Can into a New Belgium snifter. Transpartent, light gold in color with about 1.5 fingers of sticky, white foam on top. Strong hops and dank pine resin on the nose with backing notes of sweet flowers and citrus. The taste follows suit quite well, as this one is filled with..."copious amounts of pungent hops". Yeah, sums it up pretty well. Pretty dank and resinous up front, but hits a couple sweet notes on the back end. Light weight, fairly creamy. Easy to drink. Yeah. Overall, this is a really good IPA. A little underrated at 88, in my opinion. For what it's worth, I think it tastes better straight from the can.

Really nice IPA and worth a try. Great varied hop profile here. Juicy, dank, bitter and piney. My only complaint is that the balance is slightly off. The bitterness takes too much away from the other flavors in the finish, and this is a guy who loves IBU's. Overall a solid beer but not as solid as their stouts.

Look - honey colored but a little dull. The smell is like wet leaves with some herbs - actually quite pleasant. Taste has hops, not too bitter and with hints of grapefruit perhaps. The negative is the feel in the mouth - it is thin somehow - really needs something like cheese, sausage or a piece of salami to pair with it. Then you get a complete feel. With food that has fat, it works for me. Even a veggie burger would work. (I cannot bring myself to try it with a salad. I know for me it would just not work.)
This is a really decent beer when paired appropriately, but as a stand alone beer somehow it doesn't quite make it. I will definitely buy again (for cookouts, meals etc.)

Can dated 8/27:
Pours a nice, mostly clear light golden color. Head is white, grows nicely, and settles in good time to a medium ring with spotty surface coverage. Lacing is minimal.

Nose is a weird combination of vegetal and floral, a bit of onion is the main single note that escapes that combination. This would tend to foreshadow a lower score from me, but isn't too strong to get lower my expectations. Deeper whiffs do bring some grapefruit pith, and warmth strengthens this to almost removing the onion.

Feel is tending to dry, with light tickling carbonation. This feeds into flavors that match the nose pretty well. Clean malt lead the hops to the fore, again - herbal to vegetal, some onion early. The graprefruit pith I got in the nose struggles to come out, but never quite makes it, in my mind. Finish leaves a light coating on my tongue with this pour, lingering hop bitterness is nice.

I tried to find something to really praise in this beer, and there wasn't anything I could come up with. I tried to find what was wrong with this beer, and could come up with nothing but those things which were tied more to my own preferences. Overall, just a tad towards the onion side, and nothing exceptional makes this a nice, drinkable, wouldn't turn down and would even order again on occasion beer.

Great look and smell. Taste is good with juicy hops but then an unpleasant bitterness comes in. But I would mind drinking this daily but I still prefer hanger 24 Betty IPA a lot more

Mystic Mama is very....very good and well worth the try. The beer pours a slightly hazy golden with white head that laced all the way down the glass....LUV IT!!! The scent is a wee heavy on the pine with hints of citrus. The taste is well balanced through the drink but finishes bitter...but leave the pallet easy. The mouthfeel is medium in body with good carbonation. Overall it is awesome.

A thanks to the captain of the canship, woodychandler, for this beer. Poured from a 12 oz. can. Has a golden color with a 1/2 inch head. Smell is of hops, pine, resin. Taste is the same as the smell, also some hints of grapefruit, dry at the finish. Feels medium/full in the mouth and overall is a solid beer.

A deep golden orange pour with a thick head that dissipates quickly into nice lacing. Smells of citrus and strong hops. Taste has a grapefruity bitterness. It drinks very smooth. Definitely an enjoyable beer.

Poured into an IPA glass. Nice light amber color with generous head that stayed a while. Smell full of citrus and pine. Taste was bracingly bitter with grapefruit but then a strong grassy presence that I could not shake. Balanced malt and dry. Overall a nice IPA but not suited for my palate.

12oz can from Kain05 (thanks man!). No apparent canning date. Served in a goblet.

Pours a cloudy pale orange with three fingers of pale head. The bubbles linger before receding to a healthy ring that leaves some decent sized clumps of lace.

The dankish aroma features notes of oranges, flower petals and a hint of sweetness.

The flavor opens up and seems more vibrant than the nose. Orangey citrus, dank pine, grapefruit rinds, pepper, faint oniony floral note and a little bit of crackery malt. Some really good flavors that go down easily.

Medium bodied with moderate carbonation. Lingering, bitter, citrusy aftertaste with orange skins, earthy pine and some faint cracker.

While it might not be at the top of my list, Mystic Mama is a tasty and serviceable IPA. It presents an enjoyable hop assault without getting overly bitter.

This is a pretty beer with a substantial white head that sits around for a while. This thing smells ridiculously good: a floral and citrusy bouquet with minor hints of alcohol. Flavor mostly follows suit, but with malts coming through about halfway across the tongue. Mouthfeel is fine, but could be a little thicker.

Another great beer coming out of this brewery.

12 ounce can served in a pint glass.

