bottle 59 of 300 from 2013, big thanks to evan12 for the share. enjoyed from a mini snifter at the southampton IRS release and then the capped bottle was uncapped at home and re-enjoyed from a JO mini...review is a combo of notes from first impression and 2nd impression a few hours later.

a - brew poured a watery black, but coated the glass in stoutiness. what little head present was gone quick. some nice dark brown highlights but once the head was gone, it was gone for good...little sludgy.

s - nose is fairly peaty. folks at the release when the bottle was first opened were surprised that this vintage seemed to lack some of the magic of previous vintages (or other bottles)...some fruitiness from the rum was there, but hidden behind the soggy peat the leads in the nose.

t - flavor follows the nose to a degree leading with peat, but presenting a wash over the rum infused stout.

m - mouth is carbonated and a bit chewy, fairly big and bold, even for the style.

o - overall, a bit of a let down. i've had several JO brews over the years and always heard that this was the highlight and i've definitely had others that were better. nice to finally get the tick though.

Bottle 71/300 of the 2013 batch.

A: Pitch black pour with a small but dense dark brown head. Head fades pretty quick due to small initial size but great retention and a nearly solid wall of heavy lacing to boot.

S: Interesting aroma. Hard to place. It's nutty, mainly. Even without the label I would have said walnuts, and a whole lot of them. Some sweet chocolate to mix in and some vanilla to boot? Very unique.

T: Again, super nutty initially but now there's a good amount of sharp rum in there mixing it up. Quite a bit of chocolate in the middle to boot. Kinda tastes fudgey. Some caramel in the finish joins it. Pleasant bittersweet chocolate aftertaste with a hint of walnuts. The boozy rum especially likes to linger.

M: Big, smooth and borderline creamy.

O: I've had the regular version of this and I don't remember it being quite so nutty. Rum is sharp but cuts the thickness and add some complexity. A very unique brew, I debated quite a bit on the scores. It's a little odd up front but fantastic on the back end.

Poured cold from the tap at Jackie O's with a hint of a short lasting tan head, clean and leaving no lace but a thin ring around the edge.

Subtle rum and oak?, sweet molasses, smoke?

Big bodied, chewy, rum barrel, char after, super cool brew.

Drinkable - are you serious ?
