I have a lot of ambition to get down to Athens for a visit to Jackie-Os, but haven't yet made the trip from C-bus. I have heard a lot about their beers, but this one was the first I've tried (purchased at their initial bottling by JaBier, so thanks to him!). And I give this beer the benefit of the doubt - I think it is probably a very good beer, but my example was not a sterling example of great beer. I split this bottle with SurlySober, who mentioned that the cap came off pretty easily, and my guess is there are still some quality control issues to be worked out. This beer smelled and tasted pretty decent, but had no head and was very flat. Appearance was thick and viscous, with a gold/straw color. Carbonation was nowhere to be found. Aroma was hoppy and mildly sweet, but not overpowering. Flavor was a little cloying and hoppy, and lightly citrusy. Mouthfeel was pretty disappointing, owing to lack of zip in the carbonation department. I'd like to try this beer at the brew-pub and think it would be great on cask. I'll rewrite this review then.

Thanks to RussianDragon for pointing out that I neglected to rate this. From my old school notes: 23 Jan 2010
Shared by the former drinkndrive. Thanks Devin!
The beer is golden orange with a small, soapy white head. Aromas of spicy malt, tropical fruit, booze. Bold and assertive flavor, with mango, pineapple. Resinous and full bodied, finishing with alcoholic warmth. Pretty tasty.

APPEARANCE (4.25) - Served from a tap handle at the always-lovely Creekside Local Cantina in Gahanna into a strange little 12oz glass, this beer was a burnished orange color, not quite glowing golden, but not overly red either. It looked heavy and had half a finger of dense, white head that remained as a ring around the glass til the very end.
SMELL (3.75) - I had this directly following a glass of FFF's Dreadnaught, so my nose may have been slightly off, but in comparison I found the aroma of the Matriarch to be slightly lacking. Some pale malt sweetness and a little grassy, citrusy hops, but nothing memorable here.
TASTE (4.75) - Fortunately the taste floored me with quality in every direction. While not a perfect IPA, this had all the notes you want for the style starting off with a flash of malty sweetness accompanied by ripe peach notes unique to this beer which was immediately whisked away on a train ride of tropical bitterness that ranged from mango to grapefruit, but never veered into piney territory. This was a fruit bomb, for sure, and with all the peach put me in mind of some sort of delicious peach cobbler balanced by some hoppy bitters. The alcohol was well-hidden (and mine was certainly stronger than 8.5%; it was labelled as 11%) and served to lend some spicy notes to the finish.
FEEL (4.0) - Big and creamy, but a little bit prickly from the alcohol. Not actually a problem for me, as that prickliness added to the overall taste experience, it did however make the beer "feel" a little, just a little bit less smooth than it could have.
OVERALL (4.5) - Right up there with the best IPAs I've ever had, to be sure. This had such strong, fruit-forward, tropical flavors, and the peach notes were unique to this beer alone. Delicious and round, this is easily my favorite Jackie O's beer by a massive margin.
