From BeerAdvocate magazine Issue #62 (Mar 2012):
LOOK: Clear garnet
SMELL: Caramel, toasted bread, spicy rye, herbal tea, clean
TASTE: Smooth, creamy, clean, malty, mild caramel, toasted grain, spicy rye, modest hopping, semidry grainy finish
Hands-down one of the most quaffable rye beers to date. So why is Shiner not in all 50 states yet? Straight-up great beer with no frills, even though they are going out on a limb with the rye. Great to see where a lager can go.

The beer pours a golden-brown color with a white head. The aroma is full of rye and a little bit of toffee malt -- about what I expected. The flavor is more of the same. I get a lot of rye and some toffee and bread from the malt, as well as a hint of orange citrus. Medium mouthfeel and medium carbonation. Decent, but definitely nothing to seek out.

12 oz bottle served in snifter.
Poured a very dark brown color; clear with nice orange-ruby highlights. The off-white head is not very durable and lonly a few spots of lace are left on the glass. A thin ring endures quite a bit longer. Looks promising, but the aroma is very faint.
S: The medium-dark roasted malts and some spice from the hops and/or rye are just barely detectable.
Taste: sweet and bitter are balanced; more flavor than the aroma suggests, but still by no means a strongly flavored beer. Nice level of spiciness from the hops and rye. The quality of flavor is very good, so the limited strength and brief aftertaste are disappointing.
M: Medium-light bodied; crisp feel from moderate+ carbonation and rye; nicely dry from mid-taste to the finish.
Overall: a pleasant surprise; probably the best I've had from this brewer, although that's faint praise. 3.75

12oz bottle poured into a snifter. Bottled November 9th 2013.
A: Pours a clear dark ruby brown with an off white head. Not very much visible carbonation. Head dissipates to a thin film in a minute or so leaving a few spots of lacing.
S: Bit of a sweet aroma with a bready aspect to it. Hints of dark fruit and also a moderate yeastiness. Light chocolate as it warms.
T: Solid flavor on this one. The chocolate malts come through nicely and add depth. Carmel sweetness is controlled and doesnt overpower. Great malt backbone.
M: Medium body with moderate carbonation. Has a bit of a creamy aspect to it which is pleasant. Isnt overly sticky on the finish.
Overall I'm impressed with this one however am very biased toward rye beers. Comes through as a full flavored beer. Worth a try, just wish it came as a stand alone offer.

From the Shiner Family Tradition 12-pack. I split it with my brother-in-law on a recent trip to Texas.
I drank this one from the bottle while watching football. Some caramel, toffee, and chocolate can be smelled from the top of the bottle. The flavor is a balance of sweet and mildly spicy. The chocolate and caramel are strong and sweet up front followed by a smooth, mild spicy rye in the finish. The mouthfeel is medium bodied and smooth with a moderate amount of carbonation.
For a Shiner beer this one is more complex, rich, and balanced than I have come to expect. The chocolate rye malt really is a great ingredient here. I wouldn’t mind having more of these, but I wouldn’t buy the family tradition 6- or 12-pack to get to it.

A- Bottle to mug, reddish brown color, light tan head that doesn't stay, leaves some lacing.
S- Fruit, sweet
T- Little bitter, metallic, spice
M- Medium bodied, goes down smooth
O- Not a bad beer, something different that I hadn't tried before. Got this in a reunion sixer, review from my notes. I would drink it again.

Pours out to a thin white head and medium brown color. Crystal clear. Aroma is toasty malt, and a hint of brown sugar, cocoa and maple. Flavor is sweet grain oriented with nice toasty and nutty (pecans?) notes a nice carbonic bite at the end. Mouthfeel is light and slightly sticky. This is a unique brew that I really enjoy.

Poured from a brown 12 oz. bottle. Has a very dark brown color with a 1/2 inch head. Smell is mild, some rye. Taste is roasted malts, rye, a slight bitterness, decent but nothing special. Feels medium bodied in the mouth and overall is a pretty good beer.
