bottle #165 and reviewed from notes

dark as night with a heavy tan head that was thick and gave the beer that thick and creamy look i had so wanted it to be. nice lacing down the sides of the glass as well..

aroma starts with warm vanilla and roasted malts, hints of light oak and coffee, nice touches of chocolate and a warm brown sugar as it hits room temperature. flavor follows suit perfectly as the warming from the roasted malts and rich barrel flavor are simply superb. rich vanilla and caramel, chocolate, roasted coffee and a nice smooth finish that was dotted with notes of light bitterness

Good beer but has flavors that don't really seem to work well together: brown sugar, cornstarch, some roast, and tinny warmness. Hops were alright. I drank this at the bar and had a nice time trying to figure out what it was trying to be which wasn't that hard.

Pours a dark chestnut brown, almost black color with slight mahogany edges and a half finger off-white head that quickly fades into a lasting ring. Sporadic spots of lace left behind.

Sweet vinous aroma with a strong red wine barrel presence. Earthy oak and dark fruit with subtle smokey malt. Hints of grape, raisin, plum and fig but not much smokey/roasted malt character. One dimensional and not very interesting smelling.

Lighter bodied than expected with a very prominent vinous barrel character. Lots of red wine notes with hints of grape, cherry, raisin and plum. Little to no roasted malt with no smokey, toasted or chocolate notes to be found. Sour and sweet with lots of tannins and one dimensional flavor. This was a big disappointment from a good brewery.

I believe this bottle was from their first official bottle release. This bottle seemed to be infected, so take this review with a grain of salt. Pours dark brwn with a thin tan head. Nose has some roasty malts and and a sour cherry presence. Similar flavor profile. Definately infected, but not bad. Medium body. Not their most impressive offering to date.

Thanks to neorunner for this bottle. Was told beforehand that it could be slightly infected and that I should drink sooner than later.

A: Pours black with a finger of fine beige head. Held to the light, it is a muddy mahogany brown.

S: Oak, then plums and raspberries, and impending sourness. A touch of smoke - I'm finding the smell rather pleasant. Lingering vanilla much much later.

T: Much like the smell, a sour infection has ran it's way through. Sourness turning sweet, then to a dull finish - La Folie like to start. I was told this was unintentional, and it is certainly not a porter anymore, but I still find it enjoyable. The upfront sourness drowns out much of the later flavors, I get hints of coffee and oatmeal towards the end.

M: Overall mouthfeel is medium. Thinner than I would expect for a -bal porter. There is a hint of the malty body, oatmeal smoothness perhaps, but not much. After a few more drinks, there is a slightly cloying finish, sherry-like.

D: Infection makes this a sipper at best. I don't dislike it as is, but it's certainly not what the brewer had intended. No abv listed, but the half a glass I've gone through is noticeable.

As an Athens ex-pat, I'm a big fan of anything these guys do. And part of me will always call them O'Hooleys.

The beer pours a dark brown color with red highlights and a white head. The aroma is a great mix of dark chocolate, roasted malt and some dark fruit. A very inviting aroma.

The flavor is a little bit unexpected, but very nice. I get a ton of roasted malt and chocolate, but there is also a nice tart cherry flavor. I am not sure if the beer is supposed to be lightly tart/sour, but it works very well. The beer tastes a lot like chocolate covered cherries. If the beer is in fact infected, this is a case of the infection helping the beer instead of hurting the beer.

Medium mouthfeel and medium carbonation. Outstanding overall.

Luck to get a bottle of this one as a gift.

Split this with another beer nerd, and we were both very impressed with how smooth this porter was.

Poured a very rich light brown color with good visibility through it. Good amount of light foamy head on a generous pour. Smell was coffee, and a little burnt cocoa flavors. Taste turned to be much more tart, and bordering on a sour note that made for a very smooth drinkability. Mouthfeel was clean and crisp, almost a paler.. porter

Bottle #7/156 - bottled on 11/28/2009. This is just under a year old. Received in a trade with Rhinos00 a while back. Poured into a snifter.

A: Maroon tinged dark brown with an ephemeral beige head.

S: Prominent dark fruit component, made up of plum, grape, and some prune. It's mildly lactic in character, slightly sour, with a firm chocolate profile. There are some light bready notes, but this has mainly succumbed to lactic dark fruits. Roasted malt is very restrained and no alcohol is evident.

T: Displays a light tartness and a light lactic sourness with notes of grape, plum, and prune. There are chocolate notes accompanying the sour dark fruit, with light tannins and a little oak. The finish is somewhat astringent.

M: Upper medium body with moderate carbonation and a sticky and somewhat thin mouthfeel.

Overall: I doubt the beer tasted this way a year ago, as it wasn't advertised as a sour porter. I should have opened it fresh, but it got pushed to the back of the cellar and was overlooked. Interesting and not terrible, but ultimately flawed.

Barreled & Portered is a dark, mahogany brown color. It's nowhere close to opaque. Backlighting reveals nice burgundy highlights throughout. The head is a little off-white and rises to about a finger in depth. It's quick to recede. Lacing is very light. I don't know the abv on this one. May be a little too high for much head.

The nose kicks off with a nice, moderate bourbon scent. It's not too much (or too little). It's just right in the mix. There's a light chocolate malt presence. Smells bittersweet and a little cocoa-ish. Light coffee is also in the mix. Bourbon is the strongest scent here, but it's overall a little underpowered. Rounding it out are subtle vanilla and alcohol.

The flavor is good. Bourbon does come through very clear. In my book, it's a perfect, moderate presence. It allows the chocolate and coffee flavors to shine through. Their presence is a little stronger here. It has a bit of a tangy flavor that's reminiscent of dark fruit. It's subtle, but noted. Alcohol is present, but isn't warming or hot. Light vanilla and bourbon finish it off. It's a relatively straight forward barrel-aged Porter, but it's good.

The body is light and leans medium with warming. It's a little too light. Carbonation is dialed down nicely, and it is smooth. But, I can't help but think a bigger body would really help. Drinkability is good. Barreled & Portered goes down smooth and easy. I don't know how big it is in terms of abv, but it doesn't seem overwhelming. Perhaps it's deceptive.

Jackie O's did a nice job with Barreled & Portered. It might seem a little to simply and straight forward, but that's often a recipe for success. My only small complaint is that the body seems a little small. I'd like a little more. Nonetheless, this is good stuff. If you ever have the chance, check it out. Thanks a ton, Chris.

Thanks to markwise for this one.

A: Pours a deep brown with red highlights. The head is tan in color with okay retention and a bit of lace.

S: Aroma of chocolate, light dark fruit, oak, and vanilla.

T: Roasty and chocolaty for sure. The barrel is fairly forward as well. Slightly earthy with a bit of hops in the finish.

M: Fairly light in body for the style.

D: Pretty good, I liked it.
