go along with citrus fruit additions. Supported by the taste of toasted grain and seemingly "Grapenuts" cereal, its a husky almost rye-like underpinning. Lightly hopped, the beer finishes with sassafras-type minty and citrusy bitterness.

Light and zesty in texture, at least while the bubbles are present. The beer feels playfully like champagne and gives the beer a scrubbing refreshment. But those bubbles are short lived and the beer falls quite flat very quickly. This reveals a watery finish that's full of mineral flavor and grain-derived astringency. The spice of ginger saves the beer by covering up its grain flaws with warmth.

Although Ruby Redbird doesn't appear to be the best formulated beer by any means, Its odd recipe comes together in much the same way that creative mixed drinks to. I just wish that the spice and fruit had more malt support

Poured from a 12 ounce bottle into a pilsner glass. No visible best before date.

A: Head dissipates before it can even form, leaving nothing on the top. A view bubbles inside a clear, dull golden beer.

S: The ginger overwhelms almost everything. Seriously, it smells like ginger ale. Underneath, the nose catches a glimpse of citrus and maybe hops, it's hard to tell.

T: The grapefruit does serve to partially balance the gingerness, but most of the flavour and feel still comes from the sharp, pervasive spice. Otherwise, the beer is watery (to avoid the pejorative, perhaps I should say 'quenching') and plain. The label claims Citra and Cascade hops, but I can't find them, unless it's the within the gingery dryness right at the end. More likely, they're buried under the copious amounts of (pleasant) grapefruit. I still think this beer tastes like a soft drink -- lemon-lime ginger ale?

M: Well done. Both interesting and thirst-quenching. Nice on a hot day. I suspect this beer is meant to be drunk from the bottle; perhaps I would find it improved if the emphasis were on feel than smell and taste.

O: An interesting beer, if not a good one. I didn't mind drinking it. I wouldn't have another, but I wouldn't say anything against ordering one.

My wife picked up a six pack of this one earlier today, and temptation got the best of me. Poured a translucent amber color with an instantly disappearing tan head. Aromas of tart grapefruit, lemon zest and tea. Light bodied and crackly, with flavors of grapefruit, lemon zest and a little ginger.

Poured into a balloon glass.

Look: Clear copper. Off white head recedes to absolutely nothing, no lacing.

Aroma: Spicy grapefruit, ginger notes. Little in the way of any malts or hops.

Taste: Very spiced, almost tastes like some bad pumpkin ales I've had. More ginger than grapefruit, but the grapefruit adds nice citrus.

Mouthfeel: Bright, carbonated.

Overall: Refreshing, but more of a novelty. Drinks too carbonated, like a soda. Glad I only bought a single bottle.

Appearance is orange and brown in the glass. Soda pop carbonation that due palates hickory to nothing. Mouthfeel is also somewhat flat. Smell is not remarkable - smells like an ale with a hint of citrus. Grapefruit is present on the taste. It is upfront and provides a semi interesting twist to this beer. Probably it's best feature is the low ABV and sessionable nature. Best for a hot summer day served real cold.

12 oz bottle poured into a pint glass.

Pours a sickly off yellow color with a finger of foam that disappears almost instantly. No lacing whatsoever. Does not looks very nice. Aroma is strong with ginger... reminds me of sushi.

First sip is just a strong ginger flavor. Very lightly carbonated, so it tastes kind of stale as well. I will say it is refreshingly dry, but the flavor itself is pretty unappealing. Thin bodied.

All I really get is the ginger flavor. No sweetness or anything else appealing. I wouldn't get this again.

A: Clear orange/gold color. Poured a 1 finger fizzy white head that immediately dissipated to a ring of bubbles around the inside edge of the glass. Decanted lightly. No lacing.

S: Ginger and grapefruit. Just like the bottle said. that's it.

T: Sweet malt character more prominent right up front. Quick transition to ginger and grapefruit in the middle. Both linger, somewhat crisply, in a very muted bitter. Certainly not clean, but relatively crisp and refreshing.

M: Very light body. Moderate to ample carbonation. Actually, I think the carbonation "saved" this one a bit in cleaning-up the ginger and grapefruit. Relatively refreshing.

O: Pretty one-dimensional; actually two - ginger and grapefruit. Easy to drink, but why why?

Pours a hazy dark orange with a foamy khaki head that settles to wisps of film on top of the beer. No lacing on the drink down. Smell is of malt, grain, ginger, and grapefruit juice aromas. Taste is much the same with ginger and grapefruit flavors on the finish. However, when the beer warms up the flavors turn metallic and salty. There is a mild amount of earth bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a slightly crisp mouthfeel. Overall, this is a pretty poor beer that smells like a solid ginger beer soda, but has a shift in flavors that make it hard to drink when it warms up.

Doesn't look like much, but it's not a total loss. Dark golden straw colored, think Bud only darker. There is the faintest of red mixed in. The head is white and you can hear the bubbles start to explode immediately. The head is thick, and gone, in no time.

I like the smell. Candy notes envelope the nose almost as soon as the cap is off the bottle. Has more of a cherry smell than anything.

Has a fruit-ish flavor to it, but not something I'd guess to be red grapefruit. It's clearly citrus of some sort, but it tastes like juice concentrate more than anything.

Little feel. Watered down. Slight carbonation. Tart. Almost a medicinal feel. Some heat on the throat in the swallow, but not sure where it comes from because it's not alcohol and it's not very hoppy (it's the ginger as it turns out).

Another swing and miss by the Shiner folks. Not something I'd want to drink again, even on a hot day as the bottle suggests. No character.

P- Wegmans in Mechanicsburg, PA

A- clear light copper tone color. Minimal head and little lacing. No carbonation either.

S- ginger, ginger, and more ginger. Almost like smelling ginger ale soda. I don't get any grapefruit at all.

F- umm...its like drinking ginger ale with some grapefruit juice thrown in for good measure. The malts are weak and give no definition to the beer.

M- crisp, smooth and light bodied. Ginger Ginger Ginger

O- its good if you like drinking ginger ale with alcohol. I wont be having another.

It tastes like Ginger ale with a hint of grapefruit juice. Not bad for someone who doesn't really like that hoppy beer taste but wants something summery. I had this mid July with chicken wings, I'd say that's the best pairing for this beer. Nothing to write home about but refreshing with a light dinner.

Summer is a tough season for me with beers. Refreshment is generally not my main reason for drinking beer, flavor is. So summer seasonals, with a few exceptions, usually leave me wanting. Despite trying something different, Shiner Ruby Redbird is no exception.

Appearance was light golden blonde with the tiniest hint of amber/red. Little to no head retention.

Smell was heavy on the ginger with hints of citrus, more lemon than grapefruit. Also a bit of a must I usually associate with a macro lager.

Taste was that of a dry, slightly sweet ginger ale that someone had squeezed a lemon wedge in. There was very little hint that you were drinking a beer and not a slightly alcoholic ginger ale. Grapefruit was nowhere to be found.

Mouthfeel was light and heavily carbonated with tiny bubbles.

Overall, while it tasted fine, it did not taste like beer. Shiner attempted to do something pretty interesting here, and while a crisp lager with notes of ginger and grapefruit still appeals to me, this unfortunately, is not that beer.
