Big tropical hops, especially ripe pineapple, up front along with some piney resin. ABV is completely buried in the taste. Some caramelized malts in the base, but not enough to really balance. Sugars seem to come mostly from fruit juices, like peach. Finish starts with citrus and mango and slides back to resin which lingers on the sides of the tongue for awhile.

Thanks to AmericanBrew for sharing this bottle.

Bottle 134 of 156. The beer pours a hazy orange color with a white head. The aroma is orange and resiny hops. This is definitely a hop-forward beer. The flavor is heavy on the hops as well with a lot of resiny and pine notes. I don't get much citrus in the flavor, possibly because it is overpowered by the other hop flavors. Medium mouthfeel and medium carbonation.

Made my first in-person trip down to Jackie O's this Valentine's weekend for my birthday. Needless to say, I was quite excited and encountered an impressive lineup.

Appearance- Pours a sparkling golden with lots of beading carbonation and about a quarter finger of creamy white head that sticks around almost throughout the entire drink. Lots of sticky lacing left as well.

Smell- Smells like a big ole' fruity hop punch to the face. Similar to their IPA, the DIPA is very much west coast in its fruitiness. Lots of tropical passion-fruit, pineapple, grapefruit rind, and orange. Hop profile smells deliciously fruity.

Taste- Huge hoppy notes of grapefruit, pineapple, and orange creamsicle. The notes of orange are much more prominent than in the standard IPA. A greater complexity in the hop bouquet as well. Finished again with a drying hop bite.

Mouthfeel/Drinkability- Mouthfeel is spot on with a nice creamy smoothness and goes down easy. Drinkability is stellar for the ABV. Really liked this one.

Overall, not only probably the best DIPA I've had on tap, it is one of the best DIPA I've ever had. Probably my favorite beer of the night and really quite good.

Matriarch is a bright dark orange in color, translucent, and somehow simultaneously heavy and light in the body. The creamy crown of light tan head drops creamy legging that spreads all over the glass.
This beer's aroma is big, to say the least. honey, pine, citrus, mint, and light pith balance off of lots of malts that keep it from being too harsh. It's balanced, yes, but this beer is absolutely loaded with hops.
The taste is the same with a little more bite, a touch of a slightly more peppery quality, and a light boozy note on the end.
This beer has a crisp feel, and while it's on the drier side it's juicy. It's got a medium body and lots of depth as the dryness and juiciness mingle, crispness keeps its bite, and it's still smooth all the way through.

Presentation: Poured from a 22 brown bomber into an Imperial pint glass. Picked this up at the first bottle release and am just getting around to sampling it. Bottle 11/30/2009. Bottle 11/156.

Appearance: Pours with 1/2 finger of white head. This settles to a few spotty islands of foam leaving some lacing. The beer itself is the color of honey with just a slight chill haze. Some particulate matter.

Smell: Spicy hop aromas of pine and flowers. Very resinous.

Taste: Spicy upfront, with the flavors of dry hopping; grapefruit, citrus, and pineapple. Slight bready malt backbone. Bitter and long lasting finish.

Mouthfeel: Average level of carbonation. Body is very good, thick and viscous.

Drinkability: Another great beer from Jackie O's. I would certainly have another of these, but Brad makes so many different styles, it is hard to revisit ones I have had.

orange tinted amber came out of the can and splashed and poured a huge three inch head of white foam that stuck to the side with incredible lacing and a formidable amount of foam. Tons of carbonation was streaming up to the surface throughout the session. Aroma was grapefruit and pineapple heaven. Not piercing bitter, rather totally sweet and fruity and mellow. Wonderful balance of aroma and completely fresh. Really well done. Each sip followed suit as the hops were dripping with freshness and ripe citrus flavor. Touches of sweetness balancing it out nicely as even in the final sips I was pickin up hints of buttery and biscuit like notes before a rich and dry grapefruit finish

Hop heads in Athens love Mystic Mama, but I always preferred Matriarch. And now you can step up the hops even further with the Double Dry Hopped Matriarch.

Appearance - Amber yellow, clear.

Smell - Hop flower, citrus back.

Taste - Bitter hop flower, citrus, orange peel back.

Mouthfeel - Crisp, dry.

Overall - I used to think of this beer as super-hopped, but I guess all of the competition has squelched that. It's still a very drinkable lovely hopped beer with citrus tones, but the Double Dry Hopped Matriarch now gives me that super-hopped punch.

Had this the night before the June 25th release. Received in a tulip.

3.5 A: Clear medium orange color. Filled to the top and thus no head.

5.0 S: Hop forward despite the ABV (I could swear it was listed at higher than 8.5%). Plenty of grapefruit, pine, and unbelievable amounts of pineapple. Easily the most pineapply brew I've ever had. Super intense mango and some papaya. Light crystal component and a "fresh mountain streaminess."

4.0 T: Taste is very good, but fails to capture the intensity of the nose. Soft moderate bitterness, lightly bready malts, and just a touch of booze. Pine and grapefruit are most intense with tropical fruits under that.

3.5 M: Medium body. Good moderate carbonation. Could be creamier. Lingering bitterness.

4.0 D: Solid beer. Excellent nose with a good taste. Mouthfeel could be creamier, which is how I like my DIPAs.
