Paid a quick visit into 505 Mendocino, it’s not that hard to find, maybe a 5 minute walk from Russian River and the clue is in the name.

From the outside it looks like one of many Spanish or Mexican Restaurants, Bodega styling and tiled roofing add a nice touch to the exterior presentation. Due to the fact that this was a weekend visit I ended up having my hand ink-stamped to get in, and ID checks were in force for the younger looking brigade.

Inside it still retains a lot of character; sadly it is completely out of place and seems disjointed. The Mexican Restaurant décor seems unchanged, in fact if I closed my eyes and opened them again and witnessed people sat down eating Burritos, Tacos, etc. then it would not have been out of place or a surprise. As you enter a long bar runs down the middle of the place, some upturned casks form tables, and there are high stools around the edges of the building and other waist high tables that seemed to attract a conglomeration of the younger punters. As one room runs off to your left with the bar running down the middle, an archway on your right takes you through to a back room, opened out but with some alcoves, a band were making use of the larger of these alcoves and playing here during my visit. Off to the right there seemed to be yet further tables and chairs that run out to the back.

The beer range seemed to very, very good, some 50 odd taps but many of them, I counted some 20+ had inverted red plastic cups over the taps. Regardless, the range covers a wide selection, a healthy dollop of macros is keenly punctuated with a good range of micros, and maybe 60-75% of the brews on offer could be considered to be craft. Lots of Californian brews were noted with a few from oopf North too such as Deschutes. I opted for a Bear Republic Racer 5, and it was decent enough. Seems like they also serve a selection of decent bottled beer too but I was only in here for the one.

Service was very matter of fact, not many smiles either, they were busy and with the loud music you had to call out your beer firmly.

The atmosphere in here is probably the biggest turn-off, I am not sure if the weekend Saturday night-club feel with the live band in the back is de rigueur every night, but it is at odds I guess with the great range of beer and the Mexican restaurant décor. A strange mélange of ingredients and a strange place, but the beer range is not in dispute, at least when all the beers are on sale.

It’s not far from Russian River and Flavor so it’s worth a walk over stop, but you may want to avoid the busy weekend nights if you want to enjoy your brew.

Last Visit: Sunday 31st December, 2006.
