Of all the beer Brad released this weekend, I was most interested in this. Sour brown (6ABV), aged in secondary with local sour green plums. I didn't even know green plums existed. Poured into a clear taster glass:

A: Pours a nice cloudy brown. Compared to the others sours I got, this head lasted longer and was most impressive. Rusty brown with some gold hues.

S: Very nice. Surprisingly the sour fruit characters come through. Some grapefruit, green grapes, and plums. The acetone is kept in check. Nice lactic acidity, with slight Brett funk.

T: This is a very well integrated sour. The tart fruit flavors complement the yeast perfectly. Really enjoy the tart green fruits coming out.

Overall, a job well done by Brad and the crew. Glad I have a bottle of this to share.

Shared by Photekut at a tasting on 1/26/2012.

Dark reddish brown color, not much of a head. Pretty mediocre appearance.

Smells fairly sweet, molasses and butter, weird dark fruit, mild tartness, some slightly off scent that reminds me of dirt or gravel. Might be oxidized.

Tastes fairly sour, some strange green fruit, mild sweetness. That odd gravel flavor unfortunately returns in the flavor.

Carbonation is pretty low, between that and the mediocre taste it's hard to drink much of this.

Not very impressed with this. Maybe the least good Jackie O's bottle I've tried other than infected ones. It's not terrible, we all finished it, but it was really not very good. I remember liking it better on tap but didn't take notes then.

5.5/10

A - Pours a dark ruby-brown but looks black in the glass. A small tan head forms, fizzes and moves to the edgess.

S - Barrel funk, ripe fruit, plums, raisins, grapes.

T - Very sour, funky wood, then some plum-ripe fruit, then finishes sour again.

D - Good carbonation with a medium body.

O - Funk and tart, plums are there but more ripe fruit, good beer.

Poured from the bottle into a tasting snifter. We opened this up at the August Baltimore BA tasting.

Appearance: Pours a clear dark amber color with a half finger of off white head that leaves a thin ring around the pour.

Smell: Quite tart. I'm getting some fruit and red berry notes. The malty sweetness is there, but the tartness wins.

Taste: Definitely getting the tartness from the smell. Some mild vinegar along with a red berry like tart note. I'm getting some dark fruit that might be from the plums.

Mouthfeel: Medium body with tingly carbonation and a dry finish.

Overall: This is a nice dark sour ale. The flavors blend together quite well. I would have it again given the chance.

Pours a rusty, cloudy dark orange brown color with a rather ample khaki colored frothy head.

The aromas threw me off guard initially. Light sweet & sour fruits and some oak. Then as I really get in there it smells like an unripe plum (after you bite into if of course) and grape skins (maybe plums skins) which is crazy, very impressed they could harness this smell in the aroma of this beer.

The flavor profile was a little less stellar. It begins with some darker caramel maltiness but the sour/semi-sweet fruitiness joins the party immediately. Light vinous notes, oak, light tannins and some earthiness than emerges more and more as it warms.

The mouthfeel is light to medium bodied with a medium amount of carbonation. Finish is dry and slightly acidic and tannic.

Overall this was another beer where the flavor profile may have been benefited from dialing down the base beer. The fruit aspects come though in the aroma more so than the flavor and I wish they were more on an equal playing field. Maybe this will develop over time but something tells me the fruit will fall out completely jut leaving generic sourness.

Poured into a snifter.

A: Pours a dark amber with a wispy thin head.
S: Lightly tart with dominant notes of un-ripened plums. Green smelling with a touch of sweetness.
T: Very mild flavors. I pick up a bit of plum and ‘green’ fruits. A bit vinous tasting and woody. Good dose of acid but nothing crazy. Wish this had a bit more punch.
M: Thinnish mouthfeel with a drying feel. The carbonation could be fuller.
O: JO’s is hit or miss and this definitely wasn’t their best offering. Not awful though.

Poured into a tulip. 2011 vintage, Bottle #93 of 204.

3.5 A: Super dark brown, nearly black color. Two fingers of creamy/frothy beighe head. Retention is about average and a small ring of lacing is left.

4.0 S: This JO's character comes out big time in this. Anyone who's had a few of their sours knows what I'm talking about. As for this one, it isn't very sour in the nose, but there is a lot of funk in the way of barn, horse, hay, wild apple, and apple orchard. I'm pretty sure I've identified what the green plum contributes and it isn't similar at all to the plums I'm used to. Oaky woodiness abounds. Complex and quite nice, but I wish it was a bit stronger.

4.5 T: Despite the nose, the taste offers a solid sour punch. Green plum adds plenty of tartness to the mix in addition to an "unripened vinousness." Again, lots of the JO's character. Big oaky woodiness, light vanilla, and light tannic astringency. Lots of apple, apple orchard, and horse funk. Hay, unripened peach, and pear to a lesser extent. Plenty of lactic acid overall without much acetic.

4.0 M: Lighter medium to medium body. Good moderate carbonation. This is good, but I'd prefer the carbonation to be a bit spritzier and the body to be creamier.

4.5 D: I'm a huge fan of JO's sours and this offers everything that I want in one. Complexity stemming from interesting ingredients, pucker without excessive pucker, and easy to drink.

Thanks Bad for this sneak peak.
Pours a nice orangish brown, a touch of head. Looks decent. Smells.... Unusual. Ive never had green plums before so im not sure if thats what I'm smelling. Not bad at all but odd. Tastes tart, sweet, funky. Lots going on. The plum is lovely. The more i drink the more i like it. Good mouthfeel. Very solid. Especially love the subtle vanilla :)
