Poured from a longneck into a shaker pint. A moderate pour produces a good billowy tan head that stick around for a little while, then dissipates into a solid ring with strands and islets of foam. The beer is a yellowish and red amber-brown with moderate carbonation.

A good hint of cherry is present in the aroma. The flavor is of bready malts (rye bread-yes), with some spicy, molasses-like flavors and a slightly tangy fruitiness. Medium bodied, tingly mouthfeel with lingering earthy bitterness and a little bit of that cherry again.

This beer is quite flavorful. It was not quite what I expected, with the dark color, medium body and complex flavor. Most other rye beers I've tried to date (not many, and all American) tend to be lighter in body, and often with more carbonation. One I tried at a brewery in Wyoming was light bodied and insanely carbonated. Perhaps the brewery is striving for a traditional Roggenbier? Purchased as part of a variety six pack for about $8.50.

Appearance (3.00) : Small off-white head, red-amber almost cherry-brown body.

Smell (3.00) : Very clear notes of barley and a sweet nuttiness, I'm thinking almonds and sunflower?

Taste (3.25) : Caramel malts with barley.

Mouthfeel (3.00) : Not sure how I felt about the carbonation, but overall a very clean, refreshing feel.

Overall (3.00): A very okay beer, and an especially good one for the price, in my opinion.

Picked up a variety six of Shiner pretty much out of curiosity, wanted to see what they could do as I had not had any of their beers. This one surprised me, pretty good looking beer but smell had me worried. But surprised me as it was tasty. Overall not a special beer but one I would enjoy again.

Shiner Ryes & Shine is quite a good/great beer... Surprisingly good. I Mean Grrreat!!!!

Ryes has a nice Caramel colour, decent head about 1" and has semi-smoked overtones.
The Rye is subtle, but you know it's there with the slight sweet/dill taste.
I think this would pair quite well with a Reuben with a Stone Ground Mustard.
I must confess, this beer makes me hungry!!!

Thank you, Shiner! Spoetzl Brewery in Beautiful Texas!!!! ..I've never tasted a rye beer, but with this entry, I really don't care to as this beer is Excellent!!!
