Poured moderately hard from a large bottle into a snifter glass, forming a finger or two of tan head. Deep brown color. Smell is definitely nutty. Flavor follows, with a bit of malt background with lots of walnut up front. Not complex, and solid if you like nuts. Not too many stouts that use nuts, so unique from that perspective.

Sampling a cellar temp 12.7 oz bottle from 2020. Been in my cellar since January 2021 and well taken care of prior to the trade that sent it my way.
Ive poured into my trusty snifter and the beer pours a pure black coffee color with almost no light passing through, only on the edges do I see hints of mahogany color. A dense tightly packed tan head of about 1 cm foams up and has faded to a sturdy surface covering quickly after the pour. This covering does stick around and leaves dense lattice when I take a sip or swirl the glass.
Aroma is dark malts with some dark chocolate and bits of charred malt and some nutty notes, not a sweet hit like peanuts or hazelnut, definitely more earthy. I may get a little anise on the nose too.
First sip reveals a smooth textured medium bodied beer. The carbonation is very vine and gently rolls across my palate. Feels very smooth and easy to drink for an ABV of 10%!
Flavor is sort of what nose advertised with some additional flavors too. Roasted malts and dark chocolate with a bit of light coffee and again char are up front. This moves to some earthy nut flavors that linger a bit. I dont get any real hop notes nor any hint of ABV from flavor or any warmth. This beer is a sneaky easy drinker and another win from a solid brewery! Well worth it if you like bigger imperial stouts.

I think this one mostly comes down to how you feel about walnut. If you’re a fan, this is an exceptional beer. There’s a walnuty umami thing going on with a nice bourbon barrel finish. Little vanilla. Hint of maple. So good. Worth a tick for sure.
Note: let this one warm a bit

12.7 oz bottled 2021 poured into a Spiegelau stout glass at just above fridge temp 10% ABV. The beer pours dense black with little or no light penetration and light brown head. The head recedes to an irregular ring and single layer of bubbles. Minimal lacing. The aroma is mild with sweet and roasty notes. The taste is bittersweet roasted malt with a hint of nuttiness and earthy, mild bitterness. The mouthfeel is medium bodied with just less than medium carbonation and a mostly dry finish. No hint of the ABV in the taste or aroma. Overall, very good. This is a very nuanced and delicious imperial stout.

Oil of Aphrodite from Jackie O’s Brewing. Received on 10 Sep 20 from Craftshack, San Diego, CA. $15.24 (Including shipping) per 12.7 oz bottle ($ 1.20/oz). Stored at home at 42 degrees. Reviewed 9/7/21. Note that I use DD/MM/YY protocol.
Undated other than “2020” on the label. Served at 56.4 degrees in a hand washed and dried Jester King snifter. Final temperature 61.7 degrees.
Appearance – 3.
First pour – Amber Brown (SRM 18), clear.
Body – Black (SRM 40), opaque. When rear-lite, amber at the thinnest edge.
Head – Average (Maximum three cm, aggressive center pour), buff, high density, short retention, diminishing to a three mm crown constantly being replenished by rapid carbonation and a thin partial cap.
Lacing – None.
Aroma – 3.5 – Begins with roasted malt with perhaps a hint of coffee, no hops, no yeast.
Flavor – 3.75 – Begins with moderately bitter roasted malt, although some of the bitterness may be contributed by the black walnuts, then shifts to sweet. Slight coffee flavor but not tasting any black walnuts, no hops, no yeast. No ethanol (10 % ABV, as marked on container) taste. Gastric burning does occur following the first swallow, but this quickly ameliorates to a dull glow. No dimethylsulfide or diacetyl.
Palate – 3.25 – Medium, watery, soft carbonation.
Final impression and summation: 3.5 Unremarkable appearance – could be anything from a porter to a stout. Definitely temperature-dependent, gets sweeter as it warms, and the ethanol flavor increases. Thinner than expected, more to the porter end of the spectrum. Overall, I’m somewhat disappointed – I was expecting a heavier mouthfeel and was absolutely expecting some black walnut flavoring.

Very nice! Rich backbone of cocoa, bourbon, raisin, plum, candied nut, licorice, and just the right crisp hoppiness on top of it all. Smells fantastic, the oak barrel coming through amid the great stuff already mentioned. Truly a celebration of the art of imperial stout. I got a lot from this bottle, worth the price and would love to have again.

Opaque, nice head that dissipates relatively quickly. Coffee, molasses, I get walnut in the nose but not the taste. Very nice. Would buy again.