Pours a medium, opaque golden color with a 2 finger, frothy white head with nice lacing.

Smells of citrus hops. Taste the same with a bit of bitterness.

Not an awesome ipa but a very good one. Worth the six pack.

Finest Ohio IPA from one of Ohio's finest breweries. The IBU count is somewhat shocking given the complexity and balance this beer still navigates with its malts. One of my all-time favorites.

Reviewed 3-13-15. Threshold Beer Glass. Canned on 1-7-15.

Appearance: My, how pale! Almost 2 inches of bright white head, frothy. Leaves a thin skim of retention. Nice lacing. Modest carbonation - slightly hazy gold.

Aroma: So hoppy it smells a little like gasoline, resiny.

Taste: Dry arrival. Clean, dry, bitter. Dry through and through, hoppy. Bitter finish. Malt? What malt? [Postscript: not fruity at all, just resiny, dank, grassy, somewhat piney, somewhat floral.]

Mouthfeel: Light, with modest carbonation. Perfect IPA.

Overall: Wow. This is a great IPA. Extremely hoppy, exceptionally refreshing. Could make this a regular. Very West Coast - light, hoppy, refreshing. [Postscript: I have since come to recognize the distinct smell and taste of Simcoe hops. This was a Simcoe beer, and I'm usually not a fan of Simcoe beers, though I liked it in this one.]

From BeerAdvocate Magazine #83 (Dec 2013):

“Brewed with a copious amount of pungent hops,” including Columbus, Warrior, Amarillo and Simcoe, all of which are showcased in an awesome array of aromas and flavors with a malty backbone to reign this hop-bomb in just a bit. Overall, a very solid and aggressive IPA in a can that won’t disappoint hopheads looking for their next fix.

STYLE: American IPA
ABV: 7.0%

LOOK: Light, golden, hazy, thick head

SMELL: Grapefruit, pineapple, grass, herbal, dan

TASTE: Chewy, sticky, resiny, grassy, piney, leafy, zesty, grapefruity, jammy, malty, bready, ashy

Pours pale straw with minimal head; very light. Caramel, sugar and mild tropical fruit on the scent. Luckily things take a turn in the flavor. Mango, bitter grass, cane sugar, weed, pineapple, resin, and hints of pine.

Can poured into glass. Solid IPA with great mouthfeel and classic appearance. Nice lacing, somewhat musky aroma. The only thing keeping this from competing with the very best in the class is a finish that has a bit too much piney bitterness. Very good overall.

Pours honey yellow with a thin white head. Smells are of fruit. Taste is somewhat grapefruit with a nice hop finish, leans more to the hoppy side of things. There is mild carbonation. Overall, a nice IPA that is hop forward.

Review taken as soon as cans hit the shelves near the beginning of Fall 2014.

12 oz can with some pretty stunning artwork. I like Jackie O's and their style. Purple artwork of the mystic mama herself sitting on a black background. Poured into a Nonic style pint glass.

A - Hazy yellowish with a slight touch of golden yellow hue. It looks refreshing. Head pours decent and settles to a thin ring of lacing leave very good stick.

S - fruity and citric notes are what I picked out first. Passion fruit, tangerine, and even a whiff of kiwi. Pine resin note comes on faint with a touch of honeyed bread malt make up the backbone.

T - citrusy hops and a nice sweetness. Not quite as good as the nose, but still brings it's flavor across nicely. Citrus and somewhat dank resinous hops come run in between slightly sweet malt notes.

M - medium bodied and highly drinkable. A nice, refreshing feel to this. Texture is solid and it leaves it's flavor clinging to the mouth. Smooth mouthfeel that flows very well.

O - a very good beer from Jackie O's and one I will pick up again. This stuff tastes so fresh and it is just that considering Jackie O's is only about an hour away. Good stuff

Received as an extra. Three months old.

A - Poured into a Kate the Great tulip a nice hazy golden hue with a thin head that fades to leave sudsy lacing.

S - Aromas of sweeter malts, bitter hops, nothing particular special, pleasant though.

T - Taste is similar to the nose, malts are more subdued, nice bitterness, faint remnants of tropical hops, finish is a bit bland.

M - Mouthfeel is nicely carbonated, though slightly thin.

O - Overall this beer was nice, though probably a shell of what it should be. Tasty but should be better.

Poured into the Speigelau from a 12oz canned on 2/19/15. Really fresh. Clear amber with a finger of loose, white head with ample lacing. Pungent hop notes, pine, mango, perhaps a bit of lemon/lime, and a nice, sticky resinous dank hint (bit of that savory funk). Juicy outright with big lemon and grapefruit coming in hard. Slightly too much bitterness for the sweetness of the malt in this one (but I'm splitting hairs)... overall tasty and crushable. Medium mouthfeel, with some of the danker notes lingering... well put together IPA. Nice head scratcher... Jackie O's still hasn't disappointed.

Had never had a beverage from this brewer before...i am impressed. A very flavorful and fragrant IPA which can compete with, but not surpass, similar beers in its class.
