Poured 12oz can to pint glass. Hazy yellow color with one finger head that held nicely. Pungent hoppy smell with rye shining through. Bitter on the front of palate was not to my liking. Medium feel as the rye lingers.

Excited to see another Jackie O's can show up, the Hop Ryot you guessed hit is an Rye IPA. Pours a hazed copper hue with fine bubbled off white head, fine even banded lacing. Aroma spicy rye hits you up front and center, with citric grapefruit rinds, herbal, and pine accented hop profile the can just says brewed with rye malt and lotsa hops. Rye gives it a creamy spiced bread character, hop pellets are providing healthy levels of hop bitterness citrus peel and mild pine cone flavors very earthy slightly abrasive on the palate, creamy textured. Mouthfeel has smooth carbonation their house yeast always give me just a hint of medicinal or band aid phenolic character but not overpowering to the extent that it ruins the beer for me. Carbonation works just fine, again the creamy texture and luscious light hop oils blends to a smooth finish herbal/pine earthy hop bitterness does not stick around it actually finishes quite clean for a beer with lotsa hops. Overall, lotsa hops a bit of a rye malt base with caramelized sugars decent definitely not mind blowing why don't they release any of their big or wild beers statewide, it bums me out.

12 oz can into a lager glass.

Appearance: Pours a slightly hazy yellow gold with a moderate size off-white head. Very nice lacing. Good retention.

Aroma: Strong and hoppy ... an IPA I could smell right after popping the tab. Fruity and a bit pungent, with tropical fruits that include pineapple.

Flavor: The substantial hop load imparts abundant tropical fruit notes. There's a bit of added complexity from the rye. The bitterness is medium: lower than the hoppy aroma suggests, and perhaps a touch lower than average for a 2015 American IPA (no complaints here). Good balance.

Mouthfeel: Medium-light. Crisp, medium-high carbonation.

Overall: recommended, especially as a Rye IPA. I had this paired with another Ohio Rye IPA, Four String Skeleton Red IPA: The Jackie O's was way more fruity, less earthy, less bitter, more complex, better balanced and lighter colored, but sported a less frothy and durable head.
