On tap at the August release. It seemed that a lot of these Oil treatments were quite polarizing. Everyone I talked to liked this treatment more than I did.
Typical Oil Of Aphrodite appearance. Not much head by the time I got my sample. Dark core with only a sliver of reddish brown on the edges.
The chocolate is quite strong here. Lots and lots of brownie fudge and even more tootsie roll chocolate candy. Cherry is really hard to pick out, I only noticed a little bit of fruitiness added to the base beer's nutty and roasty character.
Again, the chocolate rules the roost here. I can't get the image of Tootsie Rolls out of my mind. Cherry seems to have a very brief peak somewhere just before the finish. The end is roasty and nutty with lots more sweet chocolate.
Love the mouthfeel on OoA. This treatment doesn't suffer in this department.
I think this was my least favorite treatment. It is still a very fun beer to try.

A - Pours black, tan-colored head, lacing
S - Chocolate, cherries, burnt sugars. The chocolate and cherries are excellent.
T - chocolate, oak, nutty notes, roast. Not as nice as the nose.
M - Medium to full, light carbonation, creamy finish.
O - I was so damn glad to get this beer. Great beer.

a dark color with mild head. similar to the base beer in all aspects and there is a slight sour dark cherry on the nose. Taste shines through with much stronger chocolate notes up front and strong roasted nut in the middle. finish is slightly sour and the cherry is just a beautiful way to wrap this up. feel is slightly lighter than the base, and a bit more carbonation as well. Overall, a nice variation on this beer.

very dark brown, essentially black except for some slight reddish tinting around the sides of the glass. Completely opaque with no light at all passing through. A nice tight two finger head formed on the top
full thick smell loaded down with chocolate and coffee. I detected a nice hint of dark fruit, cherries naturally as it warmed up and even a touch of lactose sugar. The aroma was heavy, easily detected from a foot or more away.robust and long-lasting, the initial wave of chocolate rolled over you on the first sip, balanced against it was a tight hint of sugar and caramel which gradually faded into a long cherry tart finish. Very well crafted nothing on this one was over the top or dominating of the other flavors. Definitely tasted like a good dessert this one was one of the fullest flavored stouts I have had in a while

I had this on-tap at Jackie O's during the release this weekend. Poured into a sample glass.
Appearance: Pours black with a layer of tan head that fades to a ring around the edge of the glass.
Smell: Sweet and buttery with some cherry and roasty malt.
Taste: This is a really sweet beer, almost cloyingly so. Roasty with some coffee notes and a mild amount of cherry in there as well. There is a buttery flavor in the background as well. The finish is bitter and roasty.
Mouthfeel: The body is thick and syrupy with tingly carbonation and a dry finish.
Overall: I thought this was a weird one for me. I'm not so sure everything worked together. The cherry and the buttery notes didn't quite fit. I'd probably pass on this one in the future.

Had this at the August 27th bottle release. 4 oz pour from a tasting snifter. Since all of the variants of Oil were quite similar to the regular, I'm using my review of the regular as a base and supplementing when necessary.
4.5 A: Black. Came with no head on this one.
5.0 S: Rich, sweet malty base. Plenty of bittersweet chocolate and caramel. Moderate roastiness, toasty, with touches of coffee and molasses. The nuttiness from the walnuts makes this a special, truly unique beer. The candi sugar adds a final layer of complexity. Light cherry and a good bit more chocolate take this to the height of enjoyment.
4.5 T: Full flavored chocolate, caramel, molasses, and a general neutral maltiness. A touch of coffee with a moderate roast. Again, the walnuts add a toasty nuttiness that I cannot get enough of. The mint does nothing but distract and adds nothing of value. Fortunately, it doesn't do too much damage. Coffee addition makes this beer a great coffee beer, but surprisingly it isn't much better than the original. There some cherry and a bit more chocolate, but otherwise this is the same in quality.
4.5 M: Medium to heavier medium body. Good creaminess and super smooth. A tad creamier than the regular.
4.5 D: Love the Oil. Love it on-tap. Love the variants and this is a very good one.

Thanks to Sean for somehow hooking this up.
A - Black beer with a brown head, fairly quick dissolving.
S - It has the unique black walnut aroma that the other Oil of Aphrodite variants have. Lots of roasted malts, some bakers chocolate, slight cherry aroma.
T - Interesting and pretty good flavor. I get a ton of the walnuts in there with a lot of cocoa powder. The cherry comes in on the end, it's there but somewhat subtle.
M - Smooth, creamy, almost full bodied, slightly chalky finish.
O - Solid beer, good variant for a unique beer that added nice flavors. Would drink again.

Irresponsible Tick #13
Crimson brown. Ring on retention is about it. Decent chocolate aromas but tamed cherry. Roasted chocolate and coffee. Solid ROAST!!! Snarl. More chocolate than cherry. It's all tamed, even the roast. Full body, low carbonation with an earthy finish. Not too special but aight. Overtones of nuttiness!

Side by side with all the variants
More head than the others. Strong bitter chocolate on the nose. Tastes chocolate heavy. I don't detect much if any cherry but I like the chocolate aroma. The black walnuts are nice on the nose but a bit muddled on the tongue. Mouthfeel is solid. Overall tasty but not my favourite variation. I think I like the base beer better

Pours nearly pitch-black with a slow rising quarter finger of tan foam that settles quickly to a ring with decent lacing, given the ABV. Good legs.
Aroma is somewhat subdued but very pleasant, with cherry at the forefront. Hints of dark chocolate, vanilla, tobacco, and plums. Just a faint hint of alcohol.
Taste is impressive to say the least. Opens with deeply roasted malt, but does not veer into the realm of char or ash. Quickly transitions to notes of cocoa, vanilla, amaretto, kirsch, brandy, and yet more ripe, sweet cherry. Perhaps a hint of leather. The sweet cherry finish on this beer lasts for a full 45 seconds, at least, and is the most impressive aspect of this brew. Flavor hints at a chocolate cherry cordial, but more complex. Also reminiscent of my mother's chocolate cherry cake, which is a very, very good thing. Is not sour or medicinal, as cherry beers are wont to be. Very nicely done.
Mouthfeel is thick and luxurious, like I generally like my stouts. Could use just a tad more carbonation, which may give a bump to the aroma as well, but by now I'm nitpicking. I had this on tap and was struck with the same impression, so I don't think it's the 2 day old growler...
Highly recommended. Allow this to approach room temperature, as the flavors are really muted when the beer is cold.

Random growler sent to me...thanks, Dave!
A - Pours black, mocha-colored head, thin ring.
S - Chocolate, walnuts, cherries, burnt sugars. The chocolate and cherries are excellent and I can easily pick them out on the nose mixed wonderfully with the rich base beer.
T - Not as much cherry and chocolate notes on the palate. The base beer is much more pronounced here...chocolate, oak, nutty notes, roast. Not as nice as the nose.
M - Medium to full, light carbonation, creamy finish.
O - A really well-done variant on a wonderful base beer. I'm hoping to have this one again when I visit Brad down the road. Consider me a fan of this one. Recommend.
