Huge rum aroma, though a bit boozy and alcoholic.
Not a ton of depth on this one - I think it needs a few years to soften and open up. There wasn't even much stout to take in on the aroma - this is a barrel dominated brew.
The flavor is extremely rummy and boozy, but some nice stout sweetness and chocolate flavor shines through in spite of it all.
Not bad at all, though very unbalanced. With some tweaking on age and possible blending this could become something worth getting excited over. For now I'll take fresh Rum Oil over this any day of the week.

Reviewing the Rum Barrel Dark Apparition from Jackie O's Pub & Brewery.
Bottle is from batch 11. Served in a tasting glass and enjoyed on 08/25/12 at the second Chicago Craft Beer Lovers event. A big thanks to Jonathan for cracking this beer (in addition to a 1414 and Black Tuesday) before I had to leave the event.
Appearance: Pours a jet black color with a thin brown highlight strip atop the beer when held up to light. There is a thin film of khaki head off the pour. Below average lacing and slightly below average retention. It is hard to fairly judge the "appearance" of a beer from a few ounce pour in a taster glass, but this one looks like what you would expect from a Russian imperial stout. 4/5
Smell: Chocolate, desserty vanilla bean, pound cake, and sweet rum. The aroma components are each pretty prominent, but well balanced. I could smell this all day. 4.5/5
Taste: Sadly, the taste does not live up to the nose. Sweet, slightly sugary, rum hits you in the face upfront, followed by an artificial vanilla cake flavor that does not seem to blend well on the tongue with the rum. A little bit of chocolate flavor in the finish, but much less chocolate flavor than the nose led on. I was expecting much more balance from the aroma, but this at least still tastes good. 4/5
Mouthfeel: Medium-light bodied and light carbonation. This beer is way too thin for a double digit Russian imperial stout. Slick and mildly sweet mouthfeel. 2.5/5
Overall: I loved the nose, but the mouthfeel here was a huge let down that really ruined my enjoyment of this brew. I like my stouts to be heavy on the palate, but this one was too slick and light. Central Waters Bourbon Barrel Stout and Haymarket's bourbon-aged Indignant are full-bodied beers by comparison.
Recommendation: I was really glad to get a chance to try this one, and I would drink it again, but it is neither worth going out of your want to hunt down or trading the high-caliber brews it takes to acquire this limited and sought after beer. I'd recommend chasing down a much easier to acquire bottle of Peruvian Morning instead.
Pairings: Chocolate cake.
Cost: $18 for a 22 oz (bomber) bottle.

22oz bottle brought to Oscar and Caitlin's Stout Night.
A: Pours a straight black with a small tan head.
S: Solid rum and wood, some dry cocoa, and an odd vegetal, almost septic smell that I can't get away from.
T: Taste is better, with woody rum, dry roasted malts, dark chocolate. Pretty dry with some almost-tart tannins. The rum provides a clean solvent character to the beer.
M: Medium to thick-bodied with fine carbonation.
O: This was ok but the smell was off-putting. Can't say I'm a huge fan of the rum's influence here.

Pours a silky dark brown/black color with a decent inch or so of creamy medium brown head. Retention is very good and leaves a short ring of lacing as it recedes.
The aromas begin with molasses, dark bitter chocolate and dark roasted malts with light coffee. Soon though, the rum plays a huge role and begins to dominate to the point of being offensive. Fusel alcohol burns my nostrils more and more as it warms.
The tastes begin just the aromas did; roasted grains, dark chocolate, molasses, but then the rum barrel assaults the palate. Lots of boozy rum, sugar cane and lesser earthy oakiness. Boozy ethanol/alcohol resonates and dominates again.
The mouthfeel is medium to heavier bodied with moderate carbonation. Finish is heavy on the palate with the dominant burning rum flavors. Dry and roasty and boozy.
Overall this is the worst variant of Dark Apparition I have had to date. Rum adds nothing here to the base beer. Maybe the Vanilla bean and Rum combo may work better or this is too fresh but it was a miss for me. These barrel-aged Jackie-Os usually take a year or so to mélange properly so this rating may be premature but this one definitely needs some time. Look elsewhere to fill your Dark Apparition needs as of now.

