This crisp, bohemian-style lager was first brewed in Shiner way back in 1909. The early bottles of Premium proudly displayed a cotton ball on the label - a tribute to the hardworking Czech and German immigrants who farmed cotton around the region. After a long day in the fields these farmers often found a cold bottle of Shiner Premium waiting on a fence post, left there by our own Kosmos Spoetzl. It’s no wonder that Premium soon became known as the local favorite, and now it’s back. Reintroduce yourself to Shiner Premium - a beer that will take you back and treat you right. Prosit!

Pours nice bubbly straw, light gold hue. Head doesn’t last. Smells nice. Soft bready malt and lightly sweet corn. Hops is light. Feels smooth soft with a light medium body. The malt and corn sit softly on your palate and the light hops round it out. It’s not overly flavorful, but it is multigrain malty which is a good thing. It’s refreshing, crisp, had good soft flavors and the drinkability is really high. Don’t let ipa drinkers fool you.

There is nothing wrong with this beer. I just tried my first one and it's got a pretty simple profile but a good blend of ingredients. I may be wrong about this but I think Shiner Premium is the original shiner recipe apart from the Bock. Their 1909 is the first recipe but I think the premium is pretty much a modified version of it that became shiner's main beer until they experimented with craft brew and created Shiner Bock. In 1972, there was a demand that it be available nationwide so they kinda made Bock their main brew. I think Premium tastes much better than Bock.

Boring, not awful but not pleasant. And I like Shiner beer generally. Ugh.

Pours a standard translucent gold with a fluffy white head. It smells like slightly sweet barley with very subtle grassy and floral hop smells as well. The taste is like a golden either bread with enough of a bitter finish to keep it from being sweet. It goes down easy and I'd say it's leaps and bounds better than all the big beers.

Pours a pale gold with a good head of foam.

Smell is of sweet grain, very light hint of bitterness.

Sweet and grainy malt dominate, slight hop bitterness, finish is rather thin, that goes for the mouthfeel as well. Just noticed some soapy character.

Not terrible but I only have the one bottle, thank goodness.

12oz bottle poured into Three Philosopher's wine glass. Picked up at the grocery store during the COVID-19 pandemic as part of a $15 Shiner Brewery Tour variety 12pack. no discernible date anywhere on the bottle or label.

Appearance - Tight, flat small 1 finger white head with decent retention. Clear straw body. Decent carbonation. 5

Smell - No discernible smell. Even with a swirl it produces nothing more than a slight many sweet floral corniness. 5

Taste - Smooth light-medium corny body. Usually this taste is followed by some weird metallic or skunk off tones but this one has a perfectly delicious front, body and aftertaste. This is what I always wished that cheap macros tasted like. 5

Mouthfeel - Clean light-medium body, refreshing, no off characters. 5

Overall - Might actually be the best American lager I've ever had. The striking lack of off characters of any sort is remarkable. While not my favorite style, it's absolutely top tier when rating within style which is how I do it. I don't give out many perfect ratings but even when trying I can't see where I'd deduct even a fraction of a point. 5

L: 3.25 typical adjunct straw yellow. Ample carbonation but the head disappeared quickly
S: 3.25 pretty decent for an American lager. Hops and grains are evident.
T: 3.25 corn. barley. Touch of lemongrass. Decent.
F: 3.5 Okay, but I expect it to be more easygoing. Doesn't feel as light as it is.
O: 3.25 An alright beer, but not one i think i'll try again.

This beer pours a nice clear light gold color, no head. The smell is a good mix of bread & wheat. Tastes pretty much identical to the smell, honestly not a lot of complexity to it. Very crisp feel to it, high carbonation, goes down very smooth. Overall, this beer is pretty basic, but not bad.
