Purchased: 6-pack from Kroger

A: Mostly clear amber beer with frothy off-white head of 3 fingers. Head retention is very good; lacing is good as well.

S: Aromas have an earthy hop character supported by some caramel malts.

T: Taste features a moderate bitterness from the hops and a little bit of malt sweetness. Also has some vegetable flavor as an off-taste.

M: Crisp mouthfeel from the high carbonation and medium body. The finish is bitter and hoppy, but not too much so, with some lingering vegetable aftertastes.

O: Overall a basic but refreshing pale ale with some minor flaws. Not bad

A-copper with a decently thick white head that leaves no lacing

S-floral, malty-it has a distinct nose that is more akin to an English Pale Ale than American

T-a total mess of flavors consisting of spices, floral notes, and a soapy flavor with a lingering earthiness. It really tastes more like an EPA than APA as the nose suggested. Honestly, this is borderline undrinkable when poured into a glass, but can be tolerated straight from the bottle.

M-slick and somewhat chewy.

D-I almost poured this out.

Overall, I will never drink this again.

Shiner Pale Ale has some golden edging but, on the whole, does not shine nor is it all that pale, relatively speaking. A caramelized amber tone, it is sparklingly clear but can look rather brownish, especially away from the light. Its surface has as much head as the Gobi dessert does grass.

The yeast has more presence in the aroma than either the malts or hops - acceptable in Belgian offerings but disappointing in an American-style. I like floral and fruity qualities in these kinds of beers but this one has very little (if any) of those kinds of aromatics.

A bit of toffee is also noted, which, combined with the esters, reminds me of typical British ales. That impression is compounded in the mouthfeel as carbonate-rich water minerals make for a dry and chalky texture (especially in the finish once the caramelly sponge cake flavours fade).

The flavour also features a moderate level of fruitiness. This taste - primarily the product of yeast esters, though there's a trace of lemony citrus from the hops - is too vague to convincingly resemble any one thing and has an ambiguous orchard fruit character. The malts also have a very generic taste that isn't overly impressionable.

Admittedly, how styles are defined and categorized can sometimes be rather subjective, but to brew a 'classic American Pale Ale' using German malt (Munich) and English hops (Goldings) isn't the way I'd go about it. This drinks so much like a British pale ale that it probably refers to soccer as 'football' and calls elevators 'lifts'.

Shiner Wild Hare Pale may, as the brewery advertises, have 'assertive aromas' and 'hoppy brightness' to drinkers that have only ever known commercial lagers. But anyone who's accustomed to truer, better brewed examples of the style will find it unsatisfying and lackluster. That was my impression anyhow. Not something I care to drink again.

A - dark orangish amber with a thick, soft cap of somewhat loose head that fades after 30 seconds

S - caramel malt, some bread, batter sweetness, some citrus

T - citrus, caramel malt, faint sweetness, hints of batter, alcohol

M - medium bodied, well carbonated

This is quite a nice APA from the Shiner brand. It may not be an intensely hoppy APA that everyone loves to rave about, but this is a solid, highly drinkable, flavorful, balanced beer that has just enough hop character to keep you interested and a solid malt backbone. This is a beer I could definitely knock back.

Appearance: Hazy toned copper body adorned by a massive, sense, off-white head, which retains well. Belgian-style lacing adorns the glass walls. Clouds of small carbonation drift lazily to the surface.

Aroma: Prominent toasted malt, caramel, and grassy and citric hops. The aroma seems quite well-balanced.

Taste: Opens with toasted malts, soon followed by caramel, and a mild wave of herbal and grassy hops. The hop and malt flavors compliment each other nicely throughout the taste. The hops offer a mild herbal flourish at the end of the taste.

Mouth feel: Smooth, soft, quite pleasant.

Drinkability/notes: A very pleasing, well-balanced example. Although the label notes "103", denoting that this is a one-year production produced three years after Shiner's centennial, it seems worthy of being added to the permanent offerings.

Presentation: Packaged in a twelve-ounce brown glass bottle with a twist-off crown, served in a New Belgium Brewing chalice.

Sourcing: Purchased at HEB in Texas in July of 2013 for $6.99/six-pack plus tax.