I had to limit my drinking at JO's 6th Anniversary and never got around to trying this. Thus, two days later I will find out what I bought. Poured into a snifter. Bottle 109/216, 2011 vintage.
4.0 A: Black color. Two fingers of creamy medium brown head. Retention is very good given the ABV and a short ring of lacing is left behind.
4.5 S: The rum plays a huge role in the nose, but it's not just from the rum itself. It seems to pull out the base beer's aromas with it. Tons of molasses, nearly as much chocolate, and caramel a bit behind that. The coffee is bit tough to find in this variant. I don't know a whole lot about what rum is supposed to taste like, but I'm going to attribute the following to the rum and barrel. Moderate vanilla and earthy oakiness. Toasty, leathery, and boozy. The only thing I didn't like is that the booziness comes off slightly like rubbing alcohol.
4.5 T: I can see why JO's uses rum barrels for their stouts. The result is awesome whether it be Dark App or Oil. Like the nose, this is full of molasses, chocolate, and caramel. I'm still not picking up much coffee as I have in earlier batches and variants. Again the barrel adds a healthy portion of oak and vanilla. The rum adds a distinct flavor that only it can - somewhat fruity, leathery, and toasty, but in a completely non-bourbon way. The booziness is there again, but less in a rubbing alcohol way.
4.0 M: Medium to heavier medium body. This is only a touch thicker than regular Dark App (thickness is one of my main issues with regular Dark App), but it isn't thick enough to justify adjusting the score. Creamy enough for the body. Super smooth.
4.5 D: Another great Dark App variant. There's nothing really to complain about with this one. Good base beer flavors and great integration with the barrel.

22oz bottle from the December anniversary 2011 release.
A: Pours a dark black, thick and leggy. Quarter inch brown head that fades into a small foam cap.
S: Tons of thick rummy chocolate. Sweet sugar cane, molasses, brown sugar. This aroma is huge, it really stands out in this tasting. I get a little bit of alcohol but that is welcomed in this big ris.
T: Awesome rum character in this big stout. A nice sugary sweetness intertwines with the base with serious finesse. There is a boozy chocolate malt/sweet brown sugar quality.
M:Nice body on this, seems thicker than most other barrel aged versions of this lately. Carbonation is lower but it works
O: This is very well done. I think it has done well in the bottle since we had it at the release. On the sweet side of things but everyone still loved it.

Thanks to the fellow who provided this at a recent tasting. Poured from a hand-numbered bottle into a snifter. The brew appears black with a ring of brown clarity around the edges. Tan head sits atop about a finger strong and recedes leaving spotty lacework on the glass.
The smell gives way immediately to barrel aged character reminescent of coconut and fresh chocolate powder. Sweet smelling with a hint of oak and vanilla. A touch of molasses and alcohol that has a hint of dark and fruity smell like raisins.
The taste is roasty with a flavor not too dark off from bitter coffee and chocolate. Smooth barrel aging introduces flavors of coconut and vanilla that really makes this brew approachable. As it warms up, some raw oak character evolves that gets a bit harsh. The alcohol is raisony in flavor.
This is a medium bodied brew with a smooth feel and light level of carbonation. The alcohol level is felt but well integrated. I had no problem finishing my glass but this one was not as solid as the rest of the barrel aged dark app offerings I've had. It is certainly worth a try but if you had to pick only one to try, this would not be my first choice.

'11 batch, bottle 194/216
A: Pours black with a mid-sized medium brown head. Fades somewhat slowly leaving some decent streaks of lacing behind.
S: Strong boozy rum aroma. Lots of super sweet caramel. Hard to get much beyond that. It's a strong and delicious smell, don't get me wrong, just missing anything beyond the prominent features. I get a hint of chocolate once it fully warms at least.
T: Super strong rum. Loads of caramel and dark fruits - grape and cherry it seems the strongest. Perhaps some raisin. Fruit is almost tart. Might be mildly infected. Mild chalky char and some chocolate. Otherwise no real roasted malt character. Big alcohol burn in the belly.
M: Heavy, chalky.
O: Hard to say, with the slightly tart fruit flavors it might be infected. My last two Jackie O's beers were horribly infected and drainpours. I'm starting to wonder if this brewery has the worst quality control of any brewery, ever. The beer is not horrible but it's pretty much pure rum. Barely any roasted malt character at all. Disappointing to get burned once again.
