Very dark barleywine I've never seen one this dark it's almost black barely looks burnt mahogany brown maybe a touch of ruby highlights with light khaki tan head going on, fine speckled lacing.

Aroma has cocoa notes, dark fruits, toasted nuts very English malt profile going on with herbal notes of herbal hops going on.

Flavor dark cocoa, caramel malt sugars come through...herbal hops just barely balancing it out. Darker roasted malts than most barleywines I've been through. Dark fruit raisin lingering with each sip the malts are in full force.

Mouthfeel is medium to full bodied even slow bubbled carbonation, rolls off the palate pretty smooth with each sip.

Overall, I'm happy with this complex ale going on here. A really nice barleywine in the heart of Ohio's Appalachia!!!

The Brick Kiln packs a wallop! This beer is big....yet tasty. The beer poured a opaque brown with ecru head that is not leaving a lace. The scent carries a peat caramel type flare. The taste was a nice malt balance that had scotch/peat like base with subtle dark fruit on top. The mouthfeel was full in body with subtle carbonation. Overall this is a decent barley wine and I would recommend it.

375 mL bottle poured into a snifter.

Appearance - Deep brown. Light ruby flecks. Small khaki head Medium collar.

Smell - Buckets of caramel. Toffee? Brown sugar? Really, I'm just looking for synonyms for caramel here.

Taste - Sweet. Caramel. Brown sugar (for real). Nuttier as a bitterness builds into quite a bitter finish for the style and flavor profile.

Mouthfeel - Heavy. Strangely bitter. Medium low carbonation.

Overall - Tasty, but not very complex and too bitter to be exemplary.

WOW! Beer pours a hazy murky brown with thin lazed tan head that leaves beautiful lacing. Smells of dark fruits, cherries and raisins, and plums. Sweet malt and hops interplay with a boozy 10.5 percent ale. NICE. Taste is grown sugar like malts up front with cherries and raisins on the back with a nice slow alcoholic warmth. Hops, though strong on the nose are nicely in the background hidden against all the malt. A good dose of alcoholic grain is in the aftertaste. Almost herbal in quality, but one of the most pleasant beers I have tried this year.

Ever since Thomas Hardy's bit the dust I have been looking for the next favorite barley wine, and while this is very close to a few aged ones I have had it deserves to be laid down for a few years to mature. An A PLUS!

375 ml bottle, 2014 vintage. Served in a DFH snifter, the beer pours dark brown with a half inch tan head. Head retention and lacing are both good. Aroma is nice, the brew smells like caramel, brown sugar, raisins/dark fruit, dark bread and a bit of chocolate. It tastes like caramel, toffee, brown sugar, dark fruit (raisins, cherries), bready malt, and some nuttiness. Mouthfeel/body is medium/full, it's slick and syrupy with moderate carbonation. I think it's a good English Style barleywine, I should have bought some more. Definitely worth trying if you're never had it before. $5.99 a bottle.
