Thanks for sharing. 12oz bottle into a snifter.

A: Dark brown with a big light brown head.

S: Maple and a strong dark fruit presence with dark chocolate and vanilla. Lactic sourness is pervasive and vinegar is restrained. Toasted almonds meld with earth, lightly roasted malt, and an evident tartness.

T: Vinegar in the flavor but not much acetic acid. Lots of grape and plum with lesser notes of dark cherry. The maple presence is nice. There's a lot of brown sugar. The beer is lightly tart throughout with a matching mellow lactic sourness. The finish brings to mind dark chocolate covered cherries.

M: Lower full body with medium carbonation. The mouthfeel is smooth, sticky, and lightly tannic.

Overall: The beer sounded like a potential mess from the description, but it was surprisingly good.

From 12oz bottle to stemmed glass at Jackie O's on 6/25/11 for their bottle release
*From notes

A: Dark as can be. Rich charcoal black. A massive and creamy 3.5+ finger head and good, thick lacing follows a hard pour.

S: Grade A maple syrup and a bit of marshmallow fluff. As it warms and opens a bit, there's an excessive amount of rusty metal and funk.

T: Initially it comes off like a maple infused Dark Apparition. Then the brett hits. Malic acid gets the mouth watering quick. On the mid-palate there's an overdose of tin/iron/metal that carries to the finish. It's not too off-putting, but it keeps the flavor profile from really expanding to greater, more complex heights. Very good, but not great.

M: Thick for a sour beer. It's lush and dense, with a playful and slightly bubbly carbonation.

O: Jackie O's Dark Apparition Maple Sour is a really unique take on a fantasic base beer. I feel it's a bit one note, and it may take some tweaking to get this to a more exciting place. All in all though it's a crazy little brewery-only beer, and with the right touch, it could be a wonderful sour ale.

Thanks to Bill (AKA Mistakebythelake) for this rarity. One of about 90 unreleased 12oz bottles. I love maple syrup infused imperial stouts so I'm really looking forward to this. Poured into a Darkness snifter.

A: Standard pour yields a half finger fine, light coffee colored head with poor retention. Beer is a clear, opaque black. Lacing is non-existant though there's some decent legs. Below average.

S: Nose is subtle. Maple sweetness, chocolate, and some tart cherries from the added wild yeast. There's also a light coffee presence. Overall pretty unique, but too subtle.

T: Opens tart cherries followed by some chocolate malt, cocoa powder, and liquorice. Funkiness remains through the middle and all the way until the end, covering everything else. Finish is tart with some wet wood acridity. Aftertaste is more of the same but with an indescribable sharp, sour bitterness added. Rather unpleasant.

M: Medium bodied with low to moderate carbonation. Sharp, grainy, and rough in the mouth and filmy and oily going down. Finish is messy with a sticky, lingering aftertaste. A bit rough around the edges for the style.

O: The idea here is great. Like I said in the beginning, I love maple syrup-infused imperial stouts. But the addition of wild yeast completely ruins this one for me. The tart notes are strong enough to cover all the other flavors and what subtleties there are, are ruined by the additition of an unpleasant graininess. This would've really been eager to try just the maple syrup version of this beer. As is though, a failed experiment in my opinion.

I really have to thank Beace for this bottle which he sent with me to share at the Brick Store Pub.

Review from early July.

A - Looks a little over-carbonated. Very tall 3 finger head on a short pour. Black, with medium thickness. Left pretty good lace on the glass.

S - Very sour indeed. Cherry combines with pedio-type funk and acidity.

T - Tart black cherries and chocolate malt up front. Beneath there's some raisin and vanilla flavors.

M - Much thicker than I was imagining somehow... the texture is very coating on the mouth. Sticky sweet with a super dry finish.

O - This was good for a soured stout, a practice I normally tend to dislike severely.

Had this one at the Jackie O's release from a 12oz. It's actually spelled "Maipl."
A: Black with a dark cream collar and film and lacing.
S: Roasted tart cherries, nice chocolate, slight granny apple, rustic. Good and balanced.
T: Good astringency and tartness with chocolate and espresso. I'm really impressed.
M: Thicker with a nice carbonation.
O: Great.
